View Full Version : Networking woes
For one danged reason or another I can't get my desktop and my laptop to see each other through the router. Sucks especially when I want to work upstairs on a file downstairs...
I've tried sharing drive, folders, printer... I've tried to see if there is a setting in the firewalls, and quite frankly I've stopped trying.
The pisser of it is we had guests with laptops, and when they were on the network, everyone saw everyone elses shared drives including mine.
argh.
So, techies, what say you?!?
Oh, running win2k on both machines over a wireless network.

Run the networking setup wizard within Windows. I have never had a problem with it before. Make sure that when you name the network, use the same name on both machines.

I have run into that problem. I think it's my firewall but cannot get the setting right. I have not tried in a while but if I find a solution, i'll be sure to let you know :D
Are you running ZoneAlarm, or some other software based firewall on either machine? You may have to adjust your settings on the software firewall to allow network traffic between computers on your network. Look for a setting like "Trusted Zone". You can also check the logs of your router firewall to see if it looks like it is blocking data at the router.
Yeah, running firewall software on the desktop.
You know, I never even considered running the network wizard. I think my own knowledge gets me into trouble and creates more work for me. "bah, wizard, I'm A+certified, who needs a wizard, I can do this!"
Than my lack of knowledge kicks in and makes it worse!
I will try both, thanks for the info guys.
Hookeedokee, here's what we cyphered in the big bad mess that is my trainwreck of an in-house network.
In no particular order, as my wife and I were working on it at the same time. First and formost you need to search for the computer to see if its there not just click on the network places folders.
Second, I started actually reading each page in my router setup site and found under the firewall settings "MAC Address Filtering" type in the binhex thinger for the laptop found under "MAC Address" showing all the computers on my network and enabled, badabing baddda boom...
nothing.
but after we re-searched for each computer and mapped drives, it now works like a champ. I can FINALLY print from the laptop to the desktop printer!
Thanks for all the tips guys, I had but given up!
Not only did I have to click the enable box, enter the MAC address and click "add" I had to also click "apply changes"
*sigh* mark one up to the little guy!
Great job i getting it all worked out. Who knew those configuration screens might actually be trying to tell you something...
