Kids napping, the weather is beautiful, I have my laptop and the wireless card I got for my birthday out on the deck....

This is the only outdoor project I’ve gotten to this summer. Since we’ve only had four rain free days since June 1 I guess it’s not bad.

After Boo had a minor visit with the ground my wife suggested we put a rail around our back deck, it could be good way to contain him when we’re working in the yard.

The deck and all the brick was there when we bought the house three years ago. We never really cared for the deck; it always seemed awkward and unfinished. We had been planning to remove it and put down an interlock patio in its place. The rail was just what it needed to look finished. We’re so happy with the deck now we decided to keep for a while. All that brick is still going though.

William learned how to work the gate latch about two minutes after I installed it. To keep him in we have to lock the latch with a snap ring.

Looks great! Isn't it funny how quick they can figure out latches?!? Tara was through the fence gate quick as a ... well... toddler and I thought my latch was pretty tricky. NOPE

Thank You,

We did most of our landscaping in the backyard while we were still living the DINK lifestyle. I only regret not replacing the chain link fence with cedar the first year we were here. We now have a three year plan to replace all the fences in the back. Hopefully that can start next spring.

BTW
That’s not a tar paper chantey next door; my neighbour is having her house redone in stucco. What a disaster! They stripped the siding off at the beginning of May; it was too cold at the time to start the scratch coat. This rain set in at the start of June, it was to wet to start. Now the weather is beautiful but the Bow River is so laden with silt from three weeks of heavy rain that our municipal water treatment plant can’t keep up with demand. As a result the city implemented strict water restrictions this week. No water to mix cement or stucco with. Her poor house has been sitting there for two months now with only tar paper to protect it, through the worst, wettest spring Calgary’s seen in the last 80 years. I’m a little concerned now that when the work finally does begin they’ll be in such a rush to get caught up they’ll do a half assed job.

Nice work. We've been waiting for a dry weekend here to get started on our backyard projects. It seems the only nice weekends that we get are weekends where we have out of town plans. We don't get out of town THAT often.

BTW, aren't Robeez the best. Get 'em muddy as heck and just throw them in the washing machine.

Stucco in Calgary? Sounds like an odd choice for the area. We had it back in San Francisco, but it made sense in that climate (and with all the Spanish-style houses). Still, what a pain that stuff can be. We constantly had cracks that needed patching, and paint that flaked off.
