Well, once again it is my duty here to start the baseball thread for the upcoming season. The Mets have signed Jason Bay. I wonder how many at bats he will have before he goes on the DL for the Mets?

He's a Canadian. He's a stud. You have finally found a real player. The Mets are going to turn things around. Congrats. I was wondering why you never posted about that last week or two when it happened. That's a big signing for the Mets.

Just look at the cat's stats. They speak volumes. Where is your precious Silvio in all this. He likely knows everything about him off the top of his head. He's Mr. Baseball. Me, I have to get my info from the net and sportscenter. LOL.

Piss on you and your celebrations. Wish you'd have choked on a mini hotdog (not really). I did have a dream last night where I performed the Heimlich maneuver on a big girl and saved her life.

FWIW I wish he'd stayed in Pittsburgh but the ownership here is completely inept. As long as he didn't go to the Cubs I'm OK with it.

Another proud moment for Philly. What a shit hole.

Mets hold on to win in 20 innings in what just might be the most ebarrissing win in franchise history. The Cardinals pitched just about everyone but the bat boy and the Mets could barely muster another run. 6+ hour game. Caught the end of it in my hotel room in VA Beach. A wasted Saturday night of TV for FOX.

that is funny as hell, and embarassing. But the reality is, sometimes you just lose your rhythm. Sometimes the hardest throw in the world is from the 2nd baseman to the 1st baseman. I know, I played 2nd quite a bit. Such an easy throw and you tend to over think it and lose your mechanics.

FWIW the Pirates usually do okay early in the season but come July everybody on the squad will be wondering where they'll be traded to so performance usually drops off considerably. Still, I can't keep away. It's just not summer without a baseball game every day such as it is in PNC Park.

I wasn't actually aware of it, though I'd heard a few weeks ago that they wanted to send him to AAA. Lowe isn't much better -- serviceable at the back end up of the rotation, but I think in the last year of his deal, he'll be in the pen, or released, as well. Or traded to the Orioles!

Whatever happens, I do hope that Bobby Cox makes it to the playoffs in his last year. He's one of the good ones.

Anything that brings the Phils down is a good thing! The Brews won with the better pitcher today, but it might be their only win of the series. Their pitching, overall, has been horrid. Either way, of my two teams, I'm more interested in the A's. The Brews are third at best in the NLC, .500 at best too.

Jim Leyland blew yet another Tigers game by constantly switching pitchers in the late innings. Will this guy ever learn? If your pitcher walks a guy or two, you don't throw another reliever out there and then toss out yet another guy after the reliever faces one batter! Cabrerra's third HR of the game could have been a walk off win.

Kwak
05-30-2010, 01:21 AM
The Pirates were a game ahead of the Cubs 2 weeks ago and now they're behind the Brewers. Why? Well the offense is pretty lackluster with the exception of CF Andrew McCutchen and the pitching still isn't quite up to major league standards.

Starter Charlie Morton gave up 7 runs in just 2 innings on the mound and his record is 1-9. The Pirates are 8 games under .500 and 9 games behind the NL Central leading Cincinnati Reds (who got those 7 runs the other night I should add.) Instead of sending Morton down to AAA Indianapolis they put him on the DL for 15 days. Word is that he's been trying to work around a sore shoulder.

Whatever. :eusa_hand:

BTW, I'll still root for the Bucs but I'm approaching it more in the form of the anti-fan a la Randy Quaid in Major League: http://www.entertonement.com/clips/xgscbhnzlb--YOU-MAKE-MY-BUTT-STINGRandy-Quaid-Bob-Uecker-Harry-Doyle-Major-League-II-

Baseball needs to step into the next generation and use replay for what it is meant to do,get the call right!!:eusa_doh:

I had a feeling this outrage about the blown call in the perfect game would be big. Realistically, umps miss ball and strike calls every inning of just about every game that have a bigger effect on just about every game. The technology is there to get every pitch right but baseball seems content on letting each ump have "His interpretation of the strike zone". I happened to see the play live. I have never seen a first base ump get cursed out during live play like 1st basemen Angel Cabbrera did yesterday for the Tigers. The ump could not throw him out because I guess by that time he knew he blew it. Jim Leyland let him have it too after the game and to the umps credit he stood there and took it.

feedthemachine
06-03-2010, 02:10 PM
I give the ump all the credit in the world, but its just kinda another slap in the face for baseball IMO.

silviomossa
06-03-2010, 04:37 PM
I don't think it's a slap in the face at all. Every sport has human judges, so of course mistakes will be made. Hopefully this will prompt some positive changes, but I do hope that sitting in a replay tent for five minutes (NFL) will not be one of them. Either way, Selig is supposed to speak on the matter later today.

I also don't think the technology is ready to replace umps for balls/strikes, but any good system needs to be tested in the minors or at the college level for at least a full season before it is considered in the bigs.

Cubfan
06-03-2010, 05:19 PM

+1,000,000. That is another reason I dislike the NFL. What a buzz kill those things are. Make the friggin call and move on.

It's unfortunate this happened. As said, mistakes are made. But due to the circumstances, this mistake is magnified. Sh*t happens. I'd like to know what Bud Sel-idiot has to say about it.

Hockeyfan

Baseball's history is officially a total sham. Epic fail on the part of MLB. Hope Selig does the right thing. I've been busy and haven't heard if he manned up.

Mark B.
06-04-2010, 12:08 AM
Selig did not and should not have changes the call.

Hey HF, the Islanders won their first Stanley Cup on a missed off sides by Leon Stickle. It was not the overtime goal by Nystrom but the one that tied it up against Philly if I remember correctly. Does that make hockey a total sham as well?

I do not want the game slowed down anymore. As for Homer reviews would it not be easier if the league just mandated a certain amount of space between the fans and the outfield wall? 90% of the reviews have to do with possible fan interference or not seeing the ball off of an advertisement I would guess.

And while I am on my soap box about speeding the game along, I think a visit to the mound between a catcher and pitcher should count as half a visit. Ya had all winter to figure it out fellas. Play ball.

Hockeyfan
06-04-2010, 01:16 AM
Mark. An off side call is much different than a missed goal first of all. In baseball, people who get on base can score. Scoring is what matters. Same as hockey. So I equate an offside call to that of a missed ball or strike. To a degree. There is an argument to have that fixed in MLB too as the umps are inconsistent. If you have the technology, why not use it? Don't go into the whole history and grass roots of the game. That's steroids now. Another detriment to that sport. Still waiting on the hockey scandal to come out. LOL. I'll be waiting for a while I presume.

For your Islanders that was years and years and years and years and years ago. Hockey for the record does have instant replay for certain aspects of the game. Thankfully NFL does too. It does matter. Inches matter in football. Inches can mean the difference between a TD and a loss of downs. I'm glad they have it. Same for hockey. Just ask the FLYERS last night. They are sure glad. It does matter. If they didn't FIX that call the Cubfan HAWKS BIATCH would be up 3-0 in all likelyhood. Who knows for sure....

I agree that baseball is the most boring sport to watch on planet earth and anything they can do to speed it up is almost certainly a win for me. The meetings between the catcher and pitcher have gotten ridiculous. It's insane. I'm glad MLB finally fixed the home run rules to allow for replays. IT's important to get the RIGHT call. This was going to be the 20th (I think) perfect game EVER. That's EPIC for a game that has been played forever. This would have been the 2nd in the same season (within a week or so too). That's crazy. I think it's all too sad. The ump even owned it saying he F'ed up. It was the last out right? Come on. Sad. It wouldn't have changed the outcome of the game. I think he got the next batter to ground out or something. Fix it for the record books. At least then the stadium could sell the remaining 50,000 tickets (empty seats) for that game. It's a win win. LOL

Honestly I don't care. Steroids have ruined the game and the length of the games has all but made it unwatchable. I'll still cheer your Canadian Met. Funny how you hate him 1 day, then he goes 3/4 and I hear nothing. Interesting.

Cubfan

I am not a big fan of Baseball, but that call SUCKED! It should be changed. It is not like it was the first call of the game or that they lost after the call. The pitcher threw a perfect game and it should be recorded as one.

Replay has it's place in all sports. We have the technology it should be used. At least when important calls can screw things up.

Bigger plays have been missed in playoff games in MLB. Sure it sucks to lose a perfect game but to lose as playoff game in MLB due to a bad call REALLY sucks. Remember Jeff Maier?

Strasburg did have an awesome start to his mlb career. The pirates are AAA and it will get a bit tougher down the road. I am hoping the Nats burn him out. Strasburg punches out 14 and the Nats gain no ground in the division from the teams playing. BTW, Mile Pelfry was the story last night going 9, 1 run allowed, innings for the Mets to get a ND against the very good San Diego Padres.

They have a few good hitters (now), but only a few. Still, without looking it up, I doubt that anyone else struck them out 14 times this season. And, just as important, no walks.

I don't see the Nats threatening this year, even though they are said to be in on Oswalt. Still, Stras, Harper, and Zimm not only have huge ability, but give the team drawing power for FAs to make the overall team a good one. Recall that their last good FA signing, Adam Dunn, pretty much went there because no one else would take him. (The Braves wasting '09 on the remains Garrett Anderson over Dunn may have well cost them the division.) Washington will be a more attractive landing spot now, perhaps as soon as next year.

Tonight I listened to the game on the radio "old school" while washing the cars and avoiding the kids on a beautiful Friday night . How'd Strasburg do against Cleveland?

You guys are right about the Pirates *only* being AAA though. I heard their bullpen give up a loss to the Tigers for a series sweep - even though our starter pitched a solid 7+ innings. They're really sucking this year: 23-40 and it isn't even time for the fire sale at the end of July. I wish they'd pull out of the tailspin they're in but it's almost like they're being sucked into a black hole or something.

Seriously, WTF is up with the Pirates? Is it the coaching? Is it the ownership and the fact that they have the lowest payroll in MLB? Is it the lack of hitting? Is it the youth/inexperience of the team? Is it the bullpen? Is it the farm system?

I wish I had a team worthy of rooting for.

Seriously, WTF is up with the Pirates?

Bad drafting, mostly. They've done well in the last two years, but the early 2000's were awful, and since top picks take years to get there, it'll be awhile. If you look at that box score from Sunday, the top five hitters in the Pirate lineup are ones that any team would take. Add Pedro Alvarez (3B) in a few weeks, Tony Sanchez (C) next year and they'll be good. But.... the pitching is awful. They've been really bad at developing young pitchers, and still have little in the minors to show for it. They just drafted some interesting ones with upside, but they are 18 so it'll be awhile.

As for free agents, the good ones will only go to teams that show an ability to win. See the Nats soon, and the Rays. The Pirates have a chance since they are developing a good offense, but their quality lack of arms will hurt.

Cleveland's not much better than Pittsburgh these days. Neither team was much of a challenge for Strasburg. Neighbors of ours were at the game. My son's buddy said it was pretty cool watching him snap off a 100 MPH fastball, but that he was a crybaby about something with the mound and the fans were all over his case for it.

Woo hoo - Pedro Alvarez got called up last night. He starts his Big League career tonight against the White Sox. That starter they called up could've done better (hit 2 batters, walked 3 of which 2 were batted in) but the Bucs' offense kept 'em in it until late in the game.

OK, I know I haven't really contributed here other than to gripe about my home town team but I gotta wonder: what makes for a bad baseball franchise? The Pirates are a pretty lucrative team for the ownership but they don't seem to put money back into the team itself and the product they're delivering and how they present them to the fans doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The only thing I can think is that they're looking to shoot the moon and try to get the 1st round draft pick yet again. Too bad the Orioles are doing worse this year, just like the Gnats last year.

Wait'll you see what they have to spend on their #2 picks, James Tallison. They didn't go cheap when it comes to the draft this year, unlike some other past years. They also went for pitching in all but one of the first ten rounds, so they recognize their weakness. However, they are mostly HS arms, so it'll be awhile.

They are from 1999. I thought it was a very nice gesture and he is probably old enough to really take care of them. He comes down all excited and says " Dad, look I found my first Met! His name is Bobby Bonilla!" "Oh Christ, go to your room" was my reply. He made up for it with a Robin Ventura find.

I heard on ESPN radio that MLB is pushing for him to be put in the 2010 All Star game. C'mon! Some poor slob, who might have 1 chance to make the team with a possible All Star game bonus on the line, will get the boot for some unproven phenom. If he does end up going, which I am against, I hope he takes the place of a Mets player. I like my players staying home and resting a bit and not at some home run contest or having some other coach burn out another teams pitcher.

Mets beat Detroit 5-0 tonight! Perhaps those on the Strasburg for the 2010 All Star game might consider Mets pitcher A.R. Dickey instead. 6-0 and just polished off the Tigers with 8 innings pitched, 4 hits and 2 walks. BTW, Strasburg was handed his first loss against the KC Royals tonight. 1-0, welcome to life as a Washington National.

He is the single greatest pitcher in the modern era. End of story. His stats speak for themselves. I think he had 9Ks and no walks. In all of his outings he may have 4 WALKS. FOUR!!!! His opponents BA is like 0.026 when they have 2 strikes against them. If it weren't for his team sucking donkey balls he would be 4-0. EASILY. He's freaking amazing.

You are laughable when it comes to baseball. Please define your definition of "modern era" The guy gave up 9 hits in 6 innings against the KC Royals! . I agree that he is a major talent but let him go through the division two times prior to anointing him the Sandy Kofax of the new millennium OK. Just about every great long term pitcher that I can think of developed to that status after a few years of being into the league not right out of the minors.

Strasburg K's 7 but gets no support in Nationals' loss (ESPN)

Allowed only 3 runs on 6 hits. Not bad. 7Ks.

I didn't mean to bold. It came in like that in the copy/paste. Every ESPN annalist agrees with me. He will be an All-star.

Mark B.
06-29-2010, 01:18 PM
HF you are always bold!

How many runs did the Brave's pitcher (Hudson) give up on how many hits?

He very well may go to the All Star game and if so it is nothing more than a marketing ploy. Hell, let him go and wear him down some more. Just another sad "Strasmus" (that is what the Nats fans call the day Strasburg pitches now btw) day. They have just won 3 of their last 17 I believe. If he is as good as they think they might consider moving him for 3 everyday players from what I witnessed last night.

The giddiness that the Nats are going through right now is almost exactly like the giddiness you denounce the Caps fans for when celebrating Ovechkin HF.

The Nats offer 0 run support. He can have a pretty much perfect game and lose. Like that 0-1 loss. Not much he can do. We can't all pick who drafts us.

Long time Yankees P.A. announcer Bob Sheppard died at age 99 today. The Yanks can put another "Horizontal Pinstripe" on their uniforms for the rest of the season for more mojo. This season of baseball has been by far, my favorite season ever. I am not sure why I have gone from a 39year old who wants to watch games when he can, only follows the Braves kind of guy to one that is watching EVERY GAME (or has it on the radio) - Is following other NL east teams and watching some of the other divisions - I have become passionate about baseball this season.

It could be due to Twitter - I have set up an account and am following a few Braves friends and now feel more attached to the team as a result of the back and forth we share during the games.

GO BRAVEs -

That is simple. That is what most Braves fans do. But here is the really good news. The NL won the All Star game this year and that means the NL team that makes it to the World Series will be the home team. So potentially if the Braves make it to the World Series and there is a game 7 you can walk right up to the "Ted" and buy a ticket to the game that night just like Braves fans had done during the Braves "Hey Decade". You will have a harder time getting a seat on the MARTA train that night than at the game. No silly lotteries or scalpers to deal with! Oh, to be a Bravos fan!!

Eh. I just watched Andrew McCutchen lead the 10th inning rally, with Pedro Alvarez ending it with a walk-off homer, all in front of a nice crowd that stayed four full hours. Young guys Jose Tabata and Neil Walker also contributed. And this is two days after the SP that they acquired for a bucket of balls, James McDonald, pitched six shutout innings with eight Ks. Past management would've dealt these young guys for the remains of Derek Bell, all while fans complained that has-beens like Nady and Blake were traded to make room for these players.

They are putting a strong core together in the lineup, though pitching still lags. And seriously.... they are *much* better run than the Mets. They are making solid deals of late, while the #4 payroll in baseball struggles to maintain a .500 record. Ouch:icon_exclaim:

Joe Torre may come and go but Vin Scully will always be there. Dodgers announced Scully will be back for his 62nd straight season calling Dodger games next year. For those of you who have never heard a Dodgers game called locally it is quite different that ANY broadcast you have ever heard in baseball. He is a one man show and he never seems to trip up. BTW Mark, what's your take on the Pirates lately? There was apparently some big leak about the franchise's books for 2007 and 2008 that caused the ownership to release last year's figures in order to show that they are not pocketing the profits in favor in reinvesting in actual talent. If the numbers are right and if the current ownership's "thriftiness" continues (i.e. the Nuttings don't dig into their pockets and invest some of their own cash - they own several newspapers and a local ski resort - into the team in order to sign a decent free agent or two) then the Pirates will NEVER be competitive. Strangely they don't seem to want to sell - at least not to Mark Cuban or Mario Lemieux.

Still trying to decipher that. I agree with you on Millage though I don't know about his attitude. All I know is that he doesn't come across as a serious player. He was in a slump for a bit there but may have ironed out some of his issues. As for McCutcheon, I'm surprised by your remarks. He seems to be a very hard-working player with lots of talent but I'm guessing off the field he's been dicey? That kinda makes me think of ex-Steeler WR Santonio Holmes: great talent but a mouth (or twitter account) big enough for both feet.

He's not as bad as the guy they traded him for.

Not for me. They debuted him against my Pirates for the sole purpose of building the hype as far as I'm concerned. Sure, the Bucs suck and did their part by striking out 14 times but you don't beat a dead horse that way.

OK, it's a shame that he has to go through this operation and all but I really think that the coaching staff did him a big disservice by not working to alter his technique which is what I hear caused the injury in the first place. I only hope that he comes out of this a little humbled but still with a job. GMs are just too fickle these days for my tastes. To me it's almost like they trade players as easily as trading Topps bubble gum baseball cards.

I never saw him pitch live since the college WS last year. And who knows for sure what the exact cause of the injury was. I wonder if the Nationals will air the "Steven Strasburg First Game" against the Pirates on their station every other day still like they have been doing since he came up to the Majors after the news on his pitching arm?

I'm thinking he should change his last name to Hindenburg.

You have got to be kidding me. I'm sorry but that's just classless. The Pirates are the worst team in baseball so it was basically a shoe-in that he'd shut them down. Hell, they even timed his debut so that he wouldn't really have any competition. What stings to me is that the Bucs obliged so pitifully.

All I can say is that I was there today - Best story ever - Me and Laura Kate and Teddy were at the game and I taught them to put their rally caps on in the bottom of the 9th - We tied it and all of us were just going crazy - at some point during out #1 and #2 Teddy noticed that a guy sitting to out left had a Braves hat on but not in rally position - He actually went to the guy and asked him to put it on ........ seconds later McCann hits this drive for a winner (walk off) - Teddy thinks that he won the game for them!

Getting real ugly in Flushing NY. Mets look hapless. Just traded one of the few guys who seem to give a shit in Francour. I understand they might not have a place for him next year but to get a tall thin middle infielder with a cranky back?

Their best everyday player , Pagan, just went on the DL along with their big free agent Jason Bay. Reyes is back on the DL and their closer is as well along as being on "America's Most Wanted". I guess the good news with all of this recent bad news is that it really doesn't matter.

Here come all the Sept. call ups. Make room fellas!

Jason who?...........Oh yea, that guy. He currently is out on the DL due to a concussion he sustained about a month ago making a catch against the wall. He now has a built in excuse for continuing to flounder offensively through the remainder of his contract with the Mets. I would be willing to take Milledge of your hands if you want Bay back. Bay has had the "deer in the headlights" look all season at the plate.

Like my next sentence said as you know, he was gone next year anyway. I am just seeing the usual suspects on the Mets starting to slack off and there are a number of them that is all. The guy is not Willie Mays of course but seemed to really like playing (if that is what you want to call it) in NY and the fans liked him. Basically he was the least of the Mets problems. I wish him well and hope he makes an impact for the Rangers the rest of the way.

Check out this catch from last week!!

Its their own fault. How can you get young fans when the playoffs finish at midnight? How do you get new fans? I love watching playoff baseball but man its tough keeping the eyes open at times. College football best games= 3:30 (ABC and CBS). NFL 1 and 4 o'clock games, even in the playoffs.

College BCS games are after 8:00 pm est, finishing them around midnight as well.

I've not been able to stay up for all of the weekday baseball playoff games, but I have on the weekend. I'd like them to be earlier. OTOH, if they start at 6pm est then those on the west coast who work 9-5 will miss out, so I don't think there's a perfect solution. I just don't worry about it and catch what I can. Personally, I'd like to see a Giants/Rangers series, just to get some interesting new teams in the mix.

SF wins if only by atmosphere. You can't beat the Bay view. I also happened to visit it on father's day, so the kids ran the bases after the game. Good memories. Texas is nice too, but not that nice.

I did see Bennett, which was really something. I had to crash after that. An interesting game overall. Lincecum's brain freeze in the first would've been the talk if the Rangers made something of that error.

Ouch! What a beat down by the Giants. I do not think the Rangers can come back from that psychologically. The whole staff could not throw strikes. I swear Nolan Ryan would be the next guy out of the pen. "Give me the ball you gutless pukes"!! He was dying.

Even as his star has faded, he's still stayed solid against LHPs. He eeked a homer just over the wall in park that strongly favors hitters. Good for him -- a nice top-off to his career. He should make a good manager/coach someday soon.
