View Full Version : XP IP question
I have a box that I installed xp on, and at one point there was a place to enter in an IP address instead of letting it obtain from the router. (The automatic thing ain't workin')
I found it once more as I was dorking around, but didn't have the IP addy's for the "gateway" and subnet mask and all that jazz so canceled out. Now that I have that info, I can't find the dang place to enter them in again!
Seriously, this is MADDENING! I've been dorking around with it for a week trying to find the stupid place to enter the stupid numbers to get the stupid thing to recognize my stupid home stupid network! (replace "stupid" with your favorite curse)
What say you?

go to control panel>network connections>right click your connection and go to properties> click tcp-IP and click properties tab and your there :)

Thats it! I still can't get it to work though. Since the router isn't seeing it on the client list, perhaps my NIC is bad?!? The lights on in the back when the cord is connected though... hmmm.

sounds like whatever it is could be why it's not obtaining it automatically. If your going through a cable modem, set it to obtain ip auto, turn power off on everything, then turn on cable modem, let it get goin, then turn on router, then turn on computer. Is everything else on the router working okay? could plug that box directly into internet, see if you get anything without the router. also go to properites on the ethernet card and see if the "device is working properly". or throw a card in from another computer and see if it will work then. hope you get it figured out

I'm about 99% sure its in the box itself and not an issue with the router or even the cat5 cable from router to box.
Its just a "for fun" machine anyway, so I'm not sweating it yet ;)
Thanks again for the input!
More as I find time.
Whelp its not the nic or the router, its all xp's problem. I plugged the cable modem right to the card and got out... barely. It made the modem go blinketty blink too?
This is weird, seriously. Not building my confidence for putting xp on my "main" desktop machine.

are you using IE? I think there is a place in tools, connections, where it lists the obtain ip auto again, wondering if both are not set it the same might cause some problems, not sure, might check the driver for the card as well, maybe there is a better one from the manufacturer?

tt, have you got it goin with the router yet?
No not yet. I'm going to try and figure out how to get at the guts and see if I can identify the NIC with certainty. (Its a Compaq iPAQ desktop, tiny and as yet impenitrable...)
Want to hear the funniest part about all this? I'm technically an A+ Certified technician!
Goes down as "if you don't use it you lose it"
I'll let you know when I get some time, thanks for helping out!

Most cable modem/router combinations work off of DHCP meaning the IP address varies. But you can force the computer to get a new address (and confirm that the connection is working at the same time)
Open a DOS prompt (start menu-run-"cmd")
Type ipconfig/release
then type ipconfig/renew
(you can do this in XP by right clicking on the connection and selecting repair but you don't get as much information if anything goes wrong)
Or if you want to go with a static IP address, you might want to make sure your router is accepting addresses in that range.
Hope this helps somewhat.
The saga continues...
Mongo I did as you instructed after getting the latest driver for the card and running the manual iprelease/renew I get the message "unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."
Thing is, after I did the ipconfig/release it showed the same bunk ip without a default gateway. The gateway is the ip for the router right?
I'm about thisclose to throwing the thing out!
Oh, the router is... flakey? I think its a different issue from what I'm having now, but... Should I try putting the non-wireless router on?
Hmmm the router now is set to be a DHCP server.
Any other thoughts?
Since I'm updating my computer posts. I dumped xp all together because Tara's Elmo game won't work on it. Reloaded 2k, same problem. Got a different machine thinking it was the box, nope same problem. There was just no way two boxes have the same problem, regardless if they're the same make and all that, soooo it was the router. Got that figured out too.
Alls well that ends well.
thanks for the input guys!
