I'm the mother of a Stay At Home Dad and I'm delighted to see a web site like this which will be a great benefit to all the stay at home Dad's.
Congratulations to Don for doing this, and also to ALL of you father's for the wonderful work you are doing in raising your children. All of you are to be commended!

Wish my mother would understand it. I'm new to this and getting the "So...you're not going back to work?" Usually followed by "Mom, I'm working 24 hours a day now." Oh well, maybe one day.
I went back to a place I used to work at and one of the ladies there said "you better get back in the market before you lose it" ... that just warrented a blank look from me :|
Anyway...
Was your mom a SAHM?

I was afraid of the perception of family and friends. Recently we planned a trip to Ohio to visit my wife's parents and extended family. I advised her that she better set everyone straight on our situation before we get up there so there are no uncomfortable moments for me. When we arrived Her mother and father were very proud of us and bragged about me to the rest of the family. It was reassuring that her side of the family was open minded enough to see the benefits of our arrangement.
I do have trouble explaining what I do when other guys ask the quesiton "So where do you work?" I tend to give a long explanation because I want to make sure they understand that I am not just playing video games all day. I quit my old job for a better one.

I admit it, I used to be embarassed about the whole thing. It was a sign of weakness if you weren't the one out there bringing in the money. But, that is all long past and I think it is funny I ever felt weird about it.
I met up with my folks this summer and we traveled back to our home town where we grew up. It is a very small community where everybody knows each other. Anyway, my sister flew in from Florida with her kid for a week or so. She is a lawyer and has done real well for herself.
Anyway, we left the kids with my parents and my sister and I hit a local brew pub we used to go to and ran into a bunch of old friends. My sister is more talkative than I am and started chattnig to others (bragging) about clerking for a judge and then getting hired on as a big time lawyer. Then the question finally came to me and people asked what I did and I told them I had 3 kids and 1 on the way and I am a ehem... stay at home dad.
All the chicks came over to talk to me and it was just weird. I looked over and my sister was sitting by herself. I was talking with all kinds of people that were more interested in what I did than with my sister being a laywer.
I know it sounds bizarre but I find this to be the case in most instances these days.

I am relieved to hear about your bizzare situation. I have found that when I tell women about my new job they want to talk to me about it. The teacher's at my son's school, the ladies at the barber shop, all the senior ladies at church. It's like I am novelty or a new fad to explore. I would never get these informative conversations or this much attention if I was still a restaurant manager. Most guys I tell just say they are jelous in a humerous manner.
My son tells me I am the best dad in the world.
This is turning out to be the best thing my wife has ever talked me into.
