There a few times where Mets fans can get excited about the Phillies getting a free agent stud like this. One of those times is when the Yankees wanted him as much, maybe more.

Yup. As a Sox fan, no love loss or Yanks pitchers, but I always thought Pettite was a class act.
On a separate note, I've lived in FL for 7.5 years now and have yet to go to a single spring training game. Need to rectify that situation. I wonder if the 9 month old is too young... or if I should make it a boys night out instead...

30 Million a year for 10 years? Good luck to any team that signs him. This season should be interesting with his stats being micro-examined day after day to justify his free agent value. As a Cardinals fan I would say "let him walk, if he can get the money elsewhere good for him." When is enough enough? If he does stay the course and not have extension talks during the season every team would be wise to pitch around him. He will be jumping out of his cleats to make good numbers. What is scary is even with that theory he might still hit .280.

I agree he is the best positional player in the game today. Today. 10 years a a long time and that is a whole Lotta money. It is also not the Cardinals fault that some Yankee front office boot lick decided to pay A-Rod and CC Sabathia too much either. As a fan you have to have a limit. Games are expensive enough. Yanks and Boston already have 1st basemen tied up form a while. His options in other teams coming up with the money he wants are very few. It should be interesting to see how Albert handles this season. Will he tighten up under a type of pressure to produce that even he has never felt or will he turn it up a notch (not a whole lot of room for improvement in his stellar game)? The constant questions from the media and fans about his future will be exhausting.
I hope he can work a deal with the Cardinals out. He is the biggest thing there since Stan the Man Musial.

I always believed every team should have a knuckleball pitcher in the org. If my kid could throw in the 85-90 MPH range and had pro baseball athletic potential I would suggest he try to learn a knuckleball. I bet there are 100's of guys in college and in the minors that fit this bill. They are a bit short of being a pro starter but would benefit from finding that special niche.

Nice! I hit the upper 70s, but wasn't a pitcher and never trained as one really. I have pitched a bit for fun, but a bean ball was a normal outcome. LOL. I think I could have hit 80s had I warmed up prior to throwing in the speed thing. Still, 77/78 or whatever was good enough for me coming off cold.

Back to baseball (although I LOVE cars), Tee ball, how exhausting for coaches and parents. I know the kids have to start somewhere but I do not miss it. Put it this way, my kid's team won the World Series in his league last year with a line drive catch to the third baseman who then doubled off the kid at first who took two steps off first after the line drive was hit. Bang bang! That is baseball.

No, it'll be a rough year for the Mets, no question. Both of my teams, the Brewers and A's, lost their openers. I have a bit more hope for the A's, as the Brews have some bad D and a shaky pen. The Reds should be able to take the Central if they make a smart deal or two.

Personally, I'd surprised that there's actually somebody in baseball that's passionate about MLB because the Buccos have essentially been a mediocre AA team for the past 18 years.

BTW Silvio, I was in MTL during game 6 of the Mets epic win over Boston in the '86 WS. NY Ranger fan club road trip. Their pitching has been a surprise, but Karstens, Morton, and Macdonald were all brought in from traded vets. Their top pick last year is doing nicely.

It was interesting. Hopefully more data will help in the future. Maybe guys with blue eyes cant handle their booze as well as others. Every book I have read on baseball always touches upon the late night antics of players even on nights before day games. Hamilton seems to have his demons in check for now. As for Jason Bay, he might need a seeing eye dog and cane pretty soon. I was hoping during the Mets last trip into Pittsburgh they would leave him in the Pirates locker room with a bag of balls. That concussion he had last year has done him in. He should have a paper bag over his head not sun glasses on his eyes.

Ya, well they get the Cubs for two more games, so they have a chance to make it before the break. What is really something is that they are doing it with pretty much only one really good hitter and with an offense that is missing half of their opening day starters to injury. A crowd of 37k tonight, very nice.
Braves blow it to the Phils, Angels walk-off, Michaels/Costas calling their first game in decades, and a bizarro bench-clearing brawl in Boston that started while the Ortiz fly ball was still in the air. An entertaining night.
Yeah, sold out for the last 2 home stands. You can't get tickets anymore whereas last year it was just a fun thing to just take the kids to PNC Park last year, and oh there just happened to be a ball game playing in the background. Like I said: it's kind of surreal.

HE should. He's the only Pirate going to the All Star game. CF Andrew McKutcheon (sp) is a fan favorite and they and Pirates manager Clint Hurdle think he was snubbed by not being selected. Dunno what the Big Deal is; the All Star game is little more than a pageant IMO.

Robbed. Maybe. Maybe not though. It's a judgement call. I've seen the replays from all angles and it does appear that he did the ole in them, but also appears that a tag may have been made. This all happens very fast and he has to make a judgement call. If that catcher was a few inches further out from that runner's body and made the call of out, but the replay clearly showed he was safe then you'd hear the uproar the other way. It's 1 call. Happens all the time. Happens in the playoffs too where more important calls are blown. It's called human error. It always sucks when a blown call ends up being the game changer or in this case ended the game. Just think how that poor pitcher feels who pitched that perfect game...I think it was a no-hitter actually. A blown call at first cost him. The runner was clearly out.
I think baseball should implement something on key plays as does the NFL and NHL. Just need to keep the play moving. Momentum can change quickly and they can't have indiscriminate reviews on everything. Why do I care? Baseball is a snoozefest.

I agree with this,,fell asleep twice waiting for this game to end...Missed the last play live too...
The ump had his issues all around ...his "human errors" caused him to throw out a player and a manager over balls an strikes ...the little box they have now that shows the strike zone on TV should just be implemented some how and just eliminate the ump from calling balls and strikes ...just let him make safe or out calls,,that way he won't feel like he owed the home team one from his earlier "human errors" :icon_wink:

Only problem, although I could argue it, would be that tradition has an umpire doing this and if you want to hold records and keep the game sacred you need to keep it consistent or these records aren't comparable. That said, the balls, bats and parks have changed over the years, not to mention the roids, that have made records hard to compare anyways.
I do like the computer ball/strike calling box though. Much better than it used to be. Are they going to put them into every ballpark in the World though? It has to be consistent. The minors....can they afford that? I don't know.

What about the majors. Using different woods and such. The balls get altered to fly better to produce more home runs. Ball parks are made to promote the same. Whatever. The aluminum bats were just too dang hot. Kids (pitchers) were at risk of death. That was a good change. Hell I think even pitchers today are pitching differently than back in the day. Just like any sport. Hockey players use better sticks, goalies have better equipment and so on. It is what it is.

Lousy call, most damaging since the Galaragga should've-been no hitter. But I think it's tough to find the right line that allows things to keep moving. IMO, it drags basketball slightly since it's rarely used, and the NFL even more, especially on those "spot of the ball" objections that rarely produce any change. OTOH, the cyclops in tennis is used efficiently and quickly. I'm not sure what the right line is. Baseball uses it for home run calls, I think, not sure what else, if anything.

Many of these umps are lost tired old men. No way they can do in their late 50's and 60's what they did in their earlier days. It is a job for life and these guys lose their edge and certainly develop grudges. It is time to thin out the herd and bring in younger guys who are not as tainted and keep the rotation going. There is too much money at stake. I love the adult male vitamin commercial running now that has an older baseball umpire as it's pitchman ( he is not a real ump). They show a pitch come to the catcher who pulls the ball into the strike zone after catching the ball and the geezer calls it a strike! It is so real life!
Anyhow, the Mets traded Carlos Beltran to the Giants yesterday so that era is now over. I wish him well. The Metropolitans look to SWEEP a 4 game series in Cincy today. I love watching all these young guys coming up. With all the injuries to the Mets this year it is a nice surprise to be hanging around .500 in the NL East. Things are not as dire for the Mets as I thought they might be earlier.

What I love is how the talking heads are saying "things will be better once Gonzalez, Tabata, Doumit, etc. are back up from the minors/DL" when the Bucs actually got to where they were without them. News flash: it's August. The Bucs always fall apart in August. The only difference this year was that there was no big Fire Sale/salary dump. They front office is still banking on prospects and only willing to deal for second-rate talent in exchange.

LOL - it ain't football season just yet. Things are not quite all squared away with the NFL IMO.
Look at it this way: sports are a diversion and your typical armchair quarterback has no vested interest in how a team/player is doing - unless he/she is dumb enough to bet on them. The way I see it, the Pirates are having a nice change of tune and I just love the energy that Hurdle has brought to the team. I honestly don't have a favorite player but if pressed I'd go with the hometown kid Neil Walker. I'm not likely to drag my kids down to PNC Park but it was nice there for awhile to tune in the local FNC and have the Bucs' game be more than just background noise.
As for football, I love watching the Steelers but you gotta admit that a lot of it is hype. The game is slow and burns away a Sunday afternoon. I'd much rather watch the games at night. I'm actually looking more forward to hockey season this year.

Well, a rough weekend for the Mets. Lose 2 of 3 to the Bravos (of course the 2 losses were close nail biters for Mets fans) and moreover they lose their starting shortstop to a hammy injury and their third string 1st baseman to a blown out knee. The Braves completed the Fish Fry with a sweep of the Marlins. Now a much needed day and then . . . I am off to the Ted to watch them play the Cubs and to see them retire Bobby Cox's number.
Where's FTM? I figure he's somewhere feeling glad he jumped off the Pirates bandwagon at the right time.
BTW, anybody a Brewers' fan. So they swept the Bucs. I get it. They're now what 12 games over us? So why the fucking celebration like they won the fucking world series at the end? They won 2-1 mainly because (Pirates catcher) McHenry couldn't catch the 3rd called strike in the bottom of the 9th and let it run all the way to the backstop, sending the game into extra innings.

Mets appear to be on a free fall for the remainder of the season. Too many injuries for their bubble team to absorb any longer.

I'm a fan. It looked like a normal walk-off celebration to me, though they look a bit sillier when it's for a mere sac fly. Morgan is a bit of a ham, so that added to it, I suppose.
Each win is another step away from the hated Cards, another step towards a playoff berth. I can't begrudge them for that.

I saw an interview on MLB network last week that featured Braun and Fielder. Morgan did not get the memo apparently. He stood behind the two seated players and played security/bodyguard the whole time. He is the ring leader of the team but between stuff like this, on field antics and head hunting catchers his days just might be numbered.

Looking back I suppose you're right. If the Pirates had pulled victory from the jaws of defeat like that (instead of the other way around) I could see them doing that.
As for Morgan, he's turning into a bit of a journeyman. He seems to like it in MIL but anything's better than being with the bucs and the gnats I suppose.

Last night was perhaps the most epic night in the Modern Era in baseball. All my teams ran the table happy to say. I wonder if the Bosox were watching the 7 run come back by the Rays against the Yanks in the clubhouse during their rain delay? GULP! Thank you Atlanta and Boston for taking the Mets off the snide as having the worst collapse in September in MLB history.
Congrats to Jose Reyes for winning the NL batting title (no matter how you did it). Hope to have you back next season and beyond if the terms are right.

Reyes is a bitch. That was sad.
It was THE best night in baseball EVER. Without question. I hate baseball for the most part and judging by the activity in here, it's likely shared by most everyone. Still, last night watching the Rays come back and that no name guy pinch hitting with a 2-2 count and 2 out in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game was insane. I woke my wife when it happened. LOL. Guy was hitting like .122 or something for the season. LOL.
Amazing. Suck it Sox fans.

Looks like TBS has clout on the Tigers vs Yankees series in my market. Too bad Fox Sports doesn't get to cover with the usual guys; takes a lot out of the game when you get a couple of schmucks who know nothing about the teams they are watching.

There are a lot of games coming up and there is only so much Joe Buck and Tim Mcarver I can take. Hopefully Gary Thorne will be around. I can't stand Joe Morgan (loved him as a player) or his bloated partner the most.

The other side of the coin was that Braun himself said before his last game that by Reyes leaving early left him a chance to possibly catch and overtake him in the bating title. He went on to spit the bit. He was 0-4 last time I checked that game. Could not handle the pressure. :icon_lol:

Yeah. Kinda like the Redsocks. What makes it better is my neighborhood is littered with Boston massholes. Two doors down, three doors down, and so on. Wish I had a Rays banner. I've liked the Rays for a long time. I like seeing a team compete with a payroll the size of a single Yankee player. Refreshing.

I used to be busy outside until October and would watch the LCSs and World Series. I'm thinking I'll try that this year. Not rooting for anyone in particular.

I almost drove off the road yesterday when listening to the Colin Cowherd show he screamed "The Red Sox were beaten out of a playoff spot by a team that pays it's team in sun block and wheat thins."

Francona is out in Bean Town. Wow. Not sure how much he had to do with that 7.00+ ERA in the last month. I must say that about 3 weeks ago I was watching a Red Sox game on national TV and former Sox player Kevin Millar was doing the "man in the crowd" job and sitting right next to the Sox dugout. During some of the game when Millar was talking on camera he said that Francona was pelting him with sunflower seeds. Might be a microcosm of the teams focus and view of the situation.

Nice looooong rain delay in the Bronx. Have fun driving home win or lose Skanky fans.
Update! They are done! What a mess. Possible double header Sat. Should be fun parking. What a shame to all those Yankee fans who dropped 1-2 c-notes only to be sent packing after the first. Come back tomorrow for more. Bring your wallet.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed watching the stunned reactions of the Yankees fans. The Tigers came a long way this year and worked hard to get there.

For full disclosure I am a Red Sox fan (or Red Sucks this year), so I always love it when the Yanks go down, but I do have to say, I like that some of the smaller market (read, lower payrolls) teams are faring well. I was rooting for the Rays simply b/c of location, but a Tigers-Rangers series could be good. Verlander is phenomenal.

Hey, remember the sport of baseball?
I am starting to think it is a good thing Detroit (the team I was rooting for) is out of the WS. 47* maybe at game time in St. Louis with decent winds. Tough conditions for baseball.

Never forgot, been watching the playoffs all along. I'll watch some of the WS, but will care very little this year, for a change. I usually prefer the NL but have no affection for the Cards. Texas is well-run and has never won it, so perhaps they are the one to root for. A bit of a shrug this year. Maybe a good Game 7 will make it worthwhile.

Should be interesting. I hope he stays with St. Louis. I am not sure he would like dealing with the Chicago media and fans. It is good when it is good but it is really bad when it is bad. He did not talk to the media after game 2. That ain't gonna fly in the windy city. I would guess the St. Louis media is a bit more reserved.

I'm not a big baseball fan, but man that game tonight was fun to watch. How do you pull back from one strike away from losing it all, twice, and pull out a win? Good stuff!

Guess who fell asleep after they tied it up in the 9th? Aw crap! Unreal. I can not see how the Cardinals lose now. Texas has to be feeling it today. Is it just a matter of time before Nolan Ryan has a heart attack in the box seats. He tries to hold it in but his eyes give him away. His wife was rubbing his back in game 5. Geez.

I watched while playing BF. It was a great game. Not many ball games are great or enjoyable on any level to watch. Even for a big sports fan. This one was though. I got off BF at 11pm and watched until 12:30. Then missed the win in the last inning. I just didn't know when it would end. Rangers kept going up only to have those punk assed Cards get back in it.
Will be enjoyable watching in between lives tonight.

Found out that I missed seeing Freese play A ball in Fort Wayne in 2006.
What a game. It really did look like the Rangers had it in the bag. I was mostly glad that the win didn't come from sloppy play that plagued the early innings.
Tonight should be fun (and my wife will be happy to get sleep tomorrow night.)
