I'm a WAHD and was wondering how many dads in the forums work from home.

If so, what do you do? I'm a web designer and Internet marketing consultant.

How many kids do you have? I have twin 3 1/2-year-old boys.

What are your secrets to success? Loving wife and nursery school!!!

I work from home. My son is 18 months.

I run a toys and collectibles business online. The business has grown steadily and we are looking into establishing a physical storfront when the little guy starts school in 2-3 years.

It has been difficult at times but being able to spend this much time makes it all worth while!

I also work at home as a in-house webmaster and internet marketer for a toner supply store and printer hardware. I also architected the back end order processor system for them before I started working from home so they could lower costs by automating 99% of the process.

Though I have been looking for another product line to work on my own independtly but it is always hard to find good suppliers.

At the moment I have a 3 year old that is running around, and we are expecting a second one in Jan.

Since most of my work is project based I am able to schedule time to do things with Elizabeth around doing work. And when I am busy she is pretty good about being on her own in her room and letting me take care of business ;)

I do some web design and alot of internet type marketing of retailers goods and services. I act as a middle man, it's called affiliate marketing but it's way too hard to break into unless you have a great source of unique content, I started over 7 years ago and took 4 years before I started making real money. Not doing so good right now. Might explore drop shipping, opening my own online store front.

I also work from home. I am Director of Quality Control for a web based Mortgage Software Co. I Test and Test and Retest and Proof Read and Proof Read and Proof read Again....

Since I work on proofing and testing I can do it when ever. Any deadline is no problem because the main office is in California and I am in Illinois. 2 hours makes all the differance.

I have two boys 5 Year old and a 1 Year old with Baby Due in May.

I tend to do the bulk of my work in the evenings after the 1 year old is in bed and when he naps or is playing with the 5 year old. I have a LARGE family room of my office so I can be right there without actually being right there. Child Proofed and Baby Gated....

i run a small consulting business on the side. Haven't done much this year at all but It's there to power up when I would like to. Since Jim turned one he's been a bit more demanding so I haven't had the time to go out an drum up buisness.

And you think once he turns 2 it'll be all down hill right?!?

I have 3-year-old twin boys and I can vouch that it doesn't go down hill at 2 (or 3), it's just different! My boys are great, and they go to nursery school 3 half-days a week, which is my biggest block of time to get things done. Then, I fit in work wherever else I can.

Of course, the flip side is that being a WAHD offers great flexibility for doing things with the family, like playing hooky from work and taking the boys to the park.

I am a theatre director and writer and a brand new SAHD with a 3 month old and I'm still, actually, trying to figure out how to make it all work!! I have two shows coming up; one in December and one in April, and, truth be told, I'm a little anxious becasue a lot of my preparation time has been usurped, of course, by our little guy . . .

(Funny how I had this pre-labor, green-eared romantic vision of my son and I co-existing happily; he in his little chair on the foor in my study, quietly and happily watching me work . . . Reality, of course, has since reared it's laughing head . . .)

I've also been writing a play and a few poems that have been put on hold, and the longer they stay dormant, the harder it becomes to actually finish them . . .

It's a new adventure, a new life, fer sure!

Congratz on the little one Matt.

As for working at home, I dont have that luxury. But I am a teacher of a music program for infants from 6 months to 5 years. I recently started it as it works around my girlfriends schedule.

I also debating starting my own business selling spice mixes and all as I enjoy cooking and come up with new ideas all the time. I just wouldn't know where to start or get the client base. =(

Sounds like a great idea. Networking with local businesses and other stay at home parents would probably be a great way to test the waters on your idea. You might try creating some 'samples' and offering them to the people in your 'network' to see what they think. If there's a positive reaction, you can probably leverage your network to help get the word out and begin building your distribution. It would most certainly be grass roots at first, but could build from there.

I shall have to consider that. I tried a new recipe today actually and came out pretty good. Made chicken and 4 cheese flautas. Made the tortillas from scratch and all. Not bad if I say so myself. lol

justinpowell
10-07-2005, 03:32 PM
Mmmm...flautas!

My wife and I love Mexican food - we even got engaged in a Mexican restaurant in NJ. The choices for good Mexican and Spanish food are kind of slim in Suffolk County, so you'll have to keep me posted on how your venture works out!

Bollux
10-08-2005, 03:10 AM
They were definitely good. Took a while to roll out the tortillas and all but worth it to me. I love mexican/baja food so I am always trying to make some new types of mexican. Spicy food is my friend. =) If there is a warnign label on the hot sauce then it has to be good.

I also managed to do some japanese like benihanas, was shocked when it turned out exactly like the food there. Great food for 1/3 the price.

As for mexican out in suffolk yeah it is kinda slim pickings. You can "chain restaurant" it at like on the border or cozymels, but in my opinion some of the little self owned shops make better food. There used to be a good place in like centereach but its been years since I have been in that area.

My girlfriend has already begun the "world domination" plans for me to run my own business both with the spice sales and I am also a "Music Together" teacher so she has grand ideas of me opening my own center and making cash that way. Anything to make life easier.

justinpowell
10-09-2005, 04:37 PM
I live about 10 minutes from Centereach. You don't by any chance remember the name of the restaurant, do you?

Bollux
10-10-2005, 02:32 AM
I wish i did, I remember it was in a strip mall in a corner location. It really has been years since I have been there. I lived with a guy who was from centereach in college and he showed me the place once. So now really the only good baja/mex food I get is whatever I make.

Went to a bday party for a little girl who was in my sons "mommy and me" class yesterday and apparently her entire immediate family knew me as "the guy who makes really good food". Apparently people can't remember much about me but my cooking. lol

Yeah seems it. My gf always tells me she brags about my cooking and then turns around and tells me she invited a ton of ppl over for a mary kay party and I end up being the caterer. Nothing like playing kitchen slave for like 4 hours. She turned to me one day and during a dispute said that I enjoy cooking and I am good at it. My reply was yeah sure I love spending 4 hours in a kitchen at 120 degrees. She just doesn't understand, when she tries to cook something and it goes somewhat wrong she ends up destroying something. Have lost plates bowls and an oxo mixing bowl to her fustrations. =/

There are a few places like that around here. There is even one that is in an industrial complex that has all the BIG inflatable JUMPHOUSE things. My only question is how much $$$$ would INSURANCE BE?

I work at home as well, composer/sound designer. The main challenge has been keeping my daughter off the drums while recording! My son loves the keyboards so it usually turns into a 30 minute jam session & then they get it out of their systems.

I took the kids to one of those inflated jumping thing, they had a blast, parent were encouraged to jump with them, so we all had a great time. Nice activity when the weather is cold.

We had to sign "jump at your own risk" waivers though, so maybe the insurance isn't too bad. They have 0-5 time in the mornings so it's pretty mellow.

I was a SAHD while my wife was a school teacher. We had a 3 and a 1 year old and then a newborn. I did that for three years until I made a tragic error ( remind me to tell you the "Hair Cutting" story) and then I had to get a real job. <grin> The line of work I went into was beyond time intensive. It was not conducive to life as we know it. I stayed in the field but moved to a less demanding region where things are far more "normal". My wife began selling candles, but more importantly, she began using the internet to find other others that were looking for a genuine opportunity. In the last year she has developed a team across the US and into Canada - all from home, and all throught the computer. It took a while to convince me but I've seen the light and, more importantly, the power of the Internet, and I've started working with her. Our goal is to ultimately end up as SAHP's = Stay At Home Parents. But that's probably a year or so away!

Hi All,

I'm a work from home dad too. I'm a single dad too... for about a year now. My son is 4. Been working from home doing design/programming/marketing (www.visualpowertools.com) for about 4 years. The wife (now ex) just wasn't up to being a parent. Some just ain't cut out for it.

Life is about juggling and not enough sleep. I'm not a big beleiver in daycare but he does go to school for three hours a day.

On days when I keep all the balls in the air it's glorious. The other days you just do your best.

sebonllib,

Welcome to the Forum! :D We're really glad you're here. I enjoyed your last sentence on your post so I quoted it. I also got a chance to check out your website a bit. I'll go back when I have more time. I really liked the video introduction, both the black and white and the tall, good-looking narrator dude. Is that YOU by any chance? <grin>

If you haven't already done so (I noticed this was your first post :) ) you may want to go to the "New To Site - Just Saying Hello" forum and let folks know you're here. I try to check that one periodically to see who's showing up. You should be greeted by a lot more of the guys there! All the Best! I look forward to hearing more from you.

I am a freelance writer and web designer. I mostly do technical and business writing along with web site design. I do other types of writing work too, but that covers the bulk of it. I'm probably switching some over to editing work because it requires less thought and is more easily squeezed into the small spaces in the day.

My son is almost five months old and I've maybe billed 20 hours since he was born. That tells you about how much I've figured out about being the WAHD. Starting next month my neighbor will likely being keeping him two or three mornings a week so I can get some work done. Doing without my old income has been a bit rough.

I'm hoping to get up to half-time. That's probably going to be my limit. I was originally planning to work in the evenings when my wife got home but I've been so exhausted that it's been nearly impossible. Weekends have been crammed with just trying to catch up with the basics like getting groceries. He's been getting up at 5AM and requiring lots of help with napping (i.e. sleeping on my shoulder) so work isn't really an option and sleep during the day has been rare. At 17 pounds already, I am certainly toning my muscles from carrying him around. :)

I sound like I'm griping. Yeech. My wife and son are the two best things that have ever happened to me. I'm just low on sleep these days.

Glad to have found a support network!

I try to work from home. Hard to do with 2 monsters running around and when I get on the phone they want to talk to the person even though they dont know them. I make a lot of apologies to callers. They seem to scream the loudest when I get a call.

What I do from home.

I am a jerky distributor. I just got started in this one. I sell pet food, telephone services and do some affiliate stuff with several different companies. I use to be in Excel Telecom. Made some good money their until they filed bankruptcy. Had to start all over.

Rich? Nope! Make any money now? Not hardly. Only thing I have made any money at is the jerky. It's not jumping off the shelf but it does sell online and in person. I don't carry any inventory. I just order what I sell. I get a monthly check also from the telephone service. I at least have some residual their. But so far nothing is a big suc-cess they only suc-my-money out or I should say her money out of her wallet.

Some advice from experience.

I don't want to discourage working a small business from home but be really careful. Do they ever work? Yes they can. I have a friend who sells fish oil online and never advertises. He says a bad month is 2 grand or less. He rarely makes 2 grand or less a month. How did he do it? High search rankings!

A lot of these companies that you work selling something, they just make money from their distributors. The way you can tell the difference is the price of their product. If it is way over the price you would pay, means they have to get a lot for their product to pay out commissions. That dog food I sell is way over priced. It is very healthy for your pets but not on your wallet. You really have to be a good BSer to get customers. It works but you either have to sell a lot of product or sell at least $150 dollars worth and get like 6 people under you who are doing the same. Also the way you can tell the difference in a good or bad one is if they push recruiting and not the products, usually means nobody is buying the product except the distributors. Makes it almost a pyramid that way. Look for companies where you can make just as much money selling product as you can recruiting.

I probably stepped on some toes here and I apologize in advance. I tend to stir the post everywhere I go but I speak from the heart.

Sorry to go on and on, just trying to offer some help for the curious.

Isn't there a Mendham Pub on the other side of town? I remember seeing something like that in a shopping center we drove past.

As for the move, we were hoping to close next week but it looks like it will get bumped a week. Fortunately, my wife's company is paying for movers as part of the relo so we won't have to worry about packing anything. So we're pretty much in a holding pattern for a week or two.

We're currently out in Suffolk County on the North Shore of the Island. Things were pretty laid back where we're at and I liked most of the people I met in town. I'm sure that things out in the Hamptons and by you in Nassau things could be different. I was amazed at the sheer number of Hummers and Suburbans clogging the roads out here -- no wonder gas prices are so high in NY!

PA is the most likely target since her family lives there. It just seems a much nicer area to live and survive. Cost of living is a little less so money can go a bit further. Though gas prices there are just as insane as they are here. I saw a station in NJ yesterday selling for 2.56 a gallon and I was shocked they stayed so low while we are at like 2.90 for regular.

I just officially quit my job! The whole saga went something like this:

wife stayed home with son for first 3 months, then she went back to work. Then my employer allowed me to work a part time schedule (basically 24 hours a week) thru a combination of using my vacation time and FMLA time. The agreement was that I could work those 24 hours via weekend, nights, and/or at home. But also that I would go downtown to the office at least 1 day of the week for face-time,assignments, etc.. The first couple months went according to plan but the last couple months sort of slid by without me doing much work and not much communications. So my boss's boss more-less pulled the plug, and basically said "come back to work full time or move on". All the while I've really lost interest in my job (and career path) anyway, and now the wife and I feel the time is right to call it quits. Now I plan on staying home with the kid thru at least the summer and take some time to figure out what I want to do with myself. My wife is super supportive of the whole thing and in fact it's me who is in the panic about what am I going to do with myself!!?!?!? By quitting this job I'll basically have to start over in another career field since what I did was so specialized. This is a scary time for me!

I work for a translation company doing mostly Desktop Publishing work (prepping files for translation and then making everything fit after translation). My wife re-arranged her schedule so she works four 10 hour days and has Friday off. I go into the office on Fridays to fix computers, install software, move furniture sometimes.

The rest of the time I generally work when the little guy is asleep since he loves to play with the buttons on the laptop and sdngadsfpongv is not a word in any language (although it looks a bit Scandinavian- maybe Norwegian??)

I have always been a bit of a night owl/insomniac so this schedule works although the days when I'm up until 4 working on a file and then SOMEONE is up and looking for breakfast around 8...

My wife and I share the chores and the cooking and she gets some baby time when she gets home from work and she gets him up in the morning and gives him his first bottle.

I am so very lucky that my job lets me work the schedule I have. It's saving us a ton of money in Gas and lunch (because even if you plan to brown bag it, how many days are you running late and just grab something in town?) and STRESS from not spending the 2-3 hours a day traveling back and forth. And then there's the money saved by not needing Daycare.

And the joy from getting to watch my son grow up and explore his world.

I don't actually work from home really, but I help my wife. She works with a company called AmeriPlan....She has been into network marketing for several years but I just dont get into all that stuff.

She does very well with it and over the last 6 years has bounced from company to company until the last year. She joined AmeriPlan and has done very well with it and it supports our family so I can not complain.

I try to help her out, but she talks on the phone alot, and I just can not get into talk on the phone mode.

She makes me listen to all these freakin calls all the time and that drives me nuts. I listen to just shut her up.

She worked with a company called Melaleuca (not sure if I am spelling that right or not), and worked it really hard for 2 years but it was to much work to keep up with what ever one was doing and NOT doing. So, she got tired of babysitting and tired of buying all those products and left.

I do make some money from my dogs, but other than that I guess you could say I do not actually work.

She uses the internet alot for prospecting so we are always fighting over the computer. HA I think I am going to go buy my own so I can use it when I want too.

The wife will also be working from home shortly too. We just moved so we have some extra cash stashed so we are giving it a shot. I am established in my business but she is pretty new starting out... lets just see if we can try not to kill each other ;)

Black Horse -- that's what I meant. Nice place. We go there once ever week or two. (Just get their early as it gets packed.)

How's the move going?

We moved into the new house last week and made it to the Black Horse Pub last night to celebrate! Hope to catch you there.

Welcome to NJ! :D

We've got a little Daddy trip to Great Adventure planned for the 15th of May, if you might be interested. Just thought I'd toss out an invite. Rumor has it that Jax Dad may consider attending, so maybe you can carpool?!

That's the rumor. This is the busy season for my business, so I have to see what's going on in the next week. (Good news is, orders are way up. Bad news, whew, I'm tired.)

Justin, welcome! We'll see you there. We'll be the family with the kid... ah, well, we'll wave.

Andy, my wife and I both work from home. The key is offices that are out of earshot from each other. Distance makes it all easier!

Hey, thanks! It sounds great, but I'll have to let you know on that one. Now that we're in the new house, my punch list of chores is a mile long!

On the up side we've eaten at the Black Horse Pub twice already since we've been in the new locale. Jax Dad - we'll have to plan a meetup!

I have a Wood Flooring Business. Calling it a small business would be a gross overstatement. But because everything's paid for(equipment), everything I make after expenses( wood, nails, sandpaper, finish, etc......)
is Mine.... The hardest part is getting jobs-- customers don't want to hear you can't start sanding their floor on Saturday because your daughter has a soccer game ..............

Whatever It Takes.

Jim, I wonder if you could turn that into a selling point -- Floors by Dad. Floors by a guy who knows exactly what your floors will go through.

Wasn't at the Pub on Sunday, but was there Friday night with the inlaws for Cinco de Mayo! On Sunday we tried Redwoods over in Chester -- it was pretty good!

Hello,

I'm new to the group here and came across this thread.

I do internet marketing of several different products and services. It has been slow getting started. Anyone who works on the internet knows how difficult it is to find quality and low cost ways to advertise.

I recently found a marketing company that is doing fantastic for me. I pay them only if they perform. It's a great situation. This year I expect to make triple what I made before becoming a stay at home dad.

I hope to meet many of you very soon,

Paul....

I have been working from home since 2000. At the time I started a decent sized computer consulting company with a decent amount of clients and it brought in some cash. In 2003 my biggest client asked me to join their staff and work for them. I did it was nice till they laid me off so they can hire the human resource directors husband. I tryed getting back on my feet with the consulting, but that aint for me any more.

I prefer to stay home. My kids are in school, though my daughter will be home for the summer. My biggest problem is that I hate collecting money from people and I would rather be there for my kids.

I have looked into so many work at home companies, and I think the majority of them are just scams.

I edit and write for an online financial company, along with doing some spreadsheet design for a company I worked for when I lived in Hawaii.

Gotta say that life was easier before the boy turned 18 months. He'd nap for two hours twice a day in those days. Now he's four and naps are pretty much history, along with the ease of working through the day. But I still get a couple of hours in a day while he's awake, and I can't ask for much more. He's a fine friend to give me that much time, I guess.

Can I put my blog link in here? http://sahwahd.blogspot.com

If that's not allowed, kick me for not reading the rules. :-)

URL's to blogs are ok, unless it's blatant spam, glad you registered or it would have been deleted

I work my photography business from home when the older kids are in school. I tend to focus on stock photography, however I do the occasional portraiture (not the "adult" type photography; but just your standard business or family portraiture.

I do part-time web/graphic design from home. It was full-time, but I intentionally cut back on accepting clients when my wife returned to work and I took on the primary caregiver role.

So far it's working out well, though when I have those times I need to stay up late working and then get up early the next day to take care of my son who's woken up earlier than usual, it takes a lot out of me. Suddenly his nap time becomes my nap time too, rather than time to get some work done, and it can start a bit of a vicious cycle! It probably doesn't help that I'm already something of a night-owl.
