View Full Version : cracked laptop casing and jammed outlet
Long story short, the new laptop got tossed and landed on the power supply fitting, breaking it loose so that it's physically impossible to plug it in to recharge the battery. We got it at Best Buy with no extra warranty but wife tried to open up the case to fix it herself tonight. Are we screwed?

Didn't it come with a warranty itself without the extended one? Are you not still inside of that? Bring it in and try. Can't hurt.
My sister brought her MAC in outside of warranty by about 4 months and they covered her completely. Likely about $500 worth. Replaced the battery, fixed a slight slight cracked case, internal stuff, backed up her data and all sorts of fixes. All free.
Good luck

Opening it yourself might be an issue. Induced damage is not always covered. Unless you buy it at Costco or some place like it. You could drag that thing in behind you car for the 1st 90 days and they would take it back. Given issues in your household you might consider buying there in the future if possible. Good luck. Will it work with the AC plug attached?

Usually if you open them that will void the warranty that it may have. What brand/model is it. All depending I may be able to get my hands on the piece you need.
We just took the screws out. We're too dumb to figure out how to crack open the case. They're back in now, though a few are stripped. :dumb:
Actually, it was all HER idea. :icon_wink:
Anyway, to answer your question, Mark, the casing around the socket where the power supply's plug fits into has been broken and the socket got pushed inside and can't be reached so it won't connect.
So I'm off to BB to see how much it's gonna cost. If it runs more than a couple hundred $$$ wife will be pissed but I can't be blamed for this so I wash my hands of it. In the meantime we're using the old Dell laptop that has a bad keyboard (using an external) and a non-charging power supply (we're using her work PC's power supply which is also a Dell and charges the battery just fine.)
Just wanted to say that we had to send it back to Toshiba and yes we had to pay to have it repaired because it's damaged. We sent it out on Saturday though and they just got it.
Got the Toshita back from the repair facility today but I haven't fired it up. I'm kinda liking the old Dell all over again. Does anybody else find XP to be more stable than Windoze 7 (which seems to me to be a wonky POS) or is it just me?
I gotta get a new keyboard for this old laptop though. Using an external on a notebook is just a drag.
EDIT: BTW, I thought there was supposed to be a bill on this? I didn't see anything included in the package. ???

I would think if they wanted payment for repair they would have had you pay up before returning it. Good for you!

Maybe they did. I'll have to check the CC bill. It'd have been nice if they'd put a receipt in the box instead of a checklist of what items were replaced.
OK, this one is going to go over to the F##K! thread: the notebook hasn't been back 2 days and my autistic/ADHD 7yo and defiant 4yo seemingly conspired to distract me and attempt to destroy it. While I was trying to get the little guy on the potty the big guy doubled back and chucked the laptop off the couch where I'd set it and it crashed against the leg of a chair, cracking the display.

That truly sucks.
I think someone is jealous of your laptop.
