I guess HS ball is a big thing here. The first game of the season is across the creek from the house between the two city schools. It's big enough to be on ESPNU tonight. If we had a TV on the first floor, we could probably open the windows, pop some corn and feel like we're really there.
Maybe we'll partake sometime this season. There's a campaign to encourage attendance in an effort to raise money for the schools.
I grew up in a football crazy part of Ohio, but pretty much the whole state is. Not going to the home games was unthinkable.
What's the high school football in your area like?

So this is the reason this is being televised.
Gunner Kiel
http://rise.espn.go.com/~/media/F1AB6FC04FFC4C87853736C31257B6D1.ashx?w=583&h=389 (http://rise.espn.go.com/football/articles/2011/08/15-ESPNHS-magazine-Gunner-Kiel.aspx?pursuit=Football)
And he's signed with INDIANA.

Football is really big here, the high school built a nice new field and grandstands a couple of years ago. It's pretty nice.
Lacrosse is pretty huge as well.

With a name like GUNNER Keil a QB he was born to be...
Not really that big out here...

What's the high school football in your area like?
Not as dominant since I graduated. :eusa_whistle: We have some excellent football in this area. Not sure if Darth considers himself "this area" or not. :icon_lol: Wheaton/Warrenville South are always up there, as is one of the Napervilles usually. There are some national-level powerhouse football programs at several private schools around here. Providence, St. Rita, Mt. Carmel. Frank Lenti of Mt. Carmel is considered one of the best and winningest coaches ever. He's married to my dad's cousin, cool guy.
As for your boy Gunnar, I've always wanted to see how those "big fish in a little pond" guys would do in a bigger market. It sort of levels the playing field when there is more competition. The fact that he chose to play football at Indiana over MI, ND, OK, and AL tells me he's still dodging his way into the starting job. And FWIW, the name Gunnar Kiel is no "Major Applewhite" or "Colt McCoy"! lol.

I agree CF. Not a big school. Big fish in small ponds don't fair so well when they are surrounded by other fish. Cool name though.

That's messed up. It reminds me of the quote about T. Pryor from his agent: "Terrelle is going to the NFL because the NCAA mandated that he feed their families, but he could not feed his own."
And now they are sticking teenagers players on TV to make money for their schools? Pitiful.

I was thinking the same thing. Where do the Athletic Supporters take the HS athletes? Most of the kids I saw on TV looked to be about 12. Freshman RB 5'8" 185 pounds. No way he could even buy cigarettes at the grocery store let alone get into a strip club.
North beat East in a pretty close game. Gunner threw an interception with 3 minutes left and got a TD with just less than a minute to make it 35-31. Failed to complete the 2 point conversion. Then they lost the onside kick even though three East players touched it on the ground.
I'll tell you, though, he throws bullets. In this case, at least, I think he'll learn or has learned a lot about pressure. They're in class 4A and play 3 teams in their sectional this season. All the rest are bigger schools. The offensive line he is behind sucks. He lines up way back and the center got it to his hands about 1 in 4 times. So, he's under a lot of pressure and does great. Still I'm pretty sure they'll have a losing record. The defense is probably 4" shorter than the offense and didn't let North run for less than 5 yards. It looks like everyone wants to play on the offense and the 2nd team is the D. Lots of high scoring games in the future.
The boys cried when my wife turned the game on last night so she only saw a minute or two of the coverage and I turned it on after mowing the yard with the fourth quarter just beginning.

nope. we havent hit the tough part of the conference yet. out of the last i dont know 6 state champs 5 have come from this conference possibly? I know last year was the first year in probably 9 or 10 years that someone from the conference has not at least gone to the game. we lost in semi state. another game going right now. 35-0 with 293 yards of offense to 22 halfway though the 3rd qtr.

saw this story and didn't know where to put it.....
Anyway, it looks like they re-implemented the "Crazy Legs" Cubfan Rule (http://rivals.yahoo.com/highschool/blog/prep_rally/post/Youth-league-institutes-TD-limit-to-hold-back-11?urn=highschool-wp6562). This rule was created in 1987 during my 8th grade year to prevent blow-outs and embarrassment of the opposition.
This kid is good, but not as good as I was.

Since you guys are so interested in Indiana Football...
Here's rmchone's team. (http://indianahsfootball.homestead.com/files/logs27.htm)
Looks like they got revenge on Warren Central Friday night and are heading further into the tournament.
Here's the high school across the creek from us. (http://indianahsfootball.homestead.com/files/logs45.htm)
Columbus East's only loss was to the cross-town rival on ESPN. But they're in a division lower after being in the same division for a few ears.
Gunner is "reconsidering" his commitment to Indiana University. Could it have anything to do with his brother beginning to start as QB at IU this year? He went to the USC/ND game a couple weeks ago and didn't play that week. So it looks like The Irish are getting a QB next year.

rmchone's team won their championship 42-0.
The team that beat Gunner Kiel beat their opponent 42-7
And OSU gets Urban Meyer out of retirement. Where I grew up, The Buckeyes were everyone's high school team.

4 state titles and ESPN's Girls Soccer National Champions. This year we have Cheerleading, Girls Cross Country Girls Soccer and Football. So ya like I said we dominate. Girls swimming and diving has won 25 straight years...26 of 27 total. We have won like 105 state titles and the second on the list is 57 or something. So ya.

I had friends that played for the Carmel Pups. Quite the little organization.
A few years back I got into high school football to watch a coworker's kid play. Jake Locker. He was a man among boys. Won the state championship and could have gone anywhere (the University of Michigan baseball coach told the U of M football coach "If you're not going to offer him a scholarship, I am") and he chose to go to U Washington to be close to family.
Hope he does well in Nashville.
The Locker family is great family. He is a super nice kid and his dad is very humble. I hope he does well.
My friend's kid in junior high got into some trouble and started hanging with the wrong kids. One day his wife answerred a knock at the door in the middle of summer and it was Jake Locker and two other varsity players. Jake intrduced himself and said "Mrs Robinson, we hear your son Luke is not going to play for the junior high this year and we'd like to talk with he and you about that".

Wow. (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/story/2012-01-16/gunner-kiel-leaves-lsu-will-join-notre-dame/52607324/1)
Gunner dropped Indiana in November then committed to LSU after Christmas. But then didn't show up for a meeting yesterday because his mom was sad. So he's supposed to be checking in at Notre Dame today. He's going to be a drama king. You can tell already. He graduated before Christmas, so he's enrolling early.
He may be playing for IUPUC or Ivy Tech before the end of the week. Heck, maybe University of Phoenix! They have a stadium, after all.
