shaker style that is. I finally talked the wife into forking out some money for a cd/dvd/vhs cabinet. I'm gonna do it shaker style because the panels are cost effective. (1/4' ply) it'll be red oak. Had to buy the oak from Lowes which sucked, it's alot cheaper to buy rough and true them yourself, but I don't have the power tools to make it easy and hand tools take to long. So hope fully I'll get started this week sometime. So far we have about $150 bucks in it (the hinges were expensive) I'm sure I'll have to pick up more lumber later, but I'm hoping not. The biggest issue is tools I don't have, like a lock miter bit, or a table saw. It'll be interesting to see how many problems I run into, as I haven't made anything since I quit my last job, I noticed making the cut list last night that subtracting 5/32 from 7/8 wasn't without thought as it once was. (if you don't use it you lose it) The design is not great either, there are factors affecting the overall dimensions that are really restricting, but I'll post a pic when I'm done next year

I have an entertainment center that's entering its fourth year of construction. It was coming along nicely until the first kid arrived. I have plenty of motivation to finish it this winter, as my dad and his wood shop will be moving to Tennessee next year.

Sounds like a cool project. I have "plans" (i.e. vague ideas) for our butler's pantry (which is currently an unfinished space next to a closet. But as of yet, have not had the energy to get moving on it. Too many repair jobs around the house still, I guess.

Upload pictures of the work in progress -- keep us inspired!

fourth year? just think by the time you get done it'll already be an antique   is your dad a wood worker?
JD, you made me think of those old farm houses with the butler pantries that were in there own space, 10-15' on one wall, my cousin lived in an old farmhouse for awhile, had one made completely out of Walnut, I think the wood was almost petrified it was so hard, really beautiful though.
I'll post pics when I get something done. Really though I haven't even started building this and there is a ton of stuff I don't like about it, but can't change it due to money or problems with size, or weight capacity (hinges)

My dad's at the hobbiest level, he's not a professional woodworker. My grandfather was the star woodworker of the family. One of his hobbies was antique clocks and all the tools that came with making & repairing clocks. At one time he had over 300 antique clocks in his collection. Every kind of clock you could imagine.

When he passed, the collection and tools were distributed among family members. My father was given the majority of his workshop. Lots of power tools and lots of hand tools.

now that would be cool, to build a clock from scratch. Did he pass any of the mechanics of it on to you? Where would you get the parts for something like that?

I'm really fortunate in that my grandfather was pretty active in the NAWCC (http://www.nawcc.org/) and penned a column for them. In the mid 80's, he took those columns and put them together in the form of a couple of books. Two decades later and the books are still selling. I have a set of the books here at home and will someday likely get into the hobby. As for where to get the parts and stuff, the NAWCC is probably your best starting point for that sort of stuff.

Before my grandparents passed, they asked us to go through the clocks and pick out the ones we wanted. The whole concept was pretty creepy to me. I waited until my mother and aunt had selected the clocks they wanted. Luckily, the one clock I'd admired when I was growing up was still up for grabs. It's a beautiful wall clock with a glass case that allows you to see the movements. This clock sat behind my grandfather's chair, and it was a clock he'd taken great pride in. It was a clock he'd built with his own hands. I chose it not because it was an antique or an expensive clock. I chose it because it he'd built it and was clearly one of his prized possessions.

Right now, that clock sits in my parents house. With little ones around, I'm terribly afraid of something happening to the clock. It's an incredible clock and is something that can't be replaced. I'll see if I can't dig up a picture of it.

well the cabinet is done, the lacquer coat went screwy as I got some particle's blowing out of my sprayer, then on a resand and respray things went even worse, I said screw it, good enough, also the overall design I am not happy with but it had to be what it is because of size limitations, funtional reasons and financial reasons  more money and a bigger house would have helped  the hinges are one example, needed them that big to support the weight, but they don't look great in my opinion, you'll have to forgive the pics, they were taken against the sun, I'll post better ones later, with it full of videos, all in all it was fun, but I need a bigger shop
