Hello,

father of a five month old boy, Cosimo, in Denver. I was working at home, now I am getting nothing done at home, at least as far as work goes. My wife has the higher earning potential as I am still paying the price for my bohemian youth, and frankly I love being here - though we are just starting to think of day care a day or two a week, just so he sees somebody other than me.

Biggest problem at the moment is that he will not sleep unless swaddled, but he is getting too big and strong to keep in a swaddle - I am thinking velcro and bungee cords soon...
Any other suggestions are welcome

Todd

Welcome, Todd. I understand your concerns about the sleep issue. I have an 11 month old son. I just experimented to find out what were the things that calmed him down most. TV, the washing machine, a fan, a bottle, a rocker, and a drive in the car were all things that worked about 6 months ago. Now, we have a specific routine that involves a bottle and reading a book.

Anyway, welcome.

Thanks guys, nice to meet you.

Young-blalock, it is not the getting him to sleep so much, that is usually pretty easy. But he is a bit on the hyperactive side and once he wakes just a bit, he throws off the swaddle blankets and then cant get back to sleep. We have used many different blankets and combinations, I think he might just be too big now and it is time to do away with the swaddling if we can - a few fun nights ahead

Welcome Todd, I know my son has a thing for being covered when he sleeps. He tosses off the blankets and so on when they are put on him if he is somewhat awake. Normally we have to wait until he is completely passed out before we put a blanket on him. So that usually means we bundle him up with clothes instead, usually those footsy sleeper things. Then my son got used to sleeping in our bed leeching the heat from us and now we cant get him into his own crib.. but thats a different story.

We swaddled until around 5 months, along with using a pacifier. He stayed swaddled, but the pacifier gave us a similar problem. It's help him fall asleep, but once it popped out, he was awake. It's the sudden absence that woke him up, so we finally decided to go cold turkey and remove both "sleep aids". The idea being, once he was asleep without them, there'd be nothing to "fall out" and wake him up. It worked for us (we did it in tandem with ferberizing).

Hi Todd. I am also in the Denver area. I am no longer in the SAHD bidness, my kids are all growed up (they think so) but I was for about 10 years.

Happy to talk your ear off or listen, anytime.

Kids are marvelously different.

One of mine as a baby slept like a log from day one, no matter what. We actually had to wake her up to MAKE her eat.

The other, a leaf could fall off a tree six blocks away and she'd be up and screaming.

Ditto the blanket thing. One would never stay covered up, even on the coldest winter nights. We finally realized that this kid runs just a bit hotter than most other people and would put on socks and drop her into a footie and leave the blankets off.
