OK, we REALLY want to get a video camera so I'm looking for suggestions here. I would LOVE to get one of the DVD recorder cameras but I dont think those will be anywhere near our budget range. So what do you all suggest? Also has anyone ever bought one online? I've been told you can save lots of money that way but I have no idea where to look and who to trust.
Thanks in Advance for your input!!
We were in the same boat looking at getting a digital one, but ended up borrowing a hi-8 from Val's folks. Then I bought a doohicky that converts analog (tape) to digital and a dvd burner. Now I can take the footage, digitize it and edit it. Even I get bored watching ten minutes of Tara sleeping or whatever ;)
Plus the grandparents all dig getting two or three movies a year. The thinger I got is built by Pinnacle Systems google them and read more.
good luck with your decision

We just bought a new camera about a 8 months ago, a decent Sony, using 8mm, the newer digital quality 8mm, well it is ok, but having a hard time getting the pics and video onto the computer with the software they provided. I had a 10 year old camera, 8mm, and the guy said it could convert the old video to your PC easily, so far that is not true :?
The ones that record right to DVD are nice but expensive. I almost wish I would have bought one though, record to dvd and your done. Put in the DVD player and enjoy!
For those looking online, I can recommend a few stores but not sure if you'll save, but i do get access to coupons for some stores and might be able to save you a little money.

Any advice on digital cameras? My wife and I are looking for one.
We bought a mini DV model a few years back. A Canon ZR model. It's a nice entry level camera. It shoots very nice footage outdoors, but no so great indoors. Low light can look a bit grainy. I would imagine the newer models are a bit improved.
It can be connected to the TV through RCA connections and to your PC through a firewire connection. Macs have firewire built in, it usually means adding a card to your PC. I haven't had any problems loading video in real time. Mini DV tapes are 60 minutes long. The Sony cameras are NICE, but the tape they use is a proprietary format that can cause you some headaches unless you have a Sony PC. (Think Beta vs VHS). I would suggest heading to Best Buy or CC and playng around with them. You will usually get a better deal online.
Good Luck
