If you have not guessed I am a big fan of Star Wars as is my 5 year old. He has a ton of Lego Star Wars stuff and really enjoys the "Mini figures" of the characters. Names them all, mixes and matches... Even created one for me which is the story behind my screen name. Darth-Daddy.
I have looked on EBAY and HOLLY!!! getting them online is rough. If anyone has some even "PLAYED" with I would be willing to work something out. (No I Do Not want to sell them) He enjoys the little figures so much. I have bought whole sets just for the little guys.
I have found some good deals on sets online, but the people is what he likes.

My son plays nothing but the star wars lego game and huge fan of the legos but your right, they are hard to find. Target had some imperial ship on clearance but it was kind of crappy looking. They had another one but it was $85 on clearance, arghhh.

We got the Millenium Falcon before Christmas at 50% of. Good deal and a real cool kit.
I did get a couple of the little sets last fall really cheap. Still the people are the difficult part.

I have been buying my son the galactic heroes stuff from star wars. They are little "chubby" figures made for like 2yrs and older. So when he turns 2 this year he will have a huge influx of star wars toys. Also when they rereleased all the action figures and different toys, I was a huge collector both for myself and a child I would have in the future. That future has come and he has literally a closet full of brand new unopened star wars toys waiting for him. Yeah i am a Star Wars Junky! As for the legos no matter what type, they are always expensive, you just have to find them on sale. I dont know why its just a bunch of plastic pieces.

Oh I know Legos are expensive. I have 10's of thousands of them. Right now in my toy room there are at least 5 medium to large rubbermaid containers FULL. They are all the Legos from my older brother, younger brother and myself. They were at my parents until they were forced to downsize and then they came here. They were seperated into bins between CASTLE, SPACE, TOWN, PIRATES, TRAIN until one day when my MOTHER IN LAW was babysitting and my Kid Brother In Law (16) and her DUMPED THEM ALL OUT!!! TOGETHER!!! Think about how big a mess Thousands, upon thousands of Legos makes! I have since then seperated them by color and will start building the type of sets he likes first. I need to share these with my Older Brother and his son. Now that makes it tough. (I am just happy at the time the Star Wars Legos (Which is all my son cares about really) were not in the same room!
Why Legos are soooo expensive. Quality. They last forever and can ALWAYS LOCK together. Have you tried to put together Mega Blocks (The Little Ones)

Don't forget the injection molding machines, plants to run them in, a vast marketing and distribution chain, and the luxury of a well-recognized brand name with a long history..... :D
You can get the molds, you just have to knock down a building to get to them. Evidently the Lego company is so protective of their molds, that they bury them in the foundations of new buildings.
Here's a pretty cool history of the Lego block

In order for pieces to have just the right "clutch power", Lego elements are manufactured within a tolerance of 2 micrometres (0.00008 in)
Holy Snikey! That's a tighter tolerance than the pistons in your car's engine!
Just a technical note: 4 decimal places is pretty much airtight! (A piston 1.0000 in diameter in a cylinder of 1.0005 diameter, would hold air without leaking). 5 decimal places is excrutiatingly difficult to attain, generally. Although, apparently not so hard for the people at Lego...impressive, from a technical perspective. :D

Well they have had years and years to perfect it. There is a reason they rank high as toys. Like they said you can take a lego from 1960 and put it together with a piece right off the assembly line. Those kinds of standards are unbelievable.

Yes, it's VERY impressive. We spec our parts at +/- .002 and that's tighter than most other companies in our industry. I can't imagine what it takes to be within two micrometres. Even more impressive is that they'll only have 18 parts fail out of a million!

Not to revive an old thread, but...for the Lego fans: A full size Volvo SUV made entirely out of Leggo's. The pictures do not do it justice.
