View Full Version : Community Website Tutorial?

I've been thinking about adding a tutorial section to the tulsadads.com website so dads could write howto's or other articles that might come in handy as a SAHD.
Specifically, I'm thinking about writing a detailed article about how to create a community website... a website that would be perfect for SAHD groups or any other group.
Do you guys think that would be something that the full time dad community needs? I'm asking because it would take quite a bit of time to write the howto (screenshots, links, lots of text).
For an example, I would show how easy and inexpensive it is to create a website using free CMS software like Joomla (http://www.joomla.org/).

I think your time would be better spent on other activities :D
Dad sites are popping up all the time. Most who don't know how to set up a site won't even with directions or so many web companies offer sitebuilders that they would probably just use that. Blogging is all the rage as well. Everyone and their Dad is setting up blogs.
Plus the thing about local communities, you get a handful of dads and a dead board.
When your site caters to such a small demographic (Do your really believe this? It is estimated that there are nearly 2 million stay-at-home dads in the US. See stats at Rebel Dad, much more realistic Rebel Dad (http://www.rebeldad.com/2005_10_01_archive.html#112851002999853015)) It's hard to get traffic to justify spending so much time on something that might get little use. It's taken me along time to get this site to evolve into a pretty active site (6 years online). Between not having enough time to do alot of upgrades and not doing some upgrades because traffic did not support it.
Don't hesitate to ask for link to content on your site from this site. I'm always looking to add good links :)
Just my 2 cents :)

Tulsadad.. It is very hard to do.. I started my site last December so it is very new and only a few members, but I have worked very hard on it and spent quite alot of time on it too. I went a different direction than Don-dad (which he has a great site and I spend time here too). You have to have a theme so to speak, so I came up with "A community for dads, by dads to help dads". Just a community for ALL dads. I have alot of ideas and such, just not enough time to do it in. Good thing it's a continual thing.
Hopefully one day it will pick up but I still have so much work to do on it. I'm sure that Don-dad has worked his butt off with just trying to get this site active and I think he did a great job!

Sao, that is most impressive work. For your next challenge, you should recreate da Vinci's Last Supper with emoticons.
