I have an easy question - or what I assume would be an easy question.

Every now and then, it seems after I play a video clip on RealPlayer, I lose the sound in my CPU. Speakers are hooked up fine ... sound card is working fine ... nothing is amiss, but I can't seem to get the sound back. Re-starting the computer, checking the Volume Control, etc.

Today is when I thought maybe a "mute" button from some software was overriding my cpu's sound (just shows you how non-technical I am ... my other thought was that the Russians were going to knock out our communication systems prior to dropping the Bomb on us). I opened RealPlayer and no sound ... I adjusted the sound control on Real Player and suddenly I had sound.

Any ideas on this?

You confused me, so you have sound or don't have sound, or it's hit and miss? and what are you talking about with your cpu? :???:

Off the cuff I'd say see if there is an updated driver for your sound card/or mobo if it's one and the same, at the manufacturers website. If it only happens with realplayer then look for an updated version or uninstall and reinstall. That's all I got :(

Yeah I have sometimes had the "phantom volume control" where it just changes settings at will. Also sometimes certain programs alter the lvls through volume control in the task bar. Normally i just put all settings to 90% and use the volume control on my speakers. The drivers thing could be something to check. Do you have onboard sound or use like SB or the like?

I have sound, but occasionally it disappears for seemingly no reason. Today, after 20 minutes, I opened RealPlayer and adjusted the volume bar -- then the sound kicked in. Prior to that I couldn't get any sound in any program whatsoever, nor could I get it from my DVD/CD player.

I don't know if the RealPlayer sound adjustment was what solved it, but I'll try that again next time. When I opened RealPlayer, the volume setting was set all the way up and it was not on "Mute."

For my CPU I mean this - I have a tuner hooked up to my speakers, in addition to my CPU. The tuner still transmits sound when the computer isn't, so I know it's not the speakers.

what OS are you running, what sound card or motherboard?

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition .... default sound card (I think) is Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC.

It happened again this morning. Last night I viewed video clips with RealPlayer, QuckTime and Windows Media player. This morning I had no sound. I just opened up RealPlayer and fiddled with the sound and it came back on.

Very strange.

Try removing the RealPlayer and see if that solves the problem.

I'll give that a try ... technically one doesn't need more than one media player like Real Player or Windows Media player, correct?
