View Full Version : Disposable VS Cloth

My wife and I are expecting our 2nd child in the fall. With our first son, we used Pampers disposable diapers which I found to be very convenient and practical. My wife is keen on using a local cloth diaper service which is basically a velcro fastened cloth diaper and plastic pant over top.
The company picks up the dirty ones once a week and drops of a clean stash. The thought of cloth diapers does not appeal to me as a stay at home Dad. Anyone have any experience with a cloth diaper service? What do you find you spend a week on diapers? I am curious to compare prices. I enjoyed reading the diaper brand thread which shows that most of you are using disposables.... :)
We had pretty high asperations when Tara was first born and started with cloth diapers. At the time it was 18$/week for 72 diapers if I remember correctly. As she would use less they would drop off less and charge less.
We did it for maybe a week when she was newborn. They just go through sooo many and it was fairly tedious... if they piddle even a little you have to change it otherwise she rashed. We thought maybe we'd wait until she got a little older and then try, but by then I had completely given up and said "no".
Another set of friends used disposable for the first month then switched and used cloth until their daughter was potty trained and was very pleased with it.
It just wasn't for us
good luck with your decision...

First off, hello and welcome to the site.
Regarding diapers, never tried cloth ourselves. We started with Pampers and found it to be expensive so we tested other cheaper brands to see how things went. Most of them leaked. We found that Dri-Bottoms work well for our kids. Our relatives tried this with their kids and it didn't work for them. I think the reason is our kids are built differently and so the Dri-Bottoms fit snugger.
I think it all depends on what fits your kid and prevents rash and leakage. THese are all different factors that will determine what you use.
Test out a few options.
Good luck and let us know how it all turns out. :D

Its great your considering a more environmentally friendly solution but I can't imagine dealing with cloth diapers personally. Seems like way too much handling, rinsing, soaking, etc.
If you are on the go out of the house alot you don't want to have to transport a bunch of smelly diapers around with you. Absorbency probably will be an issue with cloth. They just aren't made of the same material as premium disposables which tend to hold alot of urine. As for saving money, I think disposables would be cheaper especially if you buy larger jumbo packs at a time. I'd say if your going to be the one changing the majority of the diapers as a stay at home father, you should have a big say in the decision 8)
CLOTH?!
No thank you! My parents had 4 kids and I was one of the oldest which meant that I would have to help with the younger two. Cloth diapers are cheaper, per say...but not for me.
Just think of it this way....your lovely child decides to leave you a dirty diaper and she has the runs. Ok, you smile at her as you are cleaning her up...Ahhhhh! :D You put her down and off she goes, how cute!
Now, you have to take the nasty present to the toilet and clean it out. Most diaper services (around here) require you to clean the diaper of all residue (no poopy please). That means that you would need to clean, not rise, the diaper off. A little rinse and a ring out by hand...no thank you!
Give me disposables any day! Hey, get a membership at Sams, Cosco, or BJs and buy in BULK! Cheaper that way by my standards. The wives have great ideas, but then again....they do not have to deal with the little ones for 8-10 a day. They get the clean, happy baby for the last couple of hours before nite-nite time!

Does anyone actually dunk the "content" out of disposables?
I don't buy the "environmentally friendly" bit too much.
You have to use bleach to clean them, and you have to use hot water over three or four washes... just doesn't add up.
Hugo, nope, wrap 'em up and chuck 'em, thats what I do.

Nope...that is what the Walmart bags are for. Roll it up and put it in the bag, tie it off and you are good to go for at least 2 days in the trash!
I KNEW that those little bags would come in handy!!

We seriously considered doing cloth diapers for our Jack our second by the time we got around to actually doing it we didnt. I also had lots of reservations about them and I think I wore down my wife on the issue because I was going to be the one cleaning the little buggers. To each his own.
I have a friend though who has a two year old and they swear by them. In fact they were a force behind us thinking about trying it. I see how many times they have to change him and I kind of go whew! glad we chose disposable.
