View Full Version : Dog crap!

Does anybody know of a way to dissuade dogs from crapping in a specific area?

Our neighbourhood has back alleys and our garage is behind our house backing onto the alley. I keep the running stroller in the garage. For our walks we come and go from the overhead garage door since it’s simpler than navigating the smaller door, the gates and the stairs to get to the street.

It would seem almost every dog owner in our neighbourhood believes the back alleys are pooper-scooper free zones. I’m cleaning up dog piles in front of my garage door and along my back fence almost every day.

I can’t see what’s going on back there from the house because the garage and the fence block my view. I thought putting a motion light on the garage might help, at least in the winter when it’s dark most of the time. I’m also considering covering all the grass back there with patio stones.

Any suggestions?

Well, being the brazen person I am, would put a big sign:

Hey YOU, stop letting your dog take a $hit by my garage or you might wake up with it smeered on your door!

lol but then again the people here would do it to spite. Have I mentioned I hate NY? =p

On a serious not, I think you can buy a chemical which is found to be offensive to dogs and you can put it around your garage.

Sorry Bollux, I hypered the words to shorten the links. I had to scroll to the side so I changed it.
Hope you don't mind.

Cecil, we have a borderline aggressive poop watch in our neighborhood. There is a retired lady, a stay home dad, a sahm, and a woman on disability who will regularly yell out windows and doors "You ARE going to pick that up, right?!?"
People walking their dog through the alley routinely go shifty-eyed and step faster.
Doesn't help you, except you might ask your neighbors if they see anything.
Good luck!

I’m sure it’s effective, but what kind of pile would that leave on my lawn?

One of our former neighbors had a motion activated anti-deer whistle that freaked our dog out. Doubt if he'd have taken the time to even pee in front of that house. It's barely audible to people, but you can tell you've activated something. Might also make the dog owners a bit paranoid about lettting the dogs do what they do.

Or, put a "These premises under video survelience" sign out.

This is what I found on the internet from a famous organic gardening guy. He's legit, but it does sound gross.

"Dogs and cats are best repelled by spraying or drenching a tea made by soaking their poop in water. Sounds gross we know but it really works."

I didn't know dogs could drink tea.

That sounds worong -- I thought they are attracted by the smell so that they know where to go. (Which is why it is so important to get rid of the odor if a puppy soils a carpet.)

I like the sign ideas... and maybe you could make some tea out of the lion poop... might scare the dogs off

Hey, there's an idea. Make up the tea and serve it to the owner of the dog. They'll be sure to keep away from you after that. :D

I've often wondered about the feasability of running a small amount of current through the ground, when the dog or cat pees it grounds out and shocks the ... yeah, out of it.
Those of you who were around last year remember my rant of the dog that came in our yard to leave horse sized piles by the kids sandbox. Thats when we went with the fence instead of more violent means.

I’ve put in a request with the city for some signs, the official type that state the bylaw number and the fines. I don’t think I should have to shell out for signs to keep some one else’s dog from crapping in front of my garage.

As for the ‘tea’. I think I could get some pretty exotic stuff from the zoo. Would elephant or buffalo work?

Alternately I can give you the home recipie for ammonium tri-iodide. Shock sensitive when dry but one can handle it when it's wet. It crumbles to something like salt granules which make an alarming "Bang" when stepped on. Unfortunately an amount the size of a sugar cube could remove your fingers.

Are you hanging out with Crazy Chemist? :D

I wish Louis was my neighbor.

That way my neighbors would quit looking at me like I'M the weird one.
