I was wondering if anybody else found that staying at home has changed your diet? And if so, is it for the better or worse?
When I worked I didn't have that ease to go into the kitchen and make me that quadruble decker sandwich with all the meat known to man kind, with pickles, onions, tomatoes, oil, salt, pepper, etc....
Now I can make whatever I want whenever I want. I drink coffee all morning.
I try to take the kids out more and that helps in a lot of ways.
But even if we are outside I can walk through that door and paw through the cupboards for chips, dip, cookies, anything...
Does anybody else find themselves eating a lot more now?
When I started on this journey I would graze constantly. When I worked for a paycheck I was moving all the time and it helped keep me less, um, rotund...
I probably put on 20lbs in the last 18months, and subsequently dropped 10 of them, hows that for a yo yo.
Now when we go grocery shopping, we skip the stuff that we know I'll just grub down. I've got two serious weaknesses, chips and doughnuts. Can't have them in the house. And I never EVER go grocery shopping hungry, man thats just dangerous.
Trying to cut back on my coffee too, thats just as tough.
Oh, and try having fresh beer on tap in the basement!
aaah well

I stopped keeping beer in the fridge.
One was I felt weird with it in there and kids being home. Also I had to move all my collection of bottled wine down in the basement. I had them all nice and pretty sitting in wine racks all over the house. By the fire place or out on the kitchen counter. I would then see it and uncork a bottle at noon. By the time my wife got home the bottle was empty and I would be singing with the kids...
My wife would say, "you are drunk aren't you?"
DUH!
But I felt that drinking alone, other than a beer or 2, was not really fun and kind of selfish. So, I had to put up deterants.
I hear ya,
Its just too easy to draw a pint in the afternoon, have one with dinner, maybe after Tara's asleep, or two...
Adds up quick around the waist!
I did have the dieting issue in the beginning because of boredom!
But I kicked its ass by joining the YMCA. We joined the "family" plan. Very nice...my son can swim, daughter (2) can play with other 2 year olds and I can work out.
We still have snacks in the house, but they are more of the lighter side. Such as Veggie Chips, lo-cal ice cream (Breyers 98% fat free), etc... My wife does the cooking and has ALWAYS been on a healthy kick ever since I have known her.
And no....we are not veg heads....MEAT is a staple for me!! I do have a HUGE weakness for chocolate though.....

My wife was the first to notice. I had gained about 10 pounds in the first 4 or 5 months. She started buying veggies and fruits and then I kept telling her that we needed to get more food in the house. Then she dragged me to the fridge and showed me all of the wonderful snacks.
The problem was I was thinking they weren't snacks. I wanted the chips and cookies and candy!
She is like, "if you are hungry we have 12 carrots in that drawer in the fridge right here and you peel it and rinse it under water and then eat it. Cut some up for the kids."
This was me ----> :(

Close! My daughter's name is Elizabeth.
My wife's name is Jessica!
I keep thinking the carrots are for her and she is gonna do something with it or cook them up in a stew. And I even tell her this. Then she says why is it you don't think that about other foods, just the vegetables?
She had a good point!
We've got the Y membership as well. You know the best part of it? When my wifes job takes her out of town, we go with and instead of spending the whole day in the hotel or trying to find a place to play, most YMCA's have a program where if you are members at one place, they'll let you in for free or reduced rate. Comes in handy out of town.
The only drawback has been this winter, every time we (Tara and I) went to the Y a few days later she'd come down with a cold or worse. It started with colds, then earinfections probably because her immune system was weakend from the cold... then three weeks ago we were in the ER with a RSV infection! Sucked man, she was having trouble breathing, her blood O2 was down, super scary.
She's healthy now, so we're trying it again, but man, its tough to justify a two hour work out for a two week sick kid...
wow, sorry for the long post

love snacking and trying to justify it with a good work out at the YMCA. Our Y is great but my youngest seems to get all his ilnesses from that place. Thses dang stay at home moms just love to take their sick children everywhere :D
And the worst part is one of the moms who WORKS there brought her daughter in all snotty and sneezy! (No she wasn't working at the time, she was just there for the workout.)

I do find myself eating more often, but for me it works. I eat something about every 2 hours. Typical day:
Granola bar/oatmeal (6:30 AM)
yogurt/scrambled eggs (8:30 am)
Snack(chex mix, carrots, whatever fits in a small cup) (10:30 am)
Normal Lunch (sandwich and a side of something)(Noon)
Sweet snack(3PM)
Normal Dinner(6PM)
Sweet Snack/chips(8 PM)
I drink coffee until about 10AM, then 1 or 2 diet sodas, then water the rest of the day (maybe a glass of milk with dinner).
Again, for me "grazing" :) has worked, after 8 months, I haven't put on any weight.
Dadaland, great job on the quitting smoking. That's one of the best things I ever did (quit in 2000 after 14 years). Good luck with it.

I've gained about 20-25 pounds since my first was born over 2 years ago. I still eat more than I used to, but my main problem was lack of exercise, especially when the 2nd came along.
I'm now back on a regular exercise program (I had to put my foot down and insist my wife get home from work at a decent hour 2 days a week) and am feeling great.
We also bought a new bike for the wife and a trailor for the kids. I plan on getting my bicycle fixed-up this week so we can all go riding together, or I can take the kids out on my own. We usually go for walks most day, but with the kids, the walk is VERY slow.
Next I plan to work on my eating. We eat quality food for the most part, but my problem is portion control. I'm still working on that!
