the floors look great! what a difference.
I noticed your wife on the couch a few times, put her to work for god's sake and your kid is going to go blind sitting that close to the TV. What about that huge dirty albino rat? :P
Make we want to go down and start the basement. Ar, Ar, Ar!

Those floors look great...Love the color. How difficult was the lighting to install?

Yeah, the flooring is sweet. Carpeting is ok..but wood is a must. Though in the kitchen, tiles are king.
And what do I have in my entire apartment......vinyl cr@p

I put the recessed lighting in our loft and it was pretty easy. Just cut a hole in the ceiling, drop the lighting in from above, and wire up a pair of wires and a ground. I even got fancy and tied ours into the same light switch as the fan lights and tied them all into a dimmer switch. Of course the room's so bright we don't even use the fan lights, but they're there if we need them. 8)
So long as you have easy access above the ceiling, it's an easy project to do.

Very nice... The paint also helps give the room a more open feel.

There's the rub. I want to put the lights in the living room on the first floor of a two story house.

in the first pictures there's a key holder thing by the front door, then in the last pictures there's a cross next to it. Did the job get so rough that you found god somewhere in between? nice job as well
if the wire isn't already run for the recessed lighting then that's the biggest issue Will, you could cut out a small portion of the ceiling to run your wire, then patch it and put a texture on the ceiling to cover the patch, a swirl texture using a masons brush is fairly easy and looks very nice as well.

Does the room adjoin the garage?

Negative. The master bedroom is just above and it has wonderful oak floors.

Use a really long drill bit to make holes in the joists though the hole for the can. Use a right angle drill. You want to bore thru the centerline of the joists so as to not compromise strength.
I had access from the attic - tight, at times - but not impossible.
If you have a second floor above - you will definitely need IC rated cans. These won't set your insulation on fire! Which, is a plus! They dissipate heat and have thermal overloads to protect in case they get too hot!

That'd be the rat-dog!
After approximately 7 gallons of sawdust, we finally got to see what the floor might look like. 2 days of sanding thru the mung!
3 coats of polyurethane, new molding around the edges, and painting the walls - priceless!
Rat-dog took a stroll thru the first coat of poly. I had to sand it out and re-apply. Always a fun time!

Thanks for the advise everyone. This thread has inspired me and I'll have to give it some thought. Won't tell the wife though. No sense in getting her hopes up, eh?
