Hey guys! I have been real busy this week fixing up my yard. Over near the fence there were weeds that went up to my nose. These weeds were covering an area that was roughly 10 feet long and 40-50 feet wide. I dug up all the weeds and turned over all the dirt and leveled the ground and seeded it. I am gonna add so much more lawn to it. The people that owned the house a long time ago just left it weedy and the neighbors would throw junk over into it never to be seen again.
Until now.... lol
It looks awsome though. Anyway that is where I have been. whewee! 8)
How has everybody been? How is the situation in Florida?
Wow, that sounds like a chore! It also sounds almost as big as my entire yard
Speakin' of projects, we painted the walls, ceiling and floor of my new office. Gonna get some carpet next week and then its move in time! (thats where my free time goes.)

Rem, turning the weeds over? Won't they just grow again? I hope you used some weed killer, hehehe!

I too have been doing a lot of deck work. My parents are visiting, and yesterday, my Dad and I went to work. The deck is a great size, and the foundation of it is good, but the railing was falling off, and the wood is pretty messed up (looks like it hasn't been treated in a decade). So we went and rebuilt and reinforced the railings, to try to get a couple more years out of it. Looks pretty good too!
Tomorrow we set up my new table saw in the basement. Wee hee, a new toy!
Rem - any advice on leveling a lawn? We have a real low area in ours that always floods after a rain. Think we'll have to add a bunch of topsoil, and grade it out into the woods behind the yard... but I've never done that.
Dan
Hey guys, thought I'd add, I put the carpet down tonight. Just got some minor details to finish, like the floor trim and oh... a door.
;)
cheers, hope everyone's weekend was good!

Glad it worked for you - I am impressed. Laying carpet is something I just wouldn't want to do myself.. We just had an unfinished room turned into my studio. It's a big space, and getting carpet installed would be so expensive, so we just left it as bare subflooring. Gives it a sort of artsy workspace kind of vibe.
I finished up my projects as well. Our deck is now safe to use, with the sagging railing all snugged up and tightened. Next I have to figure out a way to rescue the cruddy splintering decking (that probably hasn't been treated in over ten years). I hope to patch it together for another couple years before having to replace it all. Anyone have any ideas of some decent outdoor carpeting or matts that can cover a deck but still let rain through, etc?
Hey, the bambino is asleep! Awesome I can get to bed early... woo hoo!
Dan
Yeah, its a smallish room but I was still sweating bullets at the end. Thankfully we went with a carpet that had a pad right on so I didn't have to monkey with tack strips (it'd be a biatch on concrete floor). I also wouldn't want to try it in a bigger room!
Good luck with your outdoor rug search, Dan! We had some covering our front porch, and when it tore and we pulled it up, we found out that one corner is rotting away (they probably covered it to hide that spot for the selling of the house).
aah, owning a home!

Don, the weeds do grow back but you can use weed and feed. A lot of complaints with weed and feed but you have to do it properly. You can't put too much on or it will burn up your grass you are trying to have grow. It has to be light. Picture the weed and feed as table salt and the lawn as food (steak maybe). Sprinkle the lawn with the weed and feed as if you were salting a your food. People get too excited and really go too thick with it.
Jackson's Dad, I am not much of a pro when it comes to leveling lawns. But I just rake and rake the dirt so that it "looks" level. If you are getting puddles on a certain spot you may need to get fill but also remember that filling doesn't work alone. Try actually spreading the dirt out so that it is NOT level. The water needs to runoff and go somewhere. So a slight tilt away will help the water run somewhere.

Either that, or we just dig a hole and call it a pond. :) We had landscaper come out to look, since our yard has certain "issues". One is a low spot in back that pools up whenever it rains, and stays that way for days (mosquito hazard). I assumed we might need drains or something fancy, but his professional recommendation was what you said: new top soil, and angle it to drain towards the back of the yard (which is low land, leading to some wetlands). One of these days, we'll try it.
For right now, our next yard project will be to take this oddball corner between the garage, house, and deck, and do it over in gravel or lava stone -- something more attractive than the current patch of mud and moss.
Dan
Hey, don't sweat the mosquito hazzard, it takes more then a few days for them to lay, hatch and emerge!

Luckily our county has a mosquito commission, so we can always call them up to inspect-and-spray. He said that if the water stays around for 5-7 days on a regular basis, then we should call them in. So far, our max is 3-5 days during the spring rains. So we should be pretty lucky.
Maybe I'll just plant some water-sucking bushes there, like pussywillow, and call it a day.
Or dig yourself a pond, get some cool looking koi or goldfish to eat all the larvae, lillie pads and a nice little bench to sit on when the little one is asleep, eh?
ok, its past my bed time, I'm getting rammy
