I'm thinking of taking some online courses... possibly math, statistics courses.

Anyone have any experience/advice on the subject?

Thanks!

I have an MBA in Technology Management that I got through directed study courses from University of Phoenix. No classroom, flexible schedule. Loads of written work tho, quite intense at times.

I did my M.S.Ed. online thru Capella University. Like DaddyO said, it can be a lot of intensive work at times. I really enjoyed it, though. I don't think I spent more than a couple hours a day doing work. The hardest part is reading through all the posts and responding to them. (You're usually required to make 3-5 thorough responses.)

I'm doing an online graduate program now by taking one class per semester. I probably spend an hour or two each day reading, etc. Some subjects work better than others online, imo, and online courses require a lot more self-dicsipline than traditional courses, but the obvious advantage that brings is flexibility.

I guess I don't even know where to start...

My problem is that I haven't been to school in over 13 years now and I really screwed up my GPA when I was there. I'm worried that I wouldn't get accepted into any kind of legit program with my history... or is there a statute of limitations on grades? lol.

As of right now, the plan is that I'll go back to work when the youngest starts school (about 5 years from now) so I've got plenty of time to change career paths, but I do want to start planning now.

I guess if I had to I could go back to doing what I did before (electrician), but I really really really really really really would rather not.

University of Phoenix has a decent rap, I think. And they want your money, so I doubt your very old GPA will matter much.

You might also check the local Community Colleges, I know when I was in GA, the CC I worked for had an extensive online curriculum and they could care less about GPA. You graduated high school, you're in!

Sounds good... I'll check out both.

Thanks guys for all your input

Do you care about grades, or want to do something you need certification for? If so, your grades may be a factor. But if you are going to just learn something new, then you could always audit a class and not worry about the grades at all.

We have a bunch of small colleges in the area, and a lot of them offer some sort of community program for auditing classes, etc. My father-in-law's taken a bunch of these since he's retired (politics, art history, literature, the works).

A few years ago I would have gone the auditing route, but now part of my decision is wanting a new career path :???:

You should do the GC thing! Hire a crew and get busy!

What ever yo do, you gotta dive in head-first and go for it!

Oh, and never! ever! mortgage the house against the business!

Ever!........In case, you missed that.....ever! :D

Jeff-

GC thing or something similar, maybe a backup plan... I'm feeling old and my bones are getting too tired to do too much more construction type jobs.

Louis-

Thanks man, that is quite generous of you... BTW, you sure are connected. Exactly how many people do you know?!?

I'd recommend against being a General Contractor. These days is pretty much sucks. Finding quality workers is about impossible unless you hire illegals and then you need to speak Spanish.

I think I know enough Spanish to possibly get by in a working situation... Good friend of mine I worked with is from Mexico and he taught be quite a bit.

I know there's a lot of hassles being a GC though... and homeowners can be the worst kind of "boss"
