We need to start our own political party. The Stay at Home Dads Party.

Frances looks bad for Florida right now. I wouldn't wait. I would just move North for a while.

I know several people who have booked plane tickets just on the chance that Frances might come here. We can't go even if we wanted to. Between my wife's job and having foster children, we are stuck no matter what.

My SIL in Orlando says that her local news is anticipating Cape Canaveral area as one of the points of landfall. They have already cancelled Thur & Fri public schools in her area, govt offices, also closed.

As we know it could shift direction several times in the next two days and severly impact a completely different area :-/

It isn't over til it's over...

Guess those of us in FLA will be watching way too much news in the next few days.

They did revise the building codes after the disaster in Homestead (Andrew), assuming the builders didn't cut corners, etc.

There are also A LOT of older homes in the area, with a lot of older people who after years of "misses" are fairly complacent and ignore a lot of the news regarding the storms.

You even have folks in mobile homes that stay put, determined not to leave home. 8-/

Looks like those of us in Tampa/St Pete will be on the tail end, expecting 60-70 mph winds and lots of rain.

Orlando is apparently buzzing. I hear from my SIL every 8 hours or so and she says everyone is in a panic. She seems a bit unsettled, which for her is very unusual!!! Landfall is projected fro between Palm Beach and Cape Caneveral, but of course could move at anytime...

Hope everyone over there is getting their homes and families ready! Stay safe!!!!

I can tell you that homes, even mobile homes, built here after Andrew did MUCH better in Charley than did pre-Andrew homes. The improved building codes made a huge difference. That's part of why you might see one home standing in a picture where all the rest are destroyed. It was the only one built after Andrew.

It's starting to buzz around here. Schools are starting to close already, as are government offices. The area is getting ready to be invaded by evacuees from the east coast, and there are already a fair amount who have come here to ride it out. Our area is planning to open quite a few shelters with the intention of having them for east coasters looking for refuge. Our hardest hit areas, though, won't even have shelters for locals because they are all damaged from Charley. They are telling Arcadia resisents to go to Sarasota.

Good luck guys, My family will be praying for all of you down there. As exciting as it was for me to stand on the shore of N.C. during charlie, I was thinking the whole time if this was a big storm, we would be in a world of hurt, this one coming looks to me to be a big storm. Just be careful, and get out of there if you can. Hell, come to philly and spend a few days with me, I'll take you out on the town, and show you the sights and sounds of philly.

I bet if John Kerry comes here he wont order wizz, maybe they learned their lesson on how philadelphians like their cheesesteaks.

And then comes Ivan

Tropical Depression Nine, very soon to be Tropical Storm Ivan, and expected to be Hurricane Ivan by Monday formed in a very similar place as Charley and is headed pretty much due west under the islands. Time will tell where he goes.

It may be time for us Florida boys to take an extended vacation in California. Anyone ready for an earthquake as a change of pace?

I lived in San Francisco for 8 years, and never felt a quake (there was one, but I was driving, and you don't feel the mild ones when you are on the road). My brother? He moved out there in 1989, and a couple months later the last Big One hit (they are still making repairs). It all comes down to luck I guess.

Then again, they don't get earthquakes every few weeks! Florida must have this big target painted on its side! "Kick Me".

When I was a kid we had a hurricane hit but they are actually quite rare up here.

Comcast broadcast a local ABC affiliate out of florida, and during the whole storm, I was glued to the TV watching all the coverage of it, That was one crazy storm. I hope all of you bid well in the storm.

I was very lucky on this one. Especially compared to how the east coast did. We got the equivalent of a normal nasty Florida summer thunderstorm. The only thing is that instead of lasting an hour it lasted 2 days. Our maximum sustained winds were around 40 mph and we got LOTS of rain. The weather is still unsettled and it's currently pouring as I look out the window by my computer. No damage to the house or property this time, though the same fence that fell over with Charley almost came down again.

I know the Orlando area took a pretty good pounding. The worst was at the West Palm Beach area where the storm stopped just offshore for several hours before crawling through the state. This one knocked out power to 6 million. Thankfully I wasn't one of them.

As of the last advisory Hurricane Ivan is a possible threat to the west coast of Florida for early next week. At least my mom will have finally managed to get out of here. She has definately decided she has no use for Florida weather during the summer.

A sad note, the areas that were the hardest hit from Charley probably got about another foot or so of rain, as well as some high winds. I have not heard how much more damage occured there.

OK, this is getting ridiculous. After 2 hurricanes in 3 weeks I'm getting pretty darned nervous about Ivan now. I just looked at the latest projection, and it is for a landfall just slightly north of where Charley made landfall. The prediction I've heard so far is that Ivan may be stronger than Charley at landfall. It is being predicted to make it to Catagory 5 strength, which is what Andrew was when it made landfall. I recognize that this is a projection for 5 days out, and those are usually wrong, but I am a bit gunshy at this point. I am going shopping for hurricane supplies tomorrow for the third time this year. With each hurricane I get more nervous and go get additional supplies. Although, it may be slim pickings this time. The supply trucks, as of yesterday, are still not in to restock things like batteries and such following the Frances rush. Even gas is in short supply right now.

I don't know if it's my gut or just my nerves, but I have a really bad feeling about Ivan. I've had this feeling since it first formed as a tropical storm, but it's been getting worse as time goes by. Since my gut is usually right, I'm praying that it's only my nerves. I'll know in 5 days.

Hello one and all!

Orlando checking in. Charley sucks and so does Frances. Now this Ivan thing is pissing me off! I feel that someone upstairs is trying to make Florida an island!

We faired FAR better this time around than we did with Charley. I was ready for Frances. Boards on the windows, generator in the garage (off of course), and batteries and water ready to go.

I REFUSE to take off my wood from my windows, because as soon as I do, Ivan is going to make me pay for it! THAT'S IT....time to break camp and move!

Damn...the wife did not buy it! :)

If Ivan does head to my house ONCE again, I am hiding out at FloridaMcMarions house! :P

I have been patching everyone's roof in my neighborhood! Time to get paid for it.

You are welcome to come SAHF, though I don't know how wise that would be. :-k If you get Ivan then I've probably already had him come to visit me, based on his current location and path.

I got LOTS of water and baby formula this morning. Also stocked up on canned soup and veggies. I have a camp stove with 4 propane bottles, as well as my gas grill with a full tank. I also got my van filled up.

What do think Floridians????????.......do we all go visit Philly for the weekend? :D :D :D Get the cheesesteaks ready boys, Florida is coming up for the weekend :!: :!:

From what I am hearing this is worse than Frances, You guys are getting pounded this year.

The farmer's almanac called it, and also says alot of snow in the north, especially around Duluth.

Seriously though, alot of snow in the northeast and north this winter.

tt3
09-10-2004, 12:39 PM
I'd love to have a bumper crop of snow this year. We keep getting shorted and having sucky winters. I live up here for the snow ya know? What happened to the 6ft drifts!

Good luck floridians.

Don-Dad
09-10-2004, 01:33 PM
keep your 6 foot drifts. We had over 190 inches of snow last year and we are moving 10 minutes north and the snow is worse, they got over 240 inches. :P

Sweet!
I tried to find the records for Duluth, but I don't have much time.
I wish I could get out and enjoy it more, but we'll have another newborn in the house, can't hardly go ccskiing with her.
ah well, maybe next year.

I was just teasing about the duluth remark, but this is supposed to be a good year for snow according to the almanac.

Damn that is alot of snow Don, We used to get alot of snow in Iowa when I was a kid, the first year I moved to PA we got alot of snow, but last year was a bust, hardly any snow.

tt3
09-10-2004, 04:54 PM
Tease away Mike, no prob!
There was one winter maybe two or three years ago when Charleston SC had more snow on the ground then we did. We got back from vacation and had to take our freakin' jackets off at the DULUTH airport! Crazy weather man.
Good luck in Florida folks!

I grew up in Buffalo, so lots of snow was a given. I remember storms that would hit where the snow would fall so fast, the streets would clog behind the snow plows. One year the mayor stopped the plows altogether to wait it out. When the local news folks complained, he yelled back "just go grab a six pack and chill out." Ah, Jimmy Griffin - now THERE was a mayor! ;-)

Don-Dad
09-10-2004, 09:15 PM
Hehehe, I remember Jimmy Griffin, hehe

Last winter we got socked pretty good and north of here, were I went to college in Oswego, NY, they had close to 300 inches or some crazy number like that. THey closed down the city every couple of days. I live north of Syracuse, just above the thruway and thats where the snow starts to get heavy.

floridamcmarion1
09-11-2004, 12:18 AM
Don, I was going to ask if you lived close to Syracuse. The snow amounts sounded familiar. My sister in law and her family live there. Her husband grew up in Syracuse and they moved back after meeting at the University of Miami, via a short stay in Cleveland. I've been up once to visit. It's a nice area. My wife and I plan to go up in December in another few years, once all our kids are old enough to enjoy freezing their a@@e@ off in the snow. I also miss seeing a good blizzard, so I hope to have some nasty storms while we're there. My sister in law's husband's family also owns a house in Sodus Point, 3 houses from the water. That is a great little lighthouse. That area is also where I've tasted the best cheese curds I've ever had.

tt3
09-11-2004, 01:14 AM
If you want to talk cheese curds, ya gotta try fresh curds from Wisconsin! Every time we visit my folks, I've gotta bring back a pound or two for everyone!
mmmmm.... growing up we called them squeaks, because if they were fresh enough they would squeek in you mouth!
Gotta love it!

Don-Dad
09-11-2004, 01:27 AM
I don't think I have ever had a cheese curd :?

Florida (man I need to get some first names with screen names, hehehe)

Syracuse is not a bad place to live and raise your kids. My wife and I lived in Atlanta for 7 years and moved back after the first child was born. Georgia schools are not that great and my wifed miss my family. Only real downside, besides the loooonnngggg winter is alot of miserable folks. So many jobs have left for the south or overseas and all the big companies seem to be falling. People tend to get discouraged. Lifes too short so I try to stay upbeat, plus we seem to be doing just fine, nothing to make me miserable. :D

Don, is there a way to set up the software so that a person's real name shows up under their handle? (or maybe we should just put them in our signatures...)

Putting them in the signatures is probably the way to go.

I'm now holding my breath for another reason. It looks like I'll be OK, but my mother-in-law lives in Fort Walton Beach (near Pensacola) on the panhandle. She lives on a barrier island in a first floor condo one block from the beach. If she gets a strong hit and it has the storm surge they say may come, I may have her living with me for a while.

It may be time for me to evacuate from Hurricane Loretta!

floridamcmarion1

You are right, SAHF......Loretta is my mother-in-law. She could cause more havoc than Ivan any day. My worst fear is that she evacuates to here and then loses her condo and stays for an indefinate period. That may be where my bad gut feeling had come from concerning Ivan!
