My computer has decided to put up resistance and when starting normally it does not display the welcome screen. It boots up but then goes to a black screen and nada shows up. In safe it works fine though... any clues on how to fix?

This would always happen to me when my wife left her iPod hooked up to our PC via firewire. Had to disconnect it to get a proper boot.

Yeah check any thing hooked to the USB drives and or a Disk in the CD/DVD drive.

My Compact Flash Card for my camera kills me everytime.

A friend has issues with a music CD

It could be reading something... Safe mode always worked for me as well..

that's odd :???: shouldn't make a difference if it is set to boot from hardrive in BIOS. I'd check your BIOS bollux.

oh DaddyOP did you figure out what the deal was with your comp? UPDATE YOUR THREAD!!!!

Did you check the event log for errors? Any new software or hardware installed?

i got it to work but took forever and now, it has reverted to like 98 start menu versions and such. and before you ask it is set to xp version in toolbar options.....i fear the pc is dying.... might need complete whipe. =/

could run a scandisk or something similar, perhaps the HDD is becoming corrupted..

If it works fine in safe mode.. might mean a virus or other malware.

Then of course, the standard checks:
Heat - check for dust clogs, etc
Weird Sounds - could be HDD, Fan, PS, etc

Quick question Bollux was this pc upgraded to Windows XP or was it a clean install?

Well if you can't work backward and find anything you've recently changed, i.e. software installs or hardware changes and the hard drive in question isn't new. Then I'd recommend replacing it, the symptoms you've described all point to hard drive failure (weird boot problems, drive running slow etc) These days you can get a great hard drive for next to nothing (check the circulars). The great thing about doing this is that you don't have to lose any data off your current drive, just put it in as a secondary drive and copy anything you need to the new one. Just a suggestion (when I worked outside the home, I repaired PC's for a living), good luck!
