View Full Version : Your Labor Day Weekend Plans
I'll spending my entire weekend grilling. Word's gotten out about my smoker, now friends and family are making dates to grill out here.
Our Labor Day weekend started Thursday evening (wife doesn't work Fridays). Had family over Thursday night for dinner. Smoked a Boston Butt for dinner and made it into pulled pork sandwiches (with homemade BBQ sauce).
Today's a prime rib that I dry rubbed on Thursday (should be really flavorful). Tomorrow is a smoked turkey breast, Sunday is ribs. I figure I'll spend about 24 hours tending the grill this weekend.

I have 3 full slabs of ribs with my homemade rub ready for grilling in a few hours. a few nice beers and i shall find peace tonight :)
I might actually get to fire up the grill tonight or tomorrow. Gonna brew tomorrow too. Mostly its going to be getting stuff moved into the office and out of my daughters new bedroom so we can start "redecorating"
Have a great one all!
Mmmm, all those ribs sounds good too...
...man I wish I could get out for an evening and just have a beer.
Ditto.
therein lies the beauty of having kegged homebrew at home. Good beer on tap after squirt goes to bed!

I won't be doing much. On Monday we are taking the kids to my wife's aunt's camp up on a lake and we are gonna go swimming and boating and all that good stuff.
The guys in my wedding party were going to pitch in and buy us a Keg-o-rator. However, my sister-in-law nixed the idea.
When we found out about that, we were BOTH disappointed.
Just in case you missed the link in the fifty other places I put it ;) here (http://www.treml.org/tandv/kegweb/) is what mine looked like being built... I've got to update it with the drip tray, too.
So, there's hope out there if you put your mind to it! :D
It would be pretty fun to get out on the water again. I think my midlife crisis buy will be a 24ft san juan or j24 sailboat.
Way off topic, once again.
Super weekend all!
Ya know, I've not been on a J24, but have heard soo much good about them. Up on Lake Superior we've had some pretty good blows, nothing like a tropic squall, but still, nothing like freezing your fingers (and a$$) off trying to get the dang jib sheet to coil!
whoahh, I miss sailing.
The worst I've been in was a little blow with ice on the sheets and the jib freezing up a bit...
Then there was the capt'n that thought I was ready for the foredeck during a race, tacking out of a spinnicker(sp?) run, so I was taking down the pole and the guys in the cockpit were greenhorns too and started haulling in the spinnicker before I had it off the pole, wrapped the damn pole right around the mast! Looked like an aluminum flex straw bent at 90deg, man it was ugly. I don't remember exactly how I f'ed it up, but I think I took the pole off the mast before disconnecting the spinnicker. The cap't kept going on about "my pocket book felt that" and it pissed me off so bad, since I told him I wasn't so sure about being up there!
Ahh the joys.
When I was first learning (all during races, its when the folks are looking for crew) they'd tell ya "watch the jib, and when it starts to buckle in, pull up the sheet and let'er fly across" so you watch through the tack, pull up, then hear them screaming "what the F*** are you F***ing doing, get that jib f***ing secure GDit!"
I really liked the races, its fun to see how mild mannered folks act under those conditions. Most of the captains would ream you out up and down during a race then buy you a beer afterward, clap you on the back and thank you for being on their crew!
Yeah, I miss sailing!
Ever drop one of those lever cranker arms into the drink? I was warned often and loudly to make sure they were back in the pocket. Never lost one.
Thats funny, the only time I caught a bit too close to the water, the lifeline left a nice burn along my ribs. After the race thankfully, but I was disconnecting that pole but had my weight on it (a few beers were involved, as usual for post race up here) and I tumbled right into the dang lifelines, lost my hat in the drink. There were two boats within sight and all of them were laughing their tales off.... It was my favorite hat too, but someone fished it out and passed it back.
Had the bruises for weeks!
best advice I heard on a boat...
If you hear "tacking" look, and duck"
If you hear "Jibing" DUCK!
Been too long since I got my feet on deck, though, I'm pretty rusty. My buddy works partime for a charter service, gets to sail his summers away!
Whoa, a thread derail not pertaining to beer!
I suppose the only way you could improve a day of sailing is to enjoy a few beers.
There, thread properly derailed. Carry on. :)
