View Full Version : allergies?
Do your kids have any allergies? Tara has a peanut allergy that we found out the hard way. Thankfully its not so bad that she can't be in the same room, but still.
How about it guys?

My 4 y/o son has an allergy to Amoxicillian. It wasn't a catastrophic reaction, but it was bad enough to merit a trip to the ER. He also has athsma, so anything that complicates his breathing is scary. No food allergies that we currently know of.

Since the first hour my 5 year old son was born, my wife and I have been managing his allergies to ALL dairy, peanut, soy and cats ( of which we have 2). Just recently we had him retested, and the only one he outgrew was the peanut. We have had to learn to substitute with calcium fortified products and find alternatives to make sure he didn't feel left out with playmates and classmates. Also we have to read every box to make sure of the contents. I am amazed at how Drew has handled it :!:

Neither one of our kids seem to have allergies, none that we know of, hopefully it will stay that way. I was allergic to corn and soybean dust as a kid, and my dad still had me in the grain bin with a grain shovel, when I was about 15 I either built up a resistance to it, or grew out of it, either way it never bothered me anymore.
Amm68, one of our friends daughter had a soy, gluten, dairy mix that toned down to only gluten. She said when her daughter has gluten, she acts like a different kid, the reaction occurs in the behavior. I'm glad to hear your son grew out of the peanut, and bummer with the rest, its been very eye opening for us to have to pay attention to whats on the labels. At least the food companies are getting better at making folks aware of whats in the products. Though it does make me chuckle to pick up a jar of peanut butter and look on the back contains peanuts... Ya think?
Its made me a whole lot more nervous leaving Tara with folks too, babysitters and the like. It doesn't take long for her to shut down.
Messing with kids breathing is always scary.

My brother had environmental allergies, its part of the reason he got into marine biology. Can't breath pollen underwater.
I find it kind of interesting that the amount of the food allergies is growing. Twenty years ago, you hardly ever heard of a peanut allergy. Interesting and a little scary, whats in store for our kids kids?

Most of our food is grown with insecticides, fertilizers, and so on, so it is sure to bring on new allergies when they introduce that stuff to our food.

Or is it just that we are more aware of them, and therefore more people are reporting the minor cases? I remember never being able to drink orange juice, because I'd break out in hives. But my mother never took me to the doctor for it - I just didn't drink OJ, until I finally outgrew it. Hard to say. We'll just have to see...
I guess its the peanut allergy that has me thinking they are on the rise. This is a life threatening one, and its more prevalent in the schools. I didn't know a kid in my school (graduated with about 380) that had it, but now it seems like every classroom has one. When we go to the Y there is at least one other kid in the room with a peanut allergy. Seems high for that.
Just thinking out loud. Um... or in print.... :?:

I never realized how serious peanut allergies were until a couple years ago. There was a news story on it, can't remember to much about it, just that I was shocked on how bad it could be.
I used to work with a guy that was severly allergic to tomatoes, couldnt eat anything with tomatoes or he would have a severe reaction to it.
I guess I am allergic to gold in a way, I cant wear any necklaces or I break out in a rash around my neck, but my wedding ring never bothered me, nor did my earing when I used to wear one.
My mom developed the same nasty reaction to fish. She would break out and get wheezy if her french fries were fried in the same oil as the fish fillets.
Freaked us out, 1/2hr after Tara had a little bite of peanutbutter sandwich, we were in the hospital with her barely breating.
Then a few months later she got an RSV infection, sounded almost the same as the allergic reaction, scared the bejeebers out of us.
Val couldn't wear her engagement ring while she was pregnant with Tara because of some irritation. Its wierd how our bodies sometimes react to things!

Luckily none of my five have any. Even with the youngest three's mom being allergic to most antibiotics.
Alot of her relatives and kids have one or two. Hard to keep track of.

Reviving a 2 year old thread.
We just got back from a trip to the allergist and it seems that Will has a "pretty severe" allergy to eggs. It's bad enough that we have to carry around one of those epi-pens just in case. Do any of the newer people here deal with an egg or food allegy or maybe one that has popped up recently?
Leah is also alergic to eggs and milk, though not to that extent. If she eats them we see them again. She empties her stomach and then is fine.
Eggs are incredibly pervasive, ubiquitous even. There are some good sites for egg substitutes in recipes too. (Sorry, I'm not one of the newer people replying though  )
Louis,
Could you repost that link? I'm interested in looking at it but can't find it on that site.
BTW my wife (and daughter) are allergic to bananas. I'd never known anyone with that allergy....nothing serious, just hives...

I guess I'll bump this thread again...every 2 years it seems.
The boy has grown out of his egg allergy! Big relief. He's discovered a healthy addiction to French Toast.
That's great news!
We haven't tested the egg allergy recently, but we know she hasn't out grown her milk allergy. She had an incident a few months ago that confirmed she's still allergic.

Yeah, we actually held off on getting the blood tests...they were just so traumatic for him and he's already got a couple of issues with anxiety, no need to pile on. We just noticed that he had eaten some food with eggs in the list of ingredients and we just ramped it up from there over a period of a couple of months. Talked to his Ped. and she said go for it.
I'm just glad we didn't have to use an Epi-Pen, those things are scary.
I hope Leah outgrows hers, just one less thing to worry about.
I forget if I've asked you yet, but have you ever triggered an expired epi-pen into an orange or something? Man, that thing is powerfull!

Yeah, I did it on your suggestion. Scary stuff. Now I know why they have you pinch up the kids thigh when you give it to them...so it won't hit the bone.

in school they had us discharge a pen in to a chicken leg. It did penetrate the chicken bone so it is possible it could go thru a kids bone. scary stuff those allergies, we are very fortunate in that aspect. hopefully your kids will grow out of it
