Hey, it's not much consolation, but better LAST than LOST.
Sounds like it's time for kinder to see how real men work! (BTW, what time should I come over ? )
Geet 'er done!
Good luck!

Well, it's going to be 20 years until the next one comes, so 1 more day is no big deal....right?

Yes. And try to keep that in mind as the delivery guys carefully guide the unit in a straight line down your hallway by keeping the back side firmly pressed against the wall, giving it that oh-so-sought-after "Darlington stripe" look  .
Remember, in with the good air...

CookTop is IN!
Had to blow out the wall behind it to run the A/C line, but this gives me the chance to run the hood vent to the exterior. More work, but it'll be awesome when done!
No gas leaks! Bought the gas leak test solution Sao advised on. NO bubbles.
No KA-BooM! It's a good thing!
My first crack at removing the old piping - I slipped and gave myself a bloody nose! Not a great way to start a project....Everything went well after that, though. It's definitely a lot of work, but I got the tools and the talent! And a bloody nose.....
We're making bacon tomorrow on our new 5 burner cooktop! Yay!
Uncrated the oven tonight while watching StarGate Sci-Fi! Oh man! Tools, appliances, and natural gas - does it get any better.......?

Bravo! BTW, sunny-side up, 4 strips of bacon (extra crispy, please), pancakes, and is that OJ in the fridge...?
Next week: Iron Jeffus takes on Morimoto.

Jeffus as for it getting any better....maybe a cheering squad in bikinis?
Dave Morimoto might have the advantage... atleast we can understand him sometimes.

OK. So things went good getting the cooktop in.....
Unfortunately, I had to remove the rear wall down to the studs so I could pick-up an electrical feed. While I was at it, I re-ran the line for the hood too.
Yesterday and today was spent re-sheetrocking, hanging a fiberglass backer board, and laying tile.
Here are the before and afters (I hope)....if everybody starts getting "logon to www.straightlinegp.com" it's my fault and I'll pull these right away..

I added the burn marks to give it that "rustic" look..... :D
My Dad's going to help me with the wall oven on Tuesday. Suckers heavy!
The wall oven should go a tad more smoothly.... (*Fingers crossed*)

Thanks!
-3 days of falling over every tool you own....annoying.
-Having all the tools you need for the job.....pretty cool.
-Bloody nose at project onset.....really annoying.
-Taking 2 hours to go to/from Lowe's because of some silly party in Toms River.....er, what can you do?
-Really helpful salesperson at Lowe's....awesome!
-Having the wifey grab kid from school on Friday, then keep out of the way until grandparents took her for a sleep-over Saturday morning, and keeping her til dinner-time tonight (Sunday)......priceless!
-In lieu of the total kitchen renovation, having a new cooktop.....sweet!

Still have to remove the spacers and grout. I never did wall tile before - forgot about the gravity factor - hehe! Oops!
You need to install a piece of wood under the second course to support the weight of the tiles. After that has set, you go back and do the first course (bottom) and use tape to avoid having the tile "slide" down the wall. (That's why there's tape on the tiles!).
Looking forward to doing the grout and wrapping the cooktop area up. It'll be nice to actually cook on it. Since the area was under construction this weekend, we really didn't get a chance to use it! We did make tea - but no bacon!

You can have the tile work... not my thing for sure, but it looks like a good job
jeffus
07-24-2006, 03:18 AM
Tile's easy.... Just tedious, monotonous, mind-nubbing work. That is until you get into trouble cause you're not thinking ahead anymore. I ruined my last specialized edge piece cause I was in worker-drone mode. Dare you to find it! (Well, you couldn't from the pic, it's under the cabinent - no one will ever see it - but I know its there! It'll be there for 10 years and I have to pretend like it's really not there, like it won't bother me, meanwhile I know it's there, taunting me - you rushed your work - nenene!)
Weston
07-24-2006, 03:31 AM
I know what you mean about "knowing it is there" when no one else can find it. I'm the same way
jeffus
07-24-2006, 03:36 AM
Well, this is how I justify my job! Watch the kid, rebuild & renovate the house, do side jobs, etc ......
If we had to hire some-one to do all that work - OMG!
I'm a cheap nanny!

Yep. totally agree with you.
Looks like I have enough "work" to keep me employed for a few more years :o

That looks great Jeff. I'm especially impressed that you tackled the tiling. That stuff scares the crap out of me.

Thanks for the compliments, gents!
Although, I was cooking dinner tonight and noticed that I kinda tiled that hood in place. I don't think it'll come out again without having to rip out some tiles. Whoops!
I guess I should save a handful of tiles, eh? Good thing the hood is only about a year old.

Project's not done yet! There's cleaning up the adhesive, grouting, and some caulking.....
But the song that comes to mind is more like "Bob the Builder". Can we do it? Yes, we can!
Or the WonderPets (Tm Nickelodeon) How did we do it? "Teamwork!";)

Very nice...I bet that thing was a bear to put in. I think my cabinets are the same color as yours. You have good taste.

The oven was a piece of kelp. It popped right into the existing opening.
We started ripping the old one out at 10am and finished cleaning up at 1:30pm with 45 minutes for lunch and a run to the hardware store for a new flexible connector line and some pipe fittings.
Now we just have to pay for it! (We took advantage of the wifey's employee discount - she works for the mfg.)
WillsDad: We painted those cabinets. They used to be really dark brown, filthy, and had "Gothic" pulls in the center of the doors.

We had oak cabinets that we painted as well. Really lightened up the room and made it seem bigger. Anyway, your kitchen looks great.

Now that is a crime if they were decently made cabinets, hopefully not raised panel

I don't think mine are oak. I'd never do that! I'm all for restoring natural beauty in a wood product. You saw my floors!
I'm thinking poplar. Not heavy enough to be oak. Well-made though, that's why we didn't go for the total remodel. Well, that and the astronomical price for new cabinets.
sao95
07-26-2006, 02:33 AM
did you price new cabinets? if so where (custon or ordered from a big box) and how much? just curious....
jeffus
07-26-2006, 02:46 AM
We priced a new kitchen.....for a 10 X 12 space totally redone, they wanted 18 thousand dollars (US). We tried Lowe's, Home Despot, and several independent contractors. That'd be for a total renovation. Gut down to the studs & joists. New floor, cabs, appliances, ceiling, etc.
 we're happy to peck at it on our own terms. The new cooktop and oven cost $1700 roughly. We've fixed it up nice I think and it'll last us a good couple of years until we're ready for something better.
All the appliances are pretty much brand new and we'd incorporate those into the new design, so it's not like we're shoveling dough out the window.

18 grand, wow, does the room need gutted? didn't look that bad from the pics. and does lowes and home depot do that?
jeffus
07-26-2006, 02:58 AM
No. It looks pretty darn good after pecking at it for the last 3 & 1/2 years! I think. :priest:

I sometimes wish I could do things like that, but then I get to thinking:
It's incompetent guys like me who hire skilled guys like you, that makes the economy go. So, I'm just doing my part.
Nice work, Jeffus
