Didn't know where to post this - under DIY or the Pub. But since I worked my ass off today on my lattice project, it's going under DIY.
I've been putting up some lattice board to corner off a portion of my new paver patio, and I used cedar for the whole shebang. 4x4 cedar posts, cedar lattice screens, etc... Anyway, I have a lot of scrap cedar.
My question is, does anyone know if I can use this stuff for grilling, you know, for smoke flavor, grill some salmon on some scrap 2x4s. Now I know to not do this with pressure treated wood, but this is everyday cedar bought from Menards, Lowes, etc.. Is there any reason that "construction" cedar should not be used for grilling? Are there any additives, etc..
Damn, that took about 10 minutes to type, I have a nice buzz-on from sweating my butt off and then having 2 Bud Lites and 2 vodka and orange sodas on no dinner.
This sounds like a question for Louis.

I would be worried about any "accidental" additives if nothing else

i'd lean towards no as there is a huge difference between construction grade and food grade.

I'd lean towards no. I think hickory and cedar are two different flavours. Once of which I don't think would be tasty to the pallet. Cedar is good for aroma and keeps insects away I believe.

if it's kiln dried and not treated, even if they used extractives on it, they are typically things that evaporate quickly, so I doubt it would hurt ya. But I still would probably wait to hear what Louis says ;)

When I built my garden I had many cedar scrap pieces left over too. I don't think I would use them in the same way as the cedar planks you buy in the store, but I have thrown a bunch of chips into the fire while I'm cooking, gives steak and chicken a nice smokey flavor.

hey back to the cedar! ha ha just kidding. I'm just honored I could start such a quality thread.
I finally got my outdoor firepit yesterday - I think I'll just burn up the cedar - since it has a bug repellant quality and the skeeters are starting to come out now. Furthermore, I just stocked up on Apple wood chips at Menards, they were on sale. So I'll just use those instead of my cedar scraps. Just thought it would be cool to combine my handwork with my grillwork.
Now if you dont mind, I'm going to go add some pressure treated wood scraps to the fire we're cooking marshmallows with....

would not recommend using cedar for smoking meat of any kind, soft woods can ruin your smoker and leave a black soot on the meat.
cedar can be used as a Plank to cook meat on

i smoke a lot of meat thru the year and prefer using hickory, mesquite, or various fruit woods depending on the meat.
for added moisture i have found that a pan of water set above the coals/woodchips works better
