Anyone use this to edit home videos? I bought the Sony Vegas Movie Studio and was surprised how easy it is to use. I can insert graphics, music, do voice overs and even download .wav files off the internet (I put in famous lines from movies or sound effects).
I recommend it for anyone looking to burn copies of there home movies and want to have fun in the process.

CaninUs...

Did you get the Vegas Movie Studio + DVD, or Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Platinum Edition?

I got the Movie Studio+DVD that came with the DVD Architect Studio. I am assuming you have one of those, too!

No sir... I use Pinnacle Quick Start 8. I was just researching your software to see if I would enjoy it more than what I currently use. I am going to download the trial version to check it out. I will let you know what I think.

Wow...this is good stuff. I am liking the Sony software. I think that I may purchase this as opposed to Pinnacle. Thanks for the heads up! :supz:

CaninUs,

Do you have a Sony Handycam? I have one and it came with software, but it is a bit confusing. It wasn't the Sony software you speak of though. Maybe I should get that package.

My dad (from Edmonton-we are Oiler fans!) bought me a Panasonic DVD-Ram disc camcorder. The software that came with it was terrible. I went to Best Buy and they had the Sony for about $29.99 after about 6 different rebates. It took me awhile to figure out how to get the Panasonic camera to talk to the Sony software but once I got working it was awesome!
It is real easy to use and it has a "show me how" feature to talk you through what you are trying to do as you do it. I highly recommend it to anyone.

I think the Platinum version comes with a few extra features that I am not sure I would really even know how to use (like having sounds come out of different speakers in a surround sound system, cool yes, but a bit much for me).

Sorry to hear about that Edmonton thing eh. My favorite team growing up was Edmonton. Loved Grant Fuhr, Gretzky, Semenko, Lowe, Simpson, Anderson and so on. Then I was a Toronto fan (and I still am). I am from Aylmer, Ontario. I did go to every playoff game here in Raleigh and saw the Cup hoisted in Game 7. Sat on-ice for the second period too. It was sweet. I live about 4 minutes from the RBC Centre.

For 30 bucks it sounds like a steel. I think I will look for it next time I am at Best Buy. My camcorder does have the surround sound so that would be a cool feature. Not sure how great it would work though.

I grew up an Oilers fan as well! You probably won't believe me when I tell you this but I coached Mike Commodore in baseball when he was in high school! Good to see he is finally getting a chance to play and be an impact player.

As far as the DVD system it also comes with a 1000+ sound effects disc. It has great classics like planes, crashing cars, etc. I like to use the audience laughter sounds everytime you can hear my father-in-laws voice on the tape, he still hasn't caught on that I am making fun of him!

Thats funny. Commodore eh. Thats great. Keep in touch at all? He seems like he would be a great kid to hang with and have a beer. Lots of my friends are friends with Canes players. My friend I play hockey with is neighbours with Coach Laviolette. Love Mike's hair. He cuts it for charity at the end of the season. Very classy. What moved you to California?

I haven't spoken to Mike in almost 10 years. He played for me one summer that was all. I still keep in touch with some of the other kids on the team that are good friends with him. His mom is a principal at a school in his hometown of Fort Saskatchewan and she gave him the idea of shaving his head for charity, big event I guess.
I moved to California to play college baseball and fell in love with it so I got married and stayed! What brought you to the US?

Met my wife, who was then going to school at Syracuse University. Dated for a while and then we decided to get married. It was cheaper and easier for me to move down here than it was for her to move to Canada. So we got a fiance visa and I moved to Syracuse. Then we realized that upstate NY wasn't a bonanza of jobs so we moved to NC. Wife was offered a nice job. Been here 6 years now. Painful thing is...my son and next kid are technically Americans. Ahhhhhh!!!!

Once you have the video imported from a dvd or camcorder. Try windows movie maker, comes free with most MS windows pc's. I just used it to make a dvd for my kid's t-ball team and it worked pretty good and was easy to use.

I agree with Don Dad...MS Movie Maker is pretty good. It does not have have all the fancy bells and whistles as other programs, but most of the time, those things are overkill and complicated.

Thanks Don, I forgot about that one...time to get back to my roots in video editing. ;)

Another vote for Windows Movie Maker!

It's very easy to use. I got Roxio VideoWave 8 (paid for it) and usually just use WMM.

Tried the WMM and it is great for little projects and burning DVD's, but I am more into the Speilberg/Tarantino type movie editing!

Whatever your choice is have fun with your videos! I watched one the other day that I made from when we came home from the hospital. The background music is "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart----I cried like a baby!

For multitrack music I have used Acid by Sonic Foundary. They also have a vegas video program or something like that, but if the interface is like Acid, it would be a good program. Acid allows one video track and unlimited music. I think the vegas allows one stereo audio track and unlimited video (so you can fade in and out of them).
You all might try that. You could grab it off Kazaa or whatever to try it out.

I'm wondering now what there is for linux in the movie editing world...

And it's free to boot. As for me, good ol' iMovie and iDVD on the mac. Yay free.

I use Windows Movie Maker (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx) for small videos (5-15 minutes) that I put on my website and Sonic MyDVD (http://www.sonic.com/products/consumer/mydvd/default.aspx) to make full DVD's.

I also bought the Adobe Video Bundle (http://www.adobe.com/products/bundles/video_bundle.html) which includes Adobe Encore (http://www.adobe.com/products/encore/) because I want to get fancier with it than I have in the past (and because I was taking a couple of classes last year I could get it at the student price which is about a quarter of the norm) but I haven't really gotten a chance to play with it yet.
