View Full Version : Thermometers
What do you guys use for thermometers when your kids are sick? We had a $3 digital one that takes a minute for a reading. Thats WAY too long... especially if you are trying to get an accurate reading, ya know?
We bought a braun thermoscan irt3020 that sticks in the ear and takes a temp in a second, any one use it? Heard of it? We bought and are now searching for reviews. Everything in order, right?
Yeah, its got a baby on the front so we figured its ok for our squirt. It gives reading differing by 2 degrees though, thats a pretty crappy margin of error for supposed "professional accuracy"
I'm going to derail my own thread... I remember reading that the 98.6degF isn't actually the average, but a slight miscalculation from C.
Sound familiar, or am I just looney tonight?
we use the 'Thermoscan' too...I like the speed...
If the kid hit 37.5'C(99.5'F)...we'd head for the local doc.
Louis, I thought those little, plastic cups were to put ketchup in at the bbq...

I too have found that most thermometers you buy are pretty inaccurate in practice. We mainly use ours to detect a change in temperature, not an absolute.
After a winter spent caring for two kids who kept getting fevers, my sister would just go by their behaviour. She could tell when they got too lethargic, and the fever came back. Usually, when they started doing what they were told, she'd break out the children's tylenol!
My wife is a computer person, who likes to have things very quantifiable. Yes, I can tell squirt has a fever, but is it 101.5 or 101.9, its all very important you see.
(man, I'm in trouble if she reads this  )

I think behavoir is a very big part of it, as all people have different levels that might affect them differently. My youngest can get some WHOPPERS of fevers and be as happy as a clam. When he would first get them they would get up to 103+, even 104. We rushed him to ER, but they determined he was just fine, and to just watch his behavoir. They also said something interesting, in that tylenol is used to often to treat fevers and sometimes it's best just to let the fever do it's job and correct itself. Anyway I have found a lukewarm bath works a lot better.
Now, my oldest can't take fevers in the least. He can barely get a fever and he gets all delirious and very strange behavoir like he is tripping on acid. He gave us quite a scare once. He would keep laughing, but his eyes were hazy and he was unaware of us being there. Turns out, he had had a reaction to one of his booster shots, which is very rare I guess. Some people pay big bucks to get that effect from drugs :P

Where's Waldo? Oh there he is....
Yup, fever is the bodies way of quality control. Most virus's and bacteria don't do well in temps over 100, thats why the body does that. Its hard explaining that to a mom who is seeing her kid burn up of fever though  its also hard being the dad trying to explain it!
