I'm thinking of getting a tv tuning/capture card. Haven't ever bought one before and looking around I see alot of brands I've never used before. It needs to have video in/aduio in, for analog as well. I saw a few firewire devices but they get pricey and I heard usb isn't the best. Any advice and or suggestions appreciated....

I have a huppague (sp?) pvr150 for tv its a hardware based encoder. Basically it takes the analog tv signal and converst it into mpeg2 (same as dvd) on the card hardware so less cpu usage. You can also capture svideo or component from other devices (ie camcorder with svideo out or a dish network receiver box)

Hey what are you going to use it for? So i can possibly point you in the right direction.

I use a cheap firewire card ($15.oo) to transferr video from my minidv camcorder dv out port. It grabs sound and video then you can use a softwere based encoder to change that to dvd format. Make sure you have a decent sized hard drive because mini dv format is huge.

I have a hauppauge 350 pvr. Have plans on using it on my home network with gbpvr, just have to tweak it.

I have a ati 9000 (I think) it's about 3 years old but it works great. It hase cable in connection and a doohicky that you can connect a camcoder, dvd player, etc... thru s video or composite cables.

It also has a great program that gets tv listings and you can record with it, better that the hauppauge in my opinion as it was so easy to install and just click update and you have the latest listings.

Don-dad I am using gbpvr as well after several failed attempts at mythtv. I agree great program only wished you could seperate the front end from back end.

Sorry sao I will quit hijacking your thread:rolleyes:

I picked up a ati radeon 9200 awhile back for a comp I never got around to building, I was looking at it today and it has a rca type jack out and s-video out, wasn't sure if I could use it as an in to capture though  I'm guessing not, but then I read that it was possible on some cards that said out. It doesn't have audio though, I need video and audio for an old vhs type camcorder to capture and transfer to dvd... I sawe a few happauge (sp?) had never heard of them, seems like you guys have had luck with yours?

I was going to use the same setup, but i think I will opt for a magnavox dvd recorder from Sam's Club...this one will record in all formats and it's only $98....an I have a TON of vhs-c video to transfer...

tthat's not a bad idea, the only downside I can see is you can't edit it

Yeah, I didn't check the reviews ...I guess you usually get what you pay for.

I was thinking the same thing, but after it is on a disc, say a rw disc so you could re-use it until you get the completed transfer, couldn't you use something like Nero to edit it? This is all pretty new to me, as you can tell....
