OK I used some of that old fashioned film stuff and had the pictures developed at the grocery store. It's only $2 for the CD only.

This is the office I finished last year. The room was a bedroom when we bought the house. William’s playroom is just outside the office so it’s pretty handy.

This is the new family room I’m finishing now. It’s looking a little like a legion hall at the moment. I ripped out and rebuilt about 70% of the room so there is still a little funk left.

French pocket doors are going into that big opening on the left Saturday. They will separate the playroom from the family room.

The fireplace, aka the brick sh*t house. 12 foot 6 wide 7 foot 8 high. The first owner of the house was an Italian brick layer. I’m leaving it for now. Next year some of the brick will get covered with custom wood work, air-tight glass doors will be installed on the firebox and the hearth will be redone in granite. It’s already pre-wired above to accommodate a 50” flat screen TV and the room is wired for 7.1 surround sound.

Laundry room on the right and storage room center. That closet like area by the stairs is where the media cabinets will eventually be installed. PVC conduit runs from the elctrical boxes throughout the room for the media wiring.

Nice work. Looks like you get a lot of work done, regardless of Home Depot delivery!

Looks great Cecil. I have ?'s though. What kind of floor was it that you put in? Snap together, slip together, real wood or faux wood, nailed or free floating? Did you have to put a sub floor in? Are there drains under the wood floor for any possible flooding? I need to do the same thing in my basement and have been trying to decide how to go about it. Thanks Cecil and once again it looks beautiful.

Wow, that’s a lot of questions.

The product is a floating laminate floor made from ‘wood products’. The panels are roughly 7x48 and snap together. There’s a real learning curve in how they go together. It does a good job of dulling your saw blades too.

An expansion gap has to be left between the edge of the floor and the wall; the larger the room the larger the gap that’s needed. Since our family room is 22 feet at the widest I had to leave a 3/4'’ expansion gap. I’ll be using a 3/4” wide baseboard with a 1/2” quarter round against it to cover the gap.

There is an underlay. It’s specifically made for going over concrete. We chose the premium underlay; it has a bit of an R-value, a built in vapour barrier and is mold resistant.

When I finished our office last year I tried the Dry-Core sub floor tiles under the laminate floor. I was unimpressed. I really don’t think it’s worth the money.

There are no drains in the finished region of the basement. I have a few in the laundry and mechanical rooms. If I put a finished floor over a floor drain I have to leave the drain accessible. Those pesky building codes.

There is always a possibility of flooding in the basement so we chose the cheapest floor we could find. Floor and underlay was $1.40/sf. I’m not too worried about ground water, foundation seepage or sewer backup. Our neighbourhood is on the top of hill and there’s no history of flooding with our house or any of our neighbours. Still that’s no guarantee it will never happen; besides there is always possibility of a plumbing malfunction inside the house.

I hope this helps some.

I have not installed laminates in a while. Your floors look good :) I did this website about 4 years ago, have not touched it since, so the images are broken, http://www.ezresearch.com/homeauto/laminate.html

I really did use the internet twice to buy my floors and after shopping around all over, the deals even with shipping can't be touched. Not sure what's available in Canada though.

The stuff at Home Depot in pretty crappy till you start paying for the higher end stuff. But that same flooring can be had online much cheaper. If I ever install laminates again, I'd probably use fastfloors again.

Thanks Cecil that helps allot. I am still in the process of putting everything on paper and just planning. I was undecided on what kind of floor to put in and your post helps me by giving more info. I hadn't thought about it but we are up on a hill as well and ground water is the only worry I have and even then only a little. Thanks again.

try not to be too much of a smart ass to new people asking a genuine question, we don't want them to think we are all like you ;)
