I have one of the typical new construction 21 * 20 garages. I want to build a shelving system along the rear wall. It will be approximately 14 feet wide and 14 feet tall. Maybe about 2.5 feet deep. If anyone has done this or knows a good way to make a solid shelf I would appreciate the help. I have never build anything like this before. Need to get the stuff out of the middle of the garage and stored properly. Can't even fit a moped in there right now.
Thanks for your advice,
Andrew

I used a utility shelf system from Ikea in our garage and in our basement storage room. It’s fairly strong, easy to assemble and cheaper than building anything custom.
GORM storage system (http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?cattype=sub&topcategoryId=16198&categoryId=15893&parentCats=16198*16201&storeId=12&catalogId=10103&langId=-1)

plywood with back braces to screw to the wall would work best, basically the same way you would build cabinets, and you could put doors on as well.
I just went the Rubbermaid route and bought a bunch of their shelving systems. The cost was about the same as doing it with wood.
I installed these in my garage. All you need to do is cut some 2X4s and screw them together. I bought them through amazon, but I think Lowes sells them. They hold a lot of weight and are infinitely configurable.

Note: THIS IS NOT MY GARAGE.

That does look nice Van, nice and easy.
I got a bunch of old kitchen cabinets at our Habitat for Humanity Restore this summer. I see them in the paper a lot too, also heard the idea of asking contractors if they're doing any kitchen upgrades. Quick screw to the wall. For $360, I got 23 feet of them, made some shelves for the rest of the wall. Only problem is they're nicer than the ones in our kitchen. Someday, dear, I will...

Great ideas. Thanks. That would be slick having kitchen cupboards in the garage in some sections. I want to do some sort of bulk storage. Mainly to put large plastic bins on. Then I can label them and get them out of the way. I will check Lowes/HD to see if they have that system for joining 2x4 too. It would sure be strong.

Hey Hockeyfan...
This is what I got for our garage as storage - http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=84624-230-3624-5BK&lpage=none
I think they went up in price though as I'm pretty sure I paid less than $50 per shelf.

Weston,
I ended up going in your direction. I have a set of these at the momment (or very similar) and I use them as work benches. I am going to try to merge 3 together to get the height I want and then screw them into the wall into a 2*4 for support. I figured for the money it would be worth it as far as time and effort and end product. Plus I can take these with me when I move. Thanks for everyone's help. Much appreciated.

If you'll clean it out occasionally, you can share mine, mate.
