Hey there everyone, I'm back. Miss me?

My wife and I decided to try a little vacation with out 4-month old. And what a trip that was. Oy. It had been forever since we went anywhere, and we wanted to do something while he was still relatively portable ("portable", right -- his stuff filled the car!). Well, we were partially successful.

We decided to spend a couple days by the ocean, in a small town of Ogunquit in the south of Maine (hi Rem!). The town is filled with ocean-side walks and nice little restaurants, so we figured it'd be a good casual trip. Surprisingly, Jack was great during the 5.5 hour ride up -- he slept the whole way except when we stopped to all eat. Perfect! And the first day was a lot of fun. We strapped him in his new big-boy front-facing stroller, and walked along the ocean, had some lobster and scallops, and an overal nice day.

The problem was we underestimated how stressful sharing the hotel room could be. The first two nights, he was up every hour or two. Not screaming, but up, and waking us up. Since we were only two feet away, we heard every little sound, so we did not get much sleep. Then, during his evening witching hours, he'd just scream (he's starting to teethe... ah, the joy) and we'd get even more stressed worrying that he'd annoy all the neighbors, and the seals, and the moose. Being in such close quarters with a crying baby rally gets to you! Then, every time we tried to eat, he'd start fussing and complaining. We realized that we usually love to spend our vacations eating, but not anymore.

So on the second morning, when he melted down yet again, we decided to pack it in a day early and head home. We felt like losers a bit, letting the stress get to us. But on the way home I called my mother, and she laughed -- they had done the same thing when we were kids, but they never even made it to the destination. They got half-way there and turned around! So I guess we aren't losers after all.

The irony of course was that he again was an angel on the drive back -- even when we got stuck in two hour-long jams. And then when we got home, he slept throught the night for the first time in a long time.

I think the next time we plan a vacation, we'll have some new criteria. First, find a place that is only 1 or 2 hours away (just to make it easier). Then find a place where we can get a condo or rent a small house, so that we have some breathing room, and he can get his own room. Also, a place with a kitchen so that we don't have to go out for every meal.

What do you guys do for vacations?

We are fortunate, my in-laws have a house at the Jersey shore. It is about a 2-3 hour drive, sometimes more depending on the traffic, which is just about right. We took Evan down when he was about 4 months and had to stop a couple of times to console him, but the last trip down for labor day he was very good. Know what you mean about his stuff filling the car though!
My x and I used to go camping alot and my first son would be crammed into his car seat surrounded by all his stuff and tons of camping gear. Those trips were fun, but now I only get to see him about twice a year and the trips are on airplanes. The bad news is...he is more trouble at age 21 then he ever was! Ah, the joys of parenting!

Louis, sounds great. Maybe one of these days we'll make it down there. Four years ago (pre-baby, pre-wedding) we made a trip to Africa, and spent most of our time watching the wildlife... it was a great avdenture. Can't wait to bring Jackson on such a trip.

2nd Time, where on the Jersey Shore do you go? Since we live in northern NJ, I think we'll try to find a place there where we can rent a place for a week (maybe share a bigger place with family).

We've been pretty lucky travelling with the squirt. The rooms that we've gotten have been conducive to blocking her view of us, even if she stands up and complains. Line of sight really helps. We also borrow this air purifier thing that puts out white noise, and that helps too. Keeps her from hearing us and vice versa. The only other travelling we have done is to family, and Val's folks have a room set up for her seperate from ours. Both her brothers live in the area of their folks. Cool thing, once the second one arrives, they've got a toddler bed in one room, and a crib in the other, so they'll both get their own rooms when visiting gramma and grampa. Kind of the same setup with my folks.

Our trip last fall to Maine and MD was interesting, but we mananged succesfully. Not one of them that you could turn around! :)

My in-laws house is near Seaside Heights. There is usually houses for rent there during the summer months. They are some really good areas there for families and we always have a good time down there. Let me know if you want me to find out more, I can ask my FIL and email you info.

I never knew how lovely multiple rooms were until we went to Buffalo NY for my brothers wedding. I made the plane tickets prior to the birth and stupidly thought if we're back for a wedding might as well stay for a whole week. with a 1 and a half month old - bad bad bad idea.

many many nights of confined spaces, a screaming newborn, wedding, rehersal dinners, family members ohhing and ahhing, endless commuting, and my mom parading the little tyke around, and we were completely luny. thankfully some friends who live out in the country stepped in, took us to their place, and stopped us from going postal.

we have been very careful about trips since then. going only to Portland, OR and Idaho to stay with family in homes more conducive to a 5 month old. luckily we live in the place I'd vacation to anyways so I'm not missing out much.

That is definate plus, for sure. When we leave for the weekend, its great having little traffic going with us, but seeing it near bumper to bumper heading towards town!

We joined the Disney vacation club about three years ago, it's like a time share except no time/day restrictions. It uses a point system, you buy points and every room at the disney resorts are assigned a point value for every night(varies with season/day). So we try to go there at least once a year. You can find good deals on tickets online, well ok, my wife can find tickets online, it's kind of her hobby to plan our disney trips.
Last year we went 3 times, once when the baby was 10 days old. Have I mentioned my wife really likes Disney/Orlando?
We usually go off peak season and don't always go to the parks(sheesh, who could afford that? Financially or mentally?) Anyway, we always have a blast and we have a system for the road trips which makes it tolerable and sometimes fun.
