Anyone here have experience with electronic circuit design? I'd like to put together a simple outdoor motion detector with a 50' detection range with flashing led bars as the warning signal the unit is to be solar charged battery operated and fits in a 18" x 3" x 1" box.

I can hook you up with 3 electrical engineers iffin you're interested.

you can buy a sensor cheaper than you can make one I think, then just take the casing off it, not sure on the range though, and you should also be able to find solar stuff at any farm supply store, I'm sure there's a way to fit one to the other, I'm not sure what you're talking about with the flashing led bars though

Just two rows of LED's. But the criteria for selection would be dependant on battery consumption and how well they can be seen from 50 ft.

of course my next question is, why? what's the application for this? I know I'm prying, but you have my curiousity goin...

Can't help you build it, but SmartHome (http://www.smarthome.com/prodindex.asp?catid=1316) has a bunch of motion dectectors you might be able to hack. We got the Reporter (http://www.smarthome.com/7317.html) system which isn't solar powered, but does allow you to have the motion sensor trigger control things other than the built-in buzzer.
