So I was all excited about putting paypal buttons on my site. It looks like if I want people to be able to configure a laptop, I'm going to have to actually make a a bunch of products (for paypal's sake) with every conceivable set of options for a given model. This is a few thousand more things than I wanted to do. I don't want to limit choices and just have a few preconfigured laptops. What other options are there?

That's one of the downsides to the buttons. It would probably be easier to setup a cart system that has all of the modifiers in it and then passes the user to PayPal when they are done checking out. This is one option on my site (http://www.zymurguy.com).

It is running Joomla/VirtueMart, and VM allows you to define a base product and then add additional options and prices. I'll be honest and say I am migrating to another cart package now, but I don't think for any reasons that would hold you back.

PS - not meaning to pimp my site. Just referencing it as an example as I was in the same boat for a few of the items I carry.

I used mals-e.com for a siet years ago, easy to set up and you can integrate paypal. It's free and the paid version is really cheap for a few added features. (which I cannot remember what those features are at the moment)
