Wooohoooo! Thanks Quirkman!

BIG TEN BABY! I know, I know, some down years recently, but it's still BIG TEN FOOTBALL! I anticipate a much better showdown between Michigan and OSU this year.

My favorite match-up in any sport, of any 2 teams of all time??? NOTRE DAME VS. MICHIGAN. You have to go in the deep-south (FU/FSU/Miami) to find a rivalry this good!

Bring on the SATURDAY FOOTBALL! Sorry wifey, see ya Sunday!!

QJ

Texas vs. OU! One of the biggest rivalries ever! Of course, there are a lot of them in college ball.

I like the Michigan vs. OSU one, too.

Cubfan

Yep, that's another point. Not one region of the country owns college football. Every area has their own style, rivalries, etc..

Ok, between this football and grilling talk, I gotta get outside and start our day!!

Geaux Tigers!!! Big LSU fan.

Notre Dame fan by default. My wife is a Domer. You can not even imagine the intensity level she brings to Football Saturdays as we call them around here.

Really sucked around here last year at Sugar Bowl time. She was so pissed she went to bed at half time. I had to cheer quietly, alone in the living room.
LSU 41--Notre Dame 14.

No wonder you're a SAHD. Your wife went to ND!!!

Yeah the sugar bowl sucked. huge disappointment. I went to the ND/Purdue game last year (or was it the year before that?) with a couple-friends. He went to ND his wife went to Purude. ND won easily but it was fun for them.

I can't begin to tell you how much fun the Texas/OU game is here in Tulsa, Oklahoma! Being Texas fans, behind enemy lines. We always have a UT themed party game day, even invite a few of OU faith-full! University of Texas flag goes up Friday morning and stays till Sunday night. If Texas wins I leave it up for a least a week. LOL! The neighbor's get into too! Putting up OU sticker, yard flags and such. All in good spirits! Man I can't wait! Our last year in Oklahoma gotta make this years party really good!

I used to think the Oregon/Oregon State rivalry was intense, which it is, but then I moved to Florida and live in the middle of the Florida/Florida State/Miami rivalry. Personally, I don't care about any of them, but the wife is a Miami alum. I had fun with that last year! I especially loved reminding her that they played a bowl game in Boise, and were lucky to get that!

Trust me--it's a blessing and a curse!

We went to ND/Stanford last year. Man, something about being on the ND campus on game day. It's hard not to be a fan after the experience. This year we're gonna see ND/Michigan State for my wife's birthday.

I've never really gotten into college football much. I want to, but the best rivalries aren't in the northeast, and it's tough to root for Syracuse. Plus, there's just sooooo many teams -- it's overwhelming.

I guess if I root for anyone these days, it's Boise St. How can you go wrong with blue turf?

On rare occasions there will be a Duck's game on TV in my area. I always watch their bowl games, even if I have to stay up late. What really gets me is trying to watch a Blazers game. It's usually past my bedtime before the game even starts.

I grew up rooting for Notre Dame (with an Irish Catholic dad, I had no choice). I'll always have a rooting interest there.

Here in the NE, its the Big East. I know, call us a basketball conference. We lack the tradition of the major football conferences. But with 3 teams in the top 16, and 4 legit Heisman candidates, we should see some good football this fall.
It's been interesting watching UCONN build a I-A program. We've been competitive at times. That's all we can hope for at this point.

Wow... just saw the highlights of the game. What a finish - now that's exciting!

Yeah, that preseason top 25 included some real shockers. And last year, the championship game included cinderella Florida facing off against the little school, Ohio State. Who on earth could've predicted that? Heck, in the preseason they were ranked 7th and, well, 1st.

Enjoy your own thread. ;)

Hhmmm, how do those words taste???? NCAA football baby! Today's stunner is what it's all about. Even though one of my top teams lost - I LOVE IT!

My wife went to App State. We were following the game via updates on the radio in the car today. She got excited even though she cares nothing about football. What an amazing win.

I was thinking earlier this week when I heard some local people on the radio talking about how the game would be a blow-out that I hoped Michigan overlooked them the same way. There was an article in the paper with Michigan Students laughing about the game. "Who is that?" "How do you pronounce it?" "haha". Bet they aren't laughing now. Appalachian was Division I-AA champions for the last two years.

The ESPN guys kept saying it was the biggest upset ever. I can't think of a bigger one, but I'm not well versed in college football lore either.

A fantastic day for App State Alums! I have no pity for the Michigan fans.

<shurg> I liken it to allowing all of the minor league baseball teams to play one another at all levels, including the MLB teams. Then there would be about the same number that play in college football. And as in college football, a A-ball team will sometimes beat an MLB team. And that'll be that.

Big win last night for UCONN. (What do you mean you didn't watch.) Louisville did start the year in the top 10, though they have taken a dive. South FL next week becomes a big opportunity.

For those who did see it, what's your take on the (not) fair-catch. He didn't break the letter of the law, but certainly the intent. Cheating or gamesmanship? For the record, I didn't like it, and would suggest he not try it again. We'll take the result, though.

I didn't see it, but I was at a kid's birthday party today and it was the talk of the party. Since I live in Louisville, the talk wasn't very kind. ;)

The understanding here was that even one wave of a hand in the air requires a stoppage of the ball, so it was thought that the official messed up. I'm not sure, as I don't know the rule. Either way, it sets a bit of a dangerous precedent since the fair catch rule is designed to protect the receiver, and if this trick became common, that protection would be diminished.

Boston College went down!!! Worst case scenario puts Oregon 3rd in the BCS, though they might leapfrog LSU to number 2. I'd love to see Ohio State and Oregon in the National Championship. Heisman final 4 announced. Does anybody really stand out this year? There is no 'best player on the best team' candidate.
Tebow's numbers are impressive, with 51 tds (29 passing, 22 rushing), and his teams leading rusher. But his 3100 passing yards were not even top 20, and Fla was 9-3.
McFadden's #'s aren't even the best of BCS conference backs. Rice from Rutgers had better totals. But his big finish against LSU could help.

Looks like Tebow gets it

North Country Dad
12-06-2007, 03:26 AM
This has been such a crazy year. I've never been a huge fan of college ball, but the BCS mess is silly. There are too many teams to follow, no standards in terms of scheduling, and no playoff system. How can you crown a national champion when some conferences have a championship game and some don't? It would be like the AFC South playing by different rules than the AFC North. It doesn't make any sense. I still don't even understand the bowl game thing. Ugh.

That said, it's exciting to watch on TV. I'd love to attend a big college game someday. It's sad, actually, because there's so much passion in the game -- but the system itself is wacky, outdated, and completely unfair. Also, there is a smarminess in the top tier programs that annoys me -- I'm so sick of hearing about Ohio St, USC, and one of the zillion Florida teams. I'll watch the bowl games, but I still much prefer my football on Sundays (except when Boise St. plays at home -- love the blue turf!!!)

As for the Heisman, Tebow is the strongest candidate, especially in terms of what he did both through the air and on the ground. Incredible.

Cubfan
12-06-2007, 03:46 AM
but I still much prefer my football on Sundays

haha, I know I'm in the minority here but give me football on SATURDAY!! You can't beat the rivalries and like you said, the passion involved.

But dont ask me to explain the whole BCS thing, because I can't. It's the tradition that's involved with all these bowl games and the money involved in the sponsorship that will never allow a playoff system to happen. So you can love the sport for the tradition, but hate it for it's stubbornness. It's clearly flawed, but I can live with it because it's so friggin exciting and traditional.

I dont know why I like NCAA better than the NFL. Just seems more exciting to me. The NFL seems kinda monotonous and predictable - the same teams, the same players.... it's a half-dozen years before anything changes in that league.

Another reason I've kind of lost interest in the NFL is because I watch so much football on Saturdays, that I'd rather spend time with my family than watching the same predictability every Sunday.

This topic reminds me of an email conversation I had with my old college roommate a little while back. He and I could watch and talk NCAA football forever. Anyway, he says it pretty well here. I've edited it to remove any personal stuff...

I do think college is so much better than pro, it isn't even close.
I think the pros play for money and egos. I think college kids play
with heart. A lot of them know that last game their senior year is the
last time they will strap em up and they play that way. Add in
tradition, bands, alumni and cheerleaders and it's all good. The Chop
at FSU, the Illini student section, Texas A&M's 12th man, Hook em Horns,
Hail to the Victors, Fight On, Touchdown Jesus, Boomer Schooner, UGA the
Bulldog, Bevo, The Little Brown Jug, The Biggest Cocktail Party on
Earth, The Victory Bell, Wide Right, I could go on and on. All those
colleges and their rabid fans, you don't see that in the pros.

silviomossa
12-06-2007, 04:09 AM
The flaw in the BCS is it's mere purpose for existence -- to create a national champion. That simply isn't possible when there are 250ish teams playing an 11 game schedule, and expect to come to a clear consensus as to who the championship teams should be, or even who the playoff teams should be. As a result, you get a hot and heavy pursuit in being #1 that leads to all sorts of misguided actions, such as this one:

http://www.hbo.com/realsports/stories/2007/episode.128.s2.html

IMO, the old bowl system was much better.

12-13-2007, 01:24 AM
This is an interesting little 'game' that ESPN set up in order to see who would win in a 16-team playoff. I think 8 teams would be plenty, but this is still interesting. Hey, it gives us something to do during the much too long build-up to the bowl games...

The BCS game just sort of fell into their lap. This year, Tressel coached 1 1/2 quarters of football, last year it was about 1/2 quarter. Maybe next year, he can coach the entire game? ;)

Another reason I've kind of lost interest in the NFL is because I watch so much football on Saturdays, that I'd rather spend time with my family than watching the same predictability every Sunday.

Meh, I see my family enough from February - August.

I think the pros play for money and egos. I think college kids play
with heart.

Yea, no money or egos involved in college ball! Riiiiiiiiight. Many of the players play for possible MILLIONS in the NFL and future sponsorships. Most have their $50,000+ college education PAID for. And the coaches all do it for MONEY and EGO.

Oh, I fully expect to see Ohio State overrated again next year. I wouldn't be surprised to see them get waxed by another SEC team either. :-\"

I don't know about you all, but I've been much more disinterested this year in the Bowl season than before. The BCS has ruined what interest I had. It's such a farce. If they'd just make it simple and fair like the NFL, then I'll get into it again. For now, whatever... I'm so sick of all the talk about the system and not the games or teams or players and their stories.

I agree, NCD. The bowl games were pretty lame this year. Only game I found interesting was the Florida/Michigan game. (and the right team won!)

On the flip side, this is one of the rare years that I personally find the NFL post-season to be interesting. Between the Pats, Pack, and Cowboys, there is finally some potential for powerhouse match-ups.
