View Full Version : Double stroller
Hey guys, we've got them two kids now, one infant and one toddler (2 years is still toddler?)
Any of you use those double stollers? Are they worth it? Would you recommend one over another?
I'm having reservations about spending the money on one. What do you all think?

We have two different double strollers. We have a big heavy side by side that we bought used. We mostly used it to walk around the neighborhood. We bought a anumberella style double stroller at Toys R Us. We have gotten lots of use out od it. It is light weight and takes up much less space in the car.
The only down side to the side by side style of these stollers is that they are hard to sqeeze between the racks at department stores or the stacks at the library. We have never owned the front to back style.
hwt, thanks for the input.
Guys? C'mon, enough of you have more than one kid. Give me some insight please.
hmph... borderline dissapointing :(

I guess the big question for me on the double stroller is...what kind of vehicle do you have? We have problems enough with the single stroller fitting it in the trunk of the civic..and when we take my truck, I have to strap it down in the back and hope it doesnt rain
As far as cost..i don't think i would want to spend the money on a new one, especially if your oldest will be able to walk on her own soon.
Can you get away with using the stroller for her and a snuggli for the infant?
Sorry if i'm not much help T...just trying to think what i would do

We never had to use one but I'm with J monkey, I've seen a few parents struggle with them at the stores for example. I guess that if I was going to get one I'll go with the slimmer one seat behind the other rather than next to each other.
Sorry I wish I could tell you more...
I'll be honest, I'm not too keen on the contraption anyway, but wifey wants one. Tara is 2, walking, running all the other things 2's do, I just don't see how much she'd sit in the thing anyway. Then I'd be stuck lugging this six foot contraption through whereever and chasing her.
Car space isn't really an issue, we've got a minivan. Wifes afraid of how to get Tara in safely to stores and stuff when in the parking lot, but I just have her put her hands on the van until i'm ready to take her hand and push the other stroller.
I think I've made up my mind. Now I just have to convince Val. Her biggest argument for it is when she has both the kids out... but it hasn't even happened yet!
Just have to make sure Tara's wearing comfortable shoes and she should be fine. Do all of us good to keep everyone used to walking.
anyway, thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.

I've seen a lot of people around using a Maclaren double stroller. It doesn't look like its a huge monster. Its side by side, and I believe it is based off of the Triumph chasis (shouldn't strollers be compared to cars?). I don't know too much about it other than it seems to be the double stroller of choice at the park we go to.

take a look at the Bob duallie stroller. We have the single and it is amazing. Shocks, reclining seats, cantilever brake with bicycle style handle, waterproof canopy, excellent wheels, five point harness. heck if they put in airbags and a radio I'd have to register it at the DMV. Pricey though, but worth it. Oh and the little one probably won't fit into it for a little while. Which might be a problem with other duallie strollers and the mixed ages of your kids - don't know.
One other option I know about is the Chariot system. Came out after I bought the Bob. Pretty cool system. With purchased adaption kits it can go from a stroller to a bike trailer, hiking stroller, or skiing trailer. Usually not much for transformer multi-use gadgets, but I've heard good things about these. Also pricey. REI.com has them.
Have you thought about doing a backpack with your older kid while pushing your single stroller for the baby. That's what I did when walking with our baby and my daycare kid and it worked fine. Might be easier than getting in and out of doors with a duallie - they are kinda wide loads. Maybe cheaper too.
I am hoping the baby will be good at being self-propelled by the time we get crazy enough to have #2.

I've got two girls, a 3yr old and 1 1/2 year old, and we use the double stroller all the time. I hadn't planned on purchasing one, it was given to us as a gift. It is the front to back style with theatre style seating so whoever is in back still has a clear view forward. The other nice thing is our infant car seat locks into the rear seat so when the baby was smaller we didn't have to take her out of the car seat to put her in the stroller. The only problem is it doesn't fit in my car trunk. I have to put it in the front passanger seat, so I can only use it when I'm out with the kids by myself or at home. That being said, I'd still say it's worth the investment of upgrading to the two seater. Just make sure it fits in your car.

Does your 3yr old like to sit in it for very long?
Your age spread is about the same as mine, good to know you are still using it though.
I'm just having a hard time thinking Tara is going to sit in it for very long. hmmm
more to think,
Thanks for your input Tom

My 3yr old will ride for a long time (30 minutes or more). She is a very patient child though. If she wants to get out and walk that's okay with me, but atleast I have a seat for her when she decides she wants to ride. I used a single stroller for the little one for a few months before we had the double stroller. It seemed that my 3yr old always wanted to get in with the baby. I'd often end up carrying the baby with 3yr old in stroller just to keep the peace.
Last summer we purchased one of those two seater bike trailers. It has a flip down wheel so that when you disconnect it from the bike you can use it as a stroller. Although I mostly use it as a bike trailer it also works pretty well as a stroller for trips around the neighborhood. Seems like when they are sitting side by side though someone always ends up crying.

We have a double stroller that we have used with various ages at different times. It's a longer version of a typical stroller. I would have to check the brand if you want to know. I tossed it in the garage after my daughter moved out with my granddaughter and it has gotten buried as I'm working on cleaning the garage out. It's not too bad, but can be hard to steer if the kids are starting to get heavy. We used it at the Disney parks (4 parks in 5 days) last March with 2 three year olds and it was pretty good. At several points I had too sleeping 3 year olds and still made my way around the park without much problem. In my thinking, if it passed the Disney test it should work in most situations. Space wise it's not too much bigger than the regular stroller once you fold it down. The worst problem I have seen is stopping it when someone suddenly walks in front of you or stops right in front of you. It can also be hard getting around corners when you can't see or making your way around a packed store. All in all, though, I would recommend getting one.
