Without installing an additional card, can I run a slave drive off the same ide cable as the dvd drive? While researching I read more than once that the dvd/cd driver can run alot slower if a hard drive is connected to the same cable.
thanks!

It should work fine. I would make the Hard drive the master and the DVD/CD drive the slave. It might be a little slower with both drives on the same IDE channel.

you can do it without many problems, if the loss of speed becomes a problem you might want to look into a external USB case for the drive, they are pretty cheap and than you have a portable drive to boot.

My thoughts too...

I was trying to avoid the external I already have 3 of them :) I had 2 sata connections but could not get the freakin sata drive to work. So I put it in an external case. I have an extra 40 gig drive just collecting dust and figured I throw it in the PC I'm resurrecting into a file server/pvr/webserver
