View Full Version : God's cruel trick on me

There is a beep/squeak sound in the unfinished, mostly exposed-stone/brick basement. At first I thought the smoke detector battery was low, but our only one is upstairs. Sometimes it comes every minute or two, sometimes it will stop for hours then restart. When I go down to listen for it, the structure of the basement (and all of the crap around) makes it difficult to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Sometimes I'll hear it when I go down and I still can't find it. Other times, it will stop altogether. Hence, God's cruel trick. It's been going on for <twitch> almost a week.
Any guesses? Sometimes I wonder if it's the furnace, since it doesn't run constantly and I don't know why it would beep. Other times, I wonder if there is some remote device down there that I can't find. And other times, especially since it's sub-freezing and we are stuck inside all day, I wonder if a chip has been planted in my head, being manipulated by afar as some being/terror tries to send me to a Shining-like state of insanity. Soooo....?

Oh crap he found the chip! :)
Could be anything, really depends on what you have down there, got a water conditioning system? There may be a detector down there you don't know about, could be the furnace, carbon dioxide detector? Hot water heater?

Sounds like an exorcism might be in order.... :priest:

I agree with Chuck, I think you might have another detector hidden somewhere. The beeping does have a mind of it's own. I've gone thru what you're explaining.
I just changed all my batteries last week, usually when one starts they all go around the same time.
meant to say... I had a randomly beeping one once, finally found it under a suspended ceiling tile up in the joists. Probably should move it.

There could be a detector there, though I thought they might beep a bit more regularly. We have a furnace and a hot water heater, not the other things.
I'm upstairs and I can hear it now. AAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

That's where it was! I didn't know it existed -- a white detector right above the white ceiling, which I have been staring at with a flashlight for two days. :wall:
Now, I'd smash it to bits, if I could only find the freaking hammer....

Cool, glad I can help!
I had an appt in the city - I couldn't get to the unit high up in the stairwell. It took forever for the rental company to come change it. All hours of the night, an echoing beep, it drove me nuts.

Dam you Cubfan. My ploy to drive Silvio nuts was working. You foiled my sinister plans.

I had that happen to me after we moved into this house. We had a CO detector packed in a box and stored in the basement. Since we got a new one as a house warming gift, we didn't need the old one. Then, a year after we moved in, I get this random beeping. That sucked.

Ya, I thought it was a CO one too, as we used to have one. That caused me to look in the wrong places. But, we are beep-free now. O:)

Forget the hammer. Throw it as hard as you can upon a cement floor then stomp the living hell out of it.
I have gone thru this before and it does drive one batty. What's worse is, my wife decided to have fun with me and said she couldn't hear anything. GAAA! She was the one who located where it was coming from, but wanted to have fun at my expense. That was 2 yrs ago and I still have not gotten her back yet. Yet.
