View Full Version : roof/gutter issue

When our home was reshingled (before we bought it) the final course of shingles was laid flush w/ the edge of the roof - no overhang. So now, in a few spots, water is coming down btwn the edge of the roof and the gutter and there is some rot on the rafters.

The gutter guy suggested I just trim an inch or two off of the rafters, remount the gutters so there would be a 1-2" overhang and eliminate the problem that way.

As that seems labor intensive I'm wondering if there isn't a product I can secure under that final course of shingles to create a runoff extension of an inch or two to ensure the water is directed to the gutter and eliminate the problem that way. Wondering what to use?

If I understand you correctly, the product you need, and which is standard practice, would be a ' drip edge ', they come in a couple different configurations, and are made of aluminum in most cases. Take a ride to your local home improvement store and ask about them, then look in some of the books in the store, regarding roofing components, and you'll see the breakdown, and exactly where and how the dripedge should be installed.
It's possible to put in on after the fact, just a little putzy.

' drip edge '

Thanks woodchuck! I was sure there was a less intense fix for this.
