Ok...so I found a good sippy cup that doesnt leak (Gerber transition)

All he wants to do is play with it and not try to drink from it, even though I know he is hungry. When I put it in his mouth he just chews on it and doesn't suck from it like he would a bottle

Help!

Is he still 9 months like in your sig? Give it time, some kids take a while. Are you weening from the bottle? I remember son #1 was hard to get away from the Baba! #2 was a piece of cake, he was off the Baba just after 1 year.

Mine is great with a sippy...until this week. He was vomiting Wed night and has had a slight fever and some explosive poops since then. But will he drink anything? No, of course not.

He drinks some, but yesterday I could only get him to drink milk from a bottle. He is dehydrated, but not dangerously so. I just want to keep it from getting worse.

He usually loves water. Not a big juice fan. He wants nothing to do with Pedialite.

Sorry to hear that your kid is sick Muz :(

Don - Alex just turned 9 months and the ped recommended that we start him on the sippy....he gets really pissed off at me when I try to force him on it

Guess I'll just work at it slow

Yeah, I'd just let it be, honest. He'll figure it out sooner or later. I wish I could remember when Tara started with the sippy cup! Maybe at a year though.... just don't remember.

J-

Take it slow at first is really all you can do. We started the sippy at about 9 months and still haven't gotten him to give up the bottle completely.

Is the sippy you got, one that he has to suck in order to get fluid out, or does it just flow when tipped? We've had more luck with the tip and flow type. Also, we removed the flow restrictor piece from the inside of the lid of our Gerber cups. He seems to do better when he can regulate his intake by tipping only. I guess one step was easier to figure out than the two step "tip and suck".

Of course, this means that he WILL create much more of a mess when drinking. A "no cup outside of the kitchen" rule and a package of paper towels from Costco have limited the damage our little guy can do.

Good Luck!

Yeah, your ped should've said something more like "time to start getting him used to the idea of a sippy cup". I think 9 mo is too young for them to actually use it as a bottle-replacement. But playing is great -- it means he is getting comfortable holding it, manipulating it, etc. Eventually he'll get something out of it - neat! - then he'll get it in his mouth a little -fun!- etc, etc.

We haven't introduced a sippy cup yet to our 9 month old, but we do let him play with his spoons all the time. He just chews them and plays with them, but he's watching us, and more and more he puts it in his mouth the correct way, mimicking us. It's fun to watch.

Thanks for the advice guys...I'll probably just not worry about it too much, give it to him every once in a while untill he gets used to it.

I'll go with the 3 day rule.....Anything you introduce will take about 3 days to be integrated into the 'program'.

Whether it's taking away the 'binky', going from a bassinet to a crib, etc. 3 days is all it seems to take to modify behaviors.

Really. Try it. First day might be hell. Second day - not so bad. Third day - eh! By day four - OH YeaH BabY! :D

Let me know how it works out....I did it with my kid so I'm not just making it up.... :D

Ok...I'll try that Jeff

Wow getting really good feedback here...I need to put "Help" at the bottom of my posts more often

Paed said it was bad for his teeth...

That's why baby teeth fall out.

Julian just turned six months and already loves to drink water out of his sippy cup. He really loves to drink out of a "Big Peoples" glass. He would get all excited whenever I would get a glass of water for myself. So I gave him a sippy cup. I started by taking out the plug that makes him have to suck hard so he knew that there was something in it for him. Then I put the stopper back in. It took him a couple of tries but he finally figured it out. Now he gets his sippy cup every time I get a glass of water. Most of it just runs down his chin, but at least he knows how to use it.
