Hey guys -
I'm pretty sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find it after a quick search.

I'm looking for an online place to store all the pictures from our computer. It's been slowing down tremendously, so I'm just looking to do a clean sweep and reboot back to factory setting.

Do you guys know a good place to store them? Ideally I'd like to do a mass download/upload/whatever, as opposed to individually...is that even possible? If so, that leaves something like photobucket out.

Thanks for any help that you can provide!!

Don, My father inlaw loves Carbenite. However, if you just want pics, we love Kodak Gallery

I have read Mozy is a decent service.

Why not put them on an external drive?

I had a bad experience with an online storage service last year, shitty service, buggy software.

I had thought of an external drive...the only thing is that I don't currently have one.

I'll have to price them out, as I have no idea what they run. But thanks for re-affirming that it is a possible (and maybe better?) way to go.

You can find an external usb for less than $100 at a local store like best buy, they always have some on sale.

How long do you need the pics stored? If you just want somewhere to put them while you reload your computer let me know. I could set aside some webspace for you temporarily.

Thanks for the offer, ArchersDad!

I'm looking for a semi-permanent place though. Someplace to store pictures and my music so it doesn't bog down the computer and in case something happens so I don't lose it all.

Even just adding an internal hdd for a while would work. I've got a 200gb and a 300gb internals. Now if something happened to the whole computer I'd be screwed but...

Don, you must, must, must pick up an external hard drive as your first line of defense. You can get a 120GB USB drive for less than $50, that's probably more than enough space for your pics and music. Ideally, get a drive at least as big as the one in your PC and clone your whole boot drive onto it.

For offsite backup, Mozy.com will give you 2GB online storage free. If you need more than that, it's $5 a month for unlimited storage. Be aware, though, that it takes a long time to get your data up there. If it's just photos and MP3s, zip your libraries up before you send them.

External is the way to go. Heck...pick up two for fun. They are cheap. Just don't by a couple of pints at the pub this week and you've got yourself 100 plus GIG. What else do you need? I think I may get another one today. They are so worth it.

Not to bump my own thread....but yesterday we were poking around Target and I saw a memory stick on an endcap display...that reminded me that I needed something to store all our crap on so I can reboot the computer.

So I found a 320gig external HD for $99. It's a Western Digital "My Book" (I've never heard of it). Supposedly it's just plug and play, I'm installing the software now.

My goal is to put all our pictures and my music on there before the wife gets home tomorrow night from her weekend away. Then I'll feel like I accomplished something (see my post about wanting to do something productive while she's gone).

Wish me luck....

That's a good deal, I read a lot that those WD drives kind of suck, hopefully you have a good experience with it.

SWeet! looking forward to a shitty HD! :icon_lol:

I totally forgot about needing it, and figured I would kill 2 birds with one stone and get it while I was there. Serves me right for buying without researching it! But I figured, hey, it's $99, same price as the others there....how bad can it be, right? :eusa_whistle::icon_rolleyes:

From my recent external HD failure: My local guy tells me that they slap in the cheapest possible hard drive, controller card, and cheap case. Normally, the warranty is very short and only covers replacement of the drive.

Maybe if you grabbed a second one and backed-up your back-up? :icon_wink:

Backing-up is an excellent idea anyway you cut it. :wtg:

Just make sure you understand that an external hard drive may not be 'bullet-proof'. Especially, a cheap one.

But thats the only one I can afford! :icon_rolleyes:

Once I see how much space all my stuff takes up, I'll buy another appropriately sized one ASAP.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I really do appreciate it!

Don was that at Target? Cool deal. I like the idea of a back of the back up. of course what I want is Apple's time capsule.

Save them to DVD's also then mail them to some family for safe keeping. My PC died around xmas last year and the only back ups I had were a smattering of pics at kodak gallery and what people could send me that I had sent them. I only got half of the pictures back from kodak gallery (most of the ones they sent me were corrupted and would not download from the discs).

I remember this conversation from another thread. I think it is very, very important to properly back up your files. I think I will start a walkathon to raise awareness of the issue. Maybe call it the "back that ass up-a-thon" and raise money to buy external HD's.

I just got a 1TB internal harddrive from $199, and put it in a $50 external enclosure.

I always back up my back up and throw it into our little fire-proof safe.
