OK, not a recipe per se but I just wanted to know if anyone else has done this with their ADHD (or otherwise behaviorally-challenging) kids?

My wife has been skeptical about whether or not it will help but she's been a trooper. She's made some great recipes but has been having trouble with the whole bread thing. The first two attempts came out in brick form, so we've been buying stuff in the frozen part of the organic section in our local market and it hasn't been much better.

So today I packed up the boys and drove 45 minutes (one way) to the tiny town of McDonald, PA where there is a gluten-free bakery. While I was there I picked up a loaf of GF white bread (which wasn't half-bad, although a bit on the crumbly side) and a GF cook book targeted toward kids. Inside was a recipe for the same type of bread that has the option of using a bread machine. I can't wait to pull our long-unused bread machine and give it a go. I used to love the smell of baking bread from that thing!

Yes it works. My neighbour in my back yard (wife is Canadian!!!) is G-free, but not for those reasons. A former member of this site, who lives a few minutes away from me has an autistic child (as does my SIL) and they both do the G-free diet and only buy foods from whole paycheck and such and it has helped their kids. It's pricey though!

Definitely give it a try. They swear by it and I am pretty sure it is documented in health journals that it is beneficial to these kids. If it can help him, why not give it a try?

--->It isn't documented to work better than a placebo in any reputable journal (for ADHD, autism, etc.), but if you can afford the extra expense why not give it a try? You could have a success story like Hockeyfan's neighbors, and at the least get a better handle on what exactly is going into your kids.

I highly recommend this (http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/autism.html) for a record of autism and the voodoo people try to claim is true. (It's a bit of a bear to digest, so a search on that page for gluten will direct you more directly.)

I'm on a trip to PA/DC/PA for the next week, so won't be able to respond, but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

Kwak,

FYI I found out through my neighbor who has a son who must be on a gluten free diet that Carrabas now has a gluten free section on their menu. Don't know if there is one by you but if you are on the road or just need a break from cooking at home it might be e help to you. I have never been to a Carrabas myself and am sure it is not like being in little Italy but a SAHD has to do what a SAHD has to do. Good luck.
