Glad to find this site. I'm a new stay at home dad -- my little girl is 3 months old. Like many of the posts I've read -- I simply can't make as much money as my wife; she's a Nuclear Medicine Technologist at the local hospital.... My parents always said, "It doesn't matter what you get your degree in." Well, times have changed -- an English degree doesn't carry a whole-lotta weight these days. No matter; I consider myself lucky to be able to raise my little one.
I did take a night/weekend job working at The Home Depot. To be totally honest, I just took the job so that I could get out of the house and have my own life. Taking that job has turned out to be a great move -- would recommend a part-time job to anyone who has the time. Having a life outside of the house is important, even necessary, for sanity. :D
I was an only child and have never been around kids in my life, until now. My youngin' is the first baby I've ever actually held! Needless to say, I am learning a lot. Like all new parents, I haven't a clue what I'm doing. My youngin' has me doin' stuff that I never imagined -- I actually have rips on either side of my mouth from smiling so much. LOL
Anyway, glad to find a place with guys who are in similar situations as myself. I plan on coming back often to check out (and possibly share) the various opinions on what in the world I'm supposed to be doing. Heh.

Welcome to the site Goat beard!
Are you a fan of Adam Sandler? Wasn't he the one that did goatboy? Sorry... its just me
Welcome aboard man, glad you found us! Come back and share, vent etc.
Dang, I wonder if hd is hiring by us, I've got some jobs to do this summer and could use an employee discount. Be honest now, thats what its really about.

Welcome Mr. Goat Beard :)
I don't believe home depot gives their employees much of a break?

Welcome goatbeard. Do you really have one? :o
Sorry Tony the HD doesent give discounts but they used to give good stock options and even better ones when you are a manager. I almost transfered to that new Depot a couple years back but the wife said it was way too cold there. They spent a ton of money on that place because of all the rock that had to be blasted. Course Duluth it self is on one big rock slab. They put that store on the hill for a reason so it could bee seen believe it or not. We love the town in July and August :)

Sorry guys, The Home Depot gives NO employee discount -- zilch, zero, nada. From time to time you will get stuff really cheap, but it's a 'right time right place' sorta thing. They claim that we make enough money not to need a discount.
That said, we do get stock options. We can buy Home Depot stock for 15% under cost. You put money in an account straight from your check and they buy stock with that money 2 times per year -- so you can't just buy it whenever you want to. After they have bought the stock, you can turn around and sell it the next day for an instant 15% profit (minus whatever the company charges you to sell it :???: ).
It's a really cool "guy" job and I bet that right now most stores are actually hiring for Spring and Summer help. I usually work from 5 - 11 a couple'a times a week then work both Saturday and Sunday. I never much liked working weekends, but it's not college football season, yet, so the weekends don't bother me at all -- at least for now.
It's a great part-time job, but more importantly it gets you out of the house and gives you a 'real life' with 'real people' to converse with. I sat here for a while and started getting on my own nerves; that can't be healthy.

Yeh man that stock was berry berry good to me! Thats HD best perk. I was a manager in the hardware dept and tool corral. I have every tool known to man now says my wife.

That's cool! I work in paint -- they just gave our manager the option to transfer stores or lose his job. They are trying to get me to manage the department but I just don't have the time. I don't think department managers make much more than I do at this point. It would be like taking $8 an hour out of my pay to hire someone else to watch (and raise) my youngin'. It's just not worth it.

Yeh I always thought paint was crazy to keep straight. All the oops paint would have drivin me crazy. You are wise not to take the Mgr position as you become a wipping post if you kmow what I mean

Welcome goat. I've been tempted to apply at the HD by my house a few times, just for extra money, might look into that a little more seriously now.
Yeah, there was huge opposition to the hd going in up there "evironmental impact" and all. I swear, there are soooo many people here bitching about how crappy the local economy is as they rally forth to protest another company coming in.
I think the site across the street from it on that hill would be perfect for a Lowes
Maybe Menuards has an employee discount, I think they're hiring! ;) The folks at the paint dept here look like they're a little too familiar with ...
aaaaah never mind, I was going to try for some lame fumes joke. Its raining here, kind of takes the air out of the sails.
