View Full Version : Securing my wireless network

We've been going wireless for some time over here. It was unsecured for a while, then we were having some problems with the router, called Linksys in India and they walked me thru how to secure it and it was good for a while. A couple weeks go by and I was having problems with the internet so I hit the little reset button on the back of the router and now I'm back to the unsecured one again.
If I go into 'view wireless networks' then 'change the order', I can see the secured one we created just I can't "activate" it (for lack of a better term). I really wished I hadn't pressed that reset button and I'd really like to secure it again. Can anyone walk me thru it???
thanks

pffft! Thanks, but uh, it doesn't help. I'm sure it should, but I'm computer retarded. the first thing I tried doing was going to Linksys setup page and it prompts me for a user name and password. Uh, what username and password???

If you reset it back to defaults (sounds like you did) then the username is something like admin or administrator. Usually no password. Then follow jim's advice.
The other option is go to the hardware store and get a chain and padlock. Wrap the chain around the antenna...

I was thinking about that, the last time they charged me $30 for the call because the router was out of warranty. Not sure what they would do this time. I would hope they wouldn't charge me anything since it's probably just a matter of clicking a few things and/or typing a few things. Like I said, we already set it up last time, I just can't reappoint it. I'll have to try later.

So, you can still see the secure network? When you try to connect does your computer ask for a key? I also use Linksys and when I reset it the settings neve change.

Yeah I can see it in a list of all the networks we've ever used (panera bread, hotels, etc), but it's got a little red x thru it like it's inaccessible.
No, it does not ask for a key.

What model and version # is it? (version# is usually found on the bottom) and what system are you running? XP, Vista, Linux?
For most of them, you just access the router by typing 192.168.1.1 in the browser URL space. For username and password, leave user blank, and insert admin for password.
Then it's a matter of establishing a WPK (wireless pass key), if you remember the one you had used before that will work, otherwise create a new one. When you restart your computer, open up the Linksys network manager and insert the same password.
Hope it helps, if you need more help let me know,
Scott

Nice!
This guy is more helpful in his first post than most of us have been in our first 5,000 (or less)!
Welcome to the site, Scott! Cubfan owes you a homebrew if it works!

hey Cub, your a little confused, first off once you hit that little button you completlly reset the router, this means, new user name and password, all previous setting are history! You have nothing to revert to, you must start all over again, your best bet is to go to linsys.com and download the user manual, they have them all there in PDF, than read the simple instructions and your on your way.
your not the first one to do what you did, check out the help boards at linksys and youll see

I think you are right chuck.
well I found the manual online, which in itself was asking too much of me. I can tell you right now I dont have the patience or the computer-lingo-knowledge to see this thru. Time to call China, or was it India?

You have to click a button and then write down the WEP or whatever encryption key your using. Then enter that in your laptop or 360 or whatever. I think that other guy was right. Most have a url you enter and then your can do your changes.
The name of my router is "my router is better than your router". :icon_razz:
When you search you get about 8 or so coming up, so I figured I'd have a laugh. My new neighbour is a techy guy though. I really think he could hack it if he wanted. LOL.

Do you still have the install disc that came with the router?
If so, just go Control Panel->Add/remove Software->find Linksys Network Manager->Remove. Restart your computer and make sure that it's gone, and just reinstall it. It should be as blank as your router. You can then proceed to re-establish your security settings.
Scott
Edit: if you don't have the install disc, just google the model and version # of your router and you can usually download it.
Edit 2: @Hockeyfan: WEP is very easily cracked, usually in under 5 minutes just by running a few programs that can be downloaded. WPA is a much better bet.

I have WPA on mine. For Cubfan I would expect his router to be screwed down to his computer table. Then he'd likely think it were secure.

Yes I just found the disc. I'll try later tonight when the wife is out. Thanks. I'm in way over my head!

Now that's whitty. I used to call mine something to do with hockey and the Canes or something, but I wanted something funny (at least to me). You know everyone and their uncle will see it. Everytime they go by with their iPhone or turn on a laptop. Free Porn. Now that's good. What does Chubfan call his? Cubs choke? I'd call it something like. Bartman's ghost or something with his name. LOL. That would be funny.

Linksys had a set up assistant on their site at one time that would walk you through it kind of like the install disk. I used it once before.

Dude, I can set that up for you. Just give me a call and we'll set up a time. That is unless you have already called India.
