They make this new-fangled Dry-Erase wallpaper these days. (Those crazy kids! What'll they think of next?)
I got some from my BIL. Took an old piece of sheetrock and pasted it to it the other day. Going to put a border around it tomorrow (so the kid'll know when to stop and not color the wall) and hang it in her room.
Awesome stuff! Kid is delighted at the prospect of the new activity center. Picked-up some new Dry-Erase markers and Eraser and we're going to town!

Yeah that stuff looks neat. I also saw that they have paneling that is a chalkboard or dry erase board on one side. I may use some of that when I redo my kids rooms.

Last week I painted a 3' x 4' section of wall with chalkboard paint. I did not need to prime, but I did put three coats on. When it dried, I glued some 1/2" oak border around it with the edges mitered, and man does it look good. It took about 30 minutes of actual work and 8 hour dry time.
$15 a quart for the paint and 31 cents a foot for the oak, and we are in business. My daughter loves it!

FYI, Rust-Oleum just came out with a pint-sized can of glow-in-the-dark paint. They say, for best results, paint it over something that is white or light-colored. That should be an interesting paint for the kiddos.

Last week on Extreme Makeover - Home Edition they did this really cool fiber-optic installation in a baby boy's room.
They drill a gazillion holes in the ceiling, snake fiber-optic cable through all the holes, trim the cables at the ceiling, and then they make the cables light-up like twinkling stars.
The really cool thing was some of the cables are sequenced together to render a shooting star effect with a starburst at the end.
Probably costs a gazillion bucks too, but pretty cool. Ain't going to happen around here anytime soon. But cool. If you have the means, I suggest you check it out.

I just checked into the fiber optics on the Extreme Makeover Home Edition-Luke's "Stars and Moon" room. For just a couple of hundred dollars you could get the same effect. The ceiling work would be time consuming, but the end results would be really fun!
