Help!
XP Home Edition has been working fine for me the last 3 years.
At a minimum, I have to go up to XP Pro to run AutoDesk Inventor - (3D modeling and rendering software) needs 1GB mem, ATI "Fire" or NVidia "Quadro" series graphics cards. Oodles of hard drive space. Oh, and a nice monitor would be obvious.
So not interested in XP media. Anyone with XP Pro, or Pro64 advice?
Any help on a dual processor - Xeon config also would be useful!

At this point, I still say Windows 2000 Professional is better than any OS out there...

The OS depends on what you wantto do.
XP home is great for home users that don't need a loto of techy stuff like remopte admin.
XP Pro is great for the use of remote administration. I do some IT consultning and having the remote control ablility helps lets me work from home.
XP media is for doing vidoe, pictures and burning DVDs, playing MP3, etc. Can only get from Manufactures that sell the Media PC.

Please elaborate on exactly WHY windows 2000 is better than ANY OS out there...I gotta hear this :)

I'm interested in this, too. I have a Mac desktop setup running OS X, but am looking to get a Windows laptop to network in from other parts of the house and to run some specific software applications that don't have Mac support.

I've been using XP pro for several years now and have no complaints. It is very stable and works very well. I use it for video/audio/picture editing, ASP.NET programming, database programming with SQL Server, etc. It takes all that I dish out and never complains...

I see another windows sucks, no *nix sucks debate. Oh yeah, the MAC users need to throw in their opinion. I thought I would not hear this debate again once I left IT. Although, it is quite fun getting the nerds pants in a bunch, also quite easy.

I just updated my PC and OS. I am running SolidWorks on a HP Workstation running XP Pro. I had XP-64 initial installed but I had problems with driver support so I witched to XP Pro. I'm not sure about Inventor, but SoildWorks runs much happier under Windows XP Pro than Win2K.
For the Photography side of my business, I use Mac's but I'll leave that for another thread...

I had my system's configuration pretty much dictated by the requirements for Inventor. XP Pro required and the mid-range (industrial strength) nVidia card.
I was originally trying to see if anybody knew if XP 64 was worth it, but it seems the rest of the world doesn't need or support it anyway....so forget about that.
Overall, XP Pro has been very stable. Any lock-ups are easily killed in the task manager and I've only had to re-boot once in a year. Networking is solid and reliable.
Thanks for the feedback gentlemen!

Heck I'm running my whole server off a souped up Sinclair ZX81 (http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/sinclair/computers/zx81/zx81.htm).

Most excellent. My best friend in highschool got one for christmass our freshman year! The next year my parnets bought me a C64 with a cassette tape drive! Both were great "computers"
