Default Major League Baseball 2014

Let me start by saying the Mark B was right: AJ Burnett is an @$$ clown. All this talk of playing for the Pirates this year or retiring was utter BS. For four months he weighed coming back for one more year or retiring to be with his family and the Pirates heard nothing. Now we hear that he's shopping the open market and that the "qualifying offer" is $14.1 million for 1 year and he could get as much as $30 for 2 years. Reputedly the Orioles (Burnett lives in Maryland) are a front runner.

So far, the Pirates ownership (who are more than comfortable at having egg on their faces) are holding firm that they will not extend such an offer and will once again be laughingstocks by running a team with a payroll of $70M with little to no action in the off season to fill gaps in right field and first base.

LOL - they even let their mascot go - namely the logo with the face of the grumpy buccaneer, NOT the Parrot who shoots hot dogs out of an air cannon at home games. For the first time in team history the "official" logo will be the "P." Any wager what that initial will "unofficially" stand for?

For all of you new guys out there this is a fine example on how to start a thread.

I can't, and don't even want to think about baseball right now.

The word all along is that it would be either the Pirates or Orioles. When push came to shove, I'm sure that his wife would happily send him on the road for nine months to earn another 15 mil.

In other mascot news, the Cubs got their first ever. His name is Clark.

Gee, I wonder how your team pulled that off. I was certain that he'd go to the Royals or Marlins.

BTW Kwak, a gent named Ralph Kiner died last week. Former Bucco Hall of Famer. RIP Ralphie! Great Mets broadcaster too. Kiner's Korner was one of the longest running TV sports shows of all time.

Yeah, I heard about that. I moved to Pittsburgh long after he retired though.

AJ signs with the evil Phils. Too bad, they still won't make the playoffs.

The Philly fans are a rough crowd. It could get ugly there very fast. Have fun pitching in that band box AH.....I mean AJ.

LOL, yeah.

In this situation nobody wins but AJ though. He's going to be hating life halfway through the season if he pulls his same old act that he did in NY and during the postseason here in Pittsburgh.

The rest of the Phillies seem to be getting long in the tooth too - even the new acquisitions like Marion Byrd. I guess with a $2.5B local TV deal with Comcast they have the money to burn. Yet another reason why "small" markets like Pittsburgh can no longer compete - though we have no idea how big the deal that the Pirates signed with Root Sports.

Meanwhile, the Pirates once again have dropped the ball. Had they tendered the $14M offer to Burnett and he refused it they'd have at least gotten a draft choice out of the deal - but they didn't. In fact, ownership hasn't made many moves this off-season and are going to have among the lowest payroll in MLB yet again.

I'm wondering how they're going to do this season with no upgrades and actually some lost talent - even if they turned out to be rent-a-players.
