Default Teen Who Killed Four People Got Off On Probation Because He's Rich

Infuriating
A 16-year-old boy who drunkenly killed four people got probation this week because the judge with no apparent irony agreed with the boy's defense that he was a victim of "affluenza," whose parents taught him wealth and privilege shield consequences. The teen had faced up to twenty years in prison.

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Couch admitted to four counts of manslaughter after he and seven other boys stole alcohol from Walmart, piled into his car and struck and killed four pedestrians while going 70 miles per hour in a 40 zone. One of his passengers remains in the hospital with severe brain damage, and nine other bystanders were also injured.

This:

Also, I love the incredible logic which says "He acted this way because he's never been made to face consequences in his entire life, so we shouldn't make him face consequences right now." Now that's what I call rehabilitation.

What will be, will be. The older I get, I seem to see more injustice than justice in the court.

And here's the other side. Today in our little town a 16 yr. old got sentenced to 75 years, 10 suspended, in prison for rape of an 11yr. old. He was physically abused by his mother, who's now deceased. Who knows where a father was. He had no consequences either.

Instead of getting frustrated with the system, I think I'll just try to remember how important parenting is, when kids are little, as well as when they're getting older. I see parents checking out once they're in middle school or before, figuring they're old enough to do it all themselves by then. The kids believe they have it all figured out. But they don't.

It's hard not to get frustrated but I think, ultimately, this is what we should take away from this story.

I want to get frustrated with the system and remember that, why can't I do both?
Dead on about middle school though...

Good point, do both.

There was a case (story)here where a judge sentenced a teacher who'd had sex (statutory rape) with a 14yr. old student of his to a couple years probation or something. Then he failed at the probation, and judge sentenced him to 30 days in jail after saying the teen was older than her chronological age, and in as much control of the situation as the teacher. The frustration with that, outcries, and protests are getting the judge into some deep $&%#. I doubt he'll have a job that long.

So the frustration can have an effect. We've had other judges thrown out here for being dumbasses.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the girl in that previous case had committed suicide long before the judge's comments.
