Default "Inner tie rod has play - replace immediately". True?

We got new tires put on my wife's car this morning and when they were done the guy cautioned me that the inner tie rods have play and that they need immediate replacement.

He said once we have it done to bring the car back and they're realign the tires.

Since it wasn't something they offered to do, I'm guessing the guy isn't BSing me. How much truth is in it that it's something that needs to be done immediately.

With dropping $450 when our oven shit the bed (now the microwave and breadmaker are on the fritz less than a week later), and the $850 for the tires, we're not too excited at the prospect of spending more money this quickly.

Is this something that can hold off for say a month or so or should it really get immediate attention?

Tanks.

I wouldn't mess around with tie rods. I believe that if one snaps you will lose steering.
Maybe someone else has a better understanding.

That's my understanding as well. And once they start to get some play, they can deteriorate to dangerous levels quickly. I'm not an expert, but that's my understanding.

Shenanigans.

Play in steering does not mean immediate death. What kind of car is this before I tell you how to fix it your jolly self. It's an incredibly easy repair in many cases...

I step aside and humbly acknowledge a superior mechanical mind.

You's been had!!!

That's a rack and pinion vehicle. There are NO inner tie rod ends. Are you positive that it is not the outer tie rod ends? There is a massive difference...

Might as well get a new Johnson Rod while you are at it!

it is in the hand written note: "Both front inner tie rods have play".

If it makes any difference, the handwriting is slightly better than my 5 year olds.
